We present a new method of laser frequency locking in which the feedback signal is directly proportional to the detuning from an atomic transition, even at detunings many times the natural linewidth of the transition. Our method is a form of sub-Doppler polarization spectroscopy, based on measuring two Stokes parameters (I-2 and I-3) of light transmitted through a vapor cell. It extends the linear capture range of the lock loop by as much as an order of magnitude and provides frequency discrimination equivalent to or better than those of other commonly used locking techniques. The appropriate use of wastes is a significant issue for the pig industry due to increasing pressure from regulatory authorities to protect the environment from pollution. Nitrogen contained in piggery pond sludge ( PPS) is a potential source of supplementary nutrient for crop production. Nitrogen contribution following the application of PPS to soil was obtained from 2 field experiments on the Darling Downs in southern Queensland on contrasting soil types, a cracking clay ( Vertosol) and a hardsetting sandy loam (Sodosol), and related to potentially mineralisable N from laboratory incubations conducted under controlled conditions and NO3- accumulation in the field. Piggery pond sludge was applied as-collected ( wet PPS) and following stockpiling to dry ( stockpiled PPS). Soil NO3- levels increased with increased application rates of wet and stockpiled PPS. Supplementary N supply from PPS estimated by fertiliser equivalence was generally unsatisfactory due to poor precision with this method, and also due to a high level of NO3- in the clay soil before the first assay crop. Also low recoveries of N by subsequent sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor) and wheat ( Triticum aestivum) assay crops at the 2 sites due to low in-crop rainfall in 1999 resulted in low apparent N availability. Over all, 29% ( range 12 - 47%) of total N from the wet PPS and 19% ( range 0 - 50%) from the stockpiled PPS were estimated to be plant-available N during the assay period. The high concentration of NO3- for the wet PPS application on sandy soil after the first assay crop ( 1998 barley, Hordeum vulgare) suggests that leaching of NO3- could be of concern when high rates of wet PPS are applied before infrequent periods of high precipitation, due primarily to the mineral N contained in wet PPS. Low yields, grain protein concentrations, and crop N uptake of the sorghum crop following the barley crop grown on the clay soil demonstrated a low residual value of N applied in PPS. NO3- in the sandy soil before sowing accounted for 79% of the variation in plant N uptake and was a better index than anaerobically mineralisable N ( 19% of variation explained). In clay soil, better prediction of crop N uptake was obtained when both anaerobically mineralisable N (39% of variation explained) and soil pro. le NO3- were used in combination (R-2 = 0.49).

Water-sampler equilibrium partitioning coefficients and aqueous boundary layer mass transfer coefficients for atrazine, diuron, hexazionone and fluometuron onto C18 and SDB-RPS Empore disk-based aquatic passive samplers have been determined experimentally under a laminar flow regime (Re = 5400). The method involved accelerating the time to equilibrium of the samplers by exposing them to three water concentrations, decreasing stepwise to 50% and then 25% of the original concentration. Assuming first-order Fickian kinetics across a rate-limiting aqueous boundary layer, both parameters are determined computationally by unconstrained nonlinear optimization. In addition, a method of estimation of mass transfer coefficients-therefore sampling rates-using the dimensionless Sherwood correlation developed for laminar flow over a flat plate is applied. For each of the herbicides, this correlation is validated to within 40% of the experimental data. The study demonstrates that for trace concentrations (sub 0.1 mu g/L) and these flow conditions, a naked Empore disk performs well as an integrative sampler over short deployments (up to 7 days) for the range of polar herbicides investigated. The SDB-RPS disk allows a longer integrative period than the C18 disk due to its higher sorbent mass and/or its more polar sorbent chemistry. This work also suggests that for certain passive sampler designs, empirical estimation of sampling rates may be possible using correlations that have been available in the chemical engineering literature for some time.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the Australian experience to date with a national 'roll out' of routine outcome measurement in public sector mental health services. METHODS: Consultations were held with 123 stakeholders representing a range of roles. RESULTS: Australia has made an impressive start to nationally implementing routine outcome measurement in mental health services, although it still has a long way to go. All States/Territories have established data collection systems, although some are more streamlined than others. Significant numbers of clinicians and managers have been trained in the use of routine outcome measures, and thought is now being given to ongoing training strategies. Outcome measurement is now occurring 'on the ground'; all States/Territories will be reporting data for 2003-04, and a number have been doing so for several years. Having said this, there is considerable variability regarding data coverage, completeness and compliance. Some States/Territories have gone to considerable lengths to 'embed' outcome measurement in day-to-day practice. To date, reporting of outcome data has largely been limited to reports profiling individual consumers and/or aggregate reports that focus on compliance and data quality issues, although a few States/Territories have begun to turn their attention to producing aggregate reports of consumers by clinician, team or service. CONCLUSION: Routine outcome measurement is possible if it is supported by a co-ordinated, strategic approach and strong leadership, and there is commitment from clinicians and managers. The Australian experience can provide lessons for other countries.

Conventional bioimpedance spectrometers measure resistance and reactance over a range of frequencies and, by application of a mathematical model for an equivalent circuit (the Cole model), estimate resistance at zero and infinite frequencies. Fitting of the experimental data to the model is accomplished by iterative, nonlinear curve fitting. An alternative fitting method is described that uses only the magnitude of the measured impedances at four selected frequencies. The two methods showed excellent agreement when compared using data obtained both from measurements of equivalent circuits and of humans. These results suggest that operational equivalence to a technically complex, frequency-scanning, phase-sensitive BIS analyser could be achieved from a simple four-frequency, impedance-only analyser.

We describe a scheme for measurement of the mean photon flux at an arbitrary optical sideband frequency using homodyne detection. Experimental implementation of the technique requires an acousto-optic modulator in addition to the homodyne detector, and does not require phase locking. The technique exhibits polarization and frequency and spatial mode selectivity, as well as much improved speed, resolution, and dynamic range when compared to linear photodetectors and avalanche photodiodes, with potential application to quantum-state tomography and information encoding using an optical frequency basis. Experimental data also support a quantum-mechanical description of vacuum noise.

Study Design. Development of an automatic measurement algorithm and comparison with manual measurement methods. Objectives. To develop a new computer-based method for automatic measurement of vertebral rotation in idiopathic scoliosis from computed tomography images and to compare the automatic method with two manual measurement techniques. Summary of Background Data. Techniques have been developed for vertebral rotation measurement in idiopathic scoliosis using plain radiographs, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance images. All of these techniques require manual selection of landmark points and are therefore subject to interobserver and intraobserver error. Methods. We developed a new method for automatic measurement of vertebral rotation in idiopathic scoliosis using a symmetry ratio algorithm. The automatic method provided values comparable with Aaro and Ho's manual measurement methods for a set of 19 transverse computed tomography slices through apical vertebrae, and with Aaro's method for a set of 204 reformatted computed tomography images through vertebral endplates. Results. Confidence intervals (95%) for intraobserver and interobserver variability using manual methods were in the range 5.5 to 7.2. The mean (+/- SD) difference between automatic and manual rotation measurements for the 19 apical images was -0.5 degrees +/- 3.3 degrees for Aaro's method and 0.7 degrees +/- 3.4 degrees for Ho's method. The mean (+/- SD) difference between automatic and manual rotation measurements for the 204 endplate images was 0.25 degrees +/- 3.8 degrees. Conclusions. The symmetry ratio algorithm allows automatic measurement of vertebral rotation in idiopathic scoliosis without intraobserver or interobserver error due to landmark point selection.

Few educational campaigns have focused on bowel cancer, though studies have indicated that members of the community need and want current information about relevant issues. In order to facilitate research in this area, reliable and valid measures of community attitudes are needed. Content validity of a survey instrument was obtained through use of a Delphi process with Directors of Education from the Australia Cancer Council and focus group discussions with informed members of the public. The subsequent survey of community perceptions about colorectal cancer included a broad range of content areas related to the risk of bowel cancer, preventing and coping with bowel cancer and beliefs about susceptibility and severity. The construct validity of these content areas was investigated by use of a factor analysis and confirmation of an association with related predictor variables. Two measures related to personal influence and anticipated coping responses showed favourable psychometric properties, including moderate to high levels of internal consistency and test-retest reliability. A test of the concurrent validity of these measures requires further development of instruments related to colorectal cancer or adaptation of measures from other areas of health research. The measurement of exchangeable cations in saline soils is limited by the difficulty in accurately separating soluble cations from exchangeable cations. A method is examined for saline soils in which exchangeable cations are calculated as the total extractable cations minus the concentration of soil solution (soluble) cations. In addition, a further two standard methods were investigated, one which assumes the total soil extractable cations are exchangeable, the other utilises a pretreatment to remove soluble salts prior to measurement of the remaining (exchangeable) cations. After equilibration with a range of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) solutions at various ionic strengths, the exchangeable cation concentrations of two soils (Dermosol and Vertosol) were determined by these methods and compared to known values. The assumption that exchangeable cations can be estimated as the total soil extractable cations, although valid at low ionic strength, resulted in an overestimation of exchangeable Na and Ca concentrations at higher ionic strengths due to the presence of soluble salts. Pretreatment with ethanol and glycerol was found to effectively remove soluble salts thus allowing the accurate measurement of the effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC), however, dilution associated with the pretreatment process decreased concentrations of exchangeable Ca while simultaneously increasing exchangeable Na. Using the proposed method, good correlations were found between known and measured concentrations of exchangeable Na (Dermosol: y=0.873x and Vertosol: y=0.960x) and Ca (Dermosol: y=0.906x, and Vertosol: y=1.05x). Therefore, for soils with an ionic strength of approximately 50 mM (ECse 4 dS m-1) or greater (in which exchangeable cation concentrations are overestimated by assuming the total soil cations are exchangeable), concentrations can be calculated as difference between total extractable cations and soluble cations.

Tissue Doppler (TD) assessment of dysynchrony (DYS) is established in evaluation for bi-ventricular pacing. Time to regional minimal volume by real-time 3D echo (3D) has been applied to DYS. 3D offers simultaneous assessment of all segments and may limit errors in localization of maximum delay due to off-axis images. We compared TD and 3D for assessment of DYS. 27 patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy (aged 60±11 years, 85% male) underwent TD with generation of regional velocity curves. The interval between QRS onset and maximal systolic velocity (TTV) was measured in 6 basal and 6 mid-cavity segments. Onthe same day,3Dwas performed and data analysed offline with Q-Lab software (Philips, Andover, MA). Using 12 analogous regional time-volume curves time to minimal volume (T3D)was calculated. The standard deviation (S.D.) between segments in TTV and T3D was calculated as a measure ofDYS. In 7 patients itwas not possible to measureT3D due to poor images. In the remaining 20, LV diastolic volume, systolic volume and EF were 128±35 ml, 68±23 ml and 46±13%, respectively. Mean TTV was less than mean T3D (150±33ms versus 348±54 ms; p < 0.01). The intrapatient range was 20–210ms for TTV and 0–410ms for T3D. Of 9 patients (45%) with significantDYS (S.D. TTV > 32 ms), S.D. T3D was 69±37ms compared to 48±34ms in those without DYS (p = ns). In DYS patients there was concordance of the most delayed segment in 4 (44%) cases. Therefore, different techniques for assessing DYS are not directly comparable. Specific cut-offs for DYS are needed for each technique.

The optical forces in optical tweezers can be robustly modeled over a broad range of parameters using generalsed Lorenz–Mie theory. We describe the procedure, and show how the combination of experimental measurement of properties of the trap coupled with computational modeling, can allow unknown parameters of the particle—in this case, the refractive index—to be determined.

Conventional detection scheme for self-mixing sensors uses an integrated photodiode within the laser package to monitor the self mixing signal. This arrangement can be simplified by directly obtaining the self-mixing signals across the laser diode itself and omitting the photodiode. This work reports on a Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) based selfmixing sensor using the laser junction voltage to obtain the selfmixing signal. We show that the same information can be obtained with only minor changes to the extraction circuitry leading to potential cost saving with reductions in component costs and complexity and significant increase in bandwidth favoring high speed modulation. Experiments using both photo current and voltage detection were carried out and the results obtained show good agreement with the theory.
