Ordered mesoporous carbon CMK-5 was comprehensively tested for the first time as electrode materials in lithium ion battery. The surface morphology, pore structure and crystal structure were investigated by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM), N-2 adsorption technique and X-ray diffraction (XRD) respectively. Electrochemical properties of CMK-5 were studied by galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry, and compared with conventional anode material graphite. Results showed that the reversible capacity of CMK-5 was 525 mAh/g at the third charge-discharge cycle and that CMK-5 was more compatible for quick charge-discharge cycling because of its special mesoporous structure. Of special interest was that the CMK-5 gave no peak on its positive sweep of the cyclic voltammetry, which was different from all the other known anode materials. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and XRD were also applied to investigate the charge-discharge characteristics of CMK-5.

The turbostratic mesoporous carbon blacks were prepared by catalytic chemical vapour decomposition (CCVD) of acetylene using Ni/MgO catalysts prepared by co-precipitation. The relationship between deposition conditions and the nanostructures of resultant carbon black materials was investigated. It was found that the turbostratic and textural structures of carbon blacks are dependent on the deposition temperature and nickel catalyst loading. Higher deposition temperature increases the carbon crystallite unit volume V-nano and reduces the surface area of carbon samples. Moreover, a smaller V-nano is produced by a higher Ni loading at the same deposition temperature. In addition of the pore structure and the active metal surface area of the catalyst, the graphitic degree or electronic conductivity of the carbon support is also a key issue to the activity of the supported catalyst. V-nano is a very useful parameter to describe the effect of the crystalline structure of carbon blacks on the reactivity of carbon blacks in oxygen-carbon reaction and the catalytic activity of carbon-supported catalyst in ammonia decomposition semi-quantitatively. The comparative analysis of the most widely used methods of mesoporosity characterization of two activated carbon fibers is presented. Not only the older methods are used, i.e. Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH), Dubinin (the so-called first variant-D-1ST and the so-called second variant-D-2ND), Dollimore and Heal (DH), and Pierce (P) but the recently developed ones, i.e. the method of Nguyen and Do (ND) and that developed by Do (Do) are also applied. Additionally, the method of the characterization of fractality is put to use (fractal analog of FHH isotherm). The results are compared and discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. ZrO2-Al2O3 composite oxides and supported Ni catalysts were prepared, and characterized by N-2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition was also investigated. This mesoporous composite oxide is shown to be a promising catalyst support. An increase in the catalytic activity and stability of methane and carbon dioxide reforming reaction was resulted from the zirconia addition, especially at 5wt% ZrO2 content. The Ni catalyst supported ZrO2-Al2O3 has a strong resistance to sintering and the carbon deposition in a relatively long-term reaction.

Zr-Laponite pillared clays were prepared and used as supports of nickel catalysts for the methane reforming reaction with carbon dioxide to synthesis gas. The structural and textural characteristics of supports and catalysts were systematically examined by N-2 adsorption/desorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition were investigated. It is found that Zr-Laponite pillared clays are promising catalyst supports for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The pore structure and surface properties of such supports greatly affect the catalytic behaviors of catalysts derived. Carbon deposition on catalysts was also affected by the property and structure of supports. The sintering of nickel metal and zirconia was another factor responsible for catalyst deactivation. This new-type nickel supported catalyst Ni/Zr-Laponite(8), with well-developed porosity, gave a higher initial conversion and a relatively long-term stability, and is therefore a promising catalyst for potential application to carbon dioxide reforming of methane to synthesis gas. In this paper, we present a technique for equilibria characterization of activated carbon having slit-shaped pores. This method was first developed by Do (Do, D. D. A new method for the characterisation of micro-mesoporous materials. Presented at the International Symposium on New Trends in Colloid and Interface Science, September 24-26, 1998 Chiba, Japan) and applied by his group and other groups for characterization of pore size distribution (PSD) as well as adsorption equilibria determination of a wide range of hydrocarbons. It is refined in this paper and compared with the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMG) simulation and density functional theory (DFT). The refined theory results in a good agreement between the pore filling pressure versus pore width and those obtained by GCMG and DFT. Furthermore, our local isotherms are qualitatively in good agreement with those obtained by the GCMC simulations. The main advantage of this method is that it is about 4 orders of magnitude faster than the GCMC simulations, making it suitable for optimization studies and design purposes. Finally, we apply our method and the GCMG in the derivation of the PSD of a commercial activated carbon. It was found that the PSD derived from our method is comparable to that derived from the GCMG simulations.

Mesoporous Ni(OH)(2) is synthesized using sodium dodecyl sulfate as a template and urea as a hydrolysis-controlling agent. Mesoporous NiO with a centralized pore-size distribution is obtained by calcining Ni(OH)(2) at different temperatures. The BET specific surface area reaches 477.7 m(2) g(-1) for NiO calcined at 250 degreesC. Structure characterizations indicate a good mesoporous structure for the nickel oxide samples. Cyclic voltammetry shows the NiO to have good capacitive behaviour due to its unique mesoporous structure when using a large amount of NiO to fabricate the electrode. Compared with NiO prepared by dip-coating and cathodic precipitation methods, mesoporous NiO with a controlled pore structure can be used in much larger amounts to fabricate electrodes and still maintain a high specific capacitance and good capacitive behaviour. We investigate here the diffusion of n-decane in nanoporous MCM-41 silicas with pore diameters between 3.0 and 4.3 nm, and at various temperatures and purge flow rates, by the Zero Length Column method. A complete-time-range analysis of desorption curves is used to derive the diffusion coefficient, and the effect of pore size, purge flow rate and temperature on the diffusion character is systematically studied. The results show that the calculated low-coverage diffusivity values are strongly dependent on temperature but only weakly dependent on pore size. The study reveals that transport is controlled by intracrystalline diffusion and dominated by sorbate-sorbent interaction, with the experimental isosteric heat matching the potential energy of flat-lying n-decane molecules on the surface, determined using a united atom model. The diffusion activation energy and adsorption isosteric heat at zero loading for the different pore size MCM-41 samples vary in a narrow range respectively, and their ratio is essentially constant over the pore size range studied. The study shows that the ZLC method is an effective tool to investigate the diffusion kinetics of hydrocarbons in mesoporous MCM-41 materials. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Mesoporous NiO with centralized pore size distribution was obtained by calcining Ni(OH)(2) at different temperatures. The BET specific surface area reaches 477.7 m(2).g(-1) for NiO calcined at 523 K. Various mesoporous catalysts with vanadium loadings between 0.5 and 6 V wt.% and surface areas around 1300 m(2)/g were synthesized using the isomorphous substitution (IS) and molecular designed dispersion (MDD) techniques. Their catalytic properties were tested using toluene as a model VOC in a fixed bed reactor at temperatures between 300 and 550 degrees C. It was found that during the oxidation of toluene, over V-HMS synthesized via IS, conversion of toluene mainly results in carbon oxides, benzene, benzaldehyde and water. Total conversion is greatly improved when the vanadium content is increased from around 1.5 to 3.0 wt.%, but an increase in the textural porosity (V-TEX/V-MESO) from 0.3 to 0.6 had no discernable effect on the conversion. This can be explained by the fact that a V-TEX/V-MESO as low as 0.3 is sufficient to facilitate the access of toluene into the framework confined mesopores without any molecular transport limitations. However, when using V-HMS synthesized by MDD, conversion of toluene is greatly improved when the V-TEX/ V-MESO ratio is increased from 0.1 to 0.6. This is because the diffusion limitations are minimized by this increase. V-HMS synthesized via MDD does not exhibit selectivity to benzaldehyde, favoring total oxidation to CO and CO2. This different oxidation mechanism can be explained in terms of location, accessibility and number of active species on the surface of the HMS support. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
