Segregation band formation in Al-Si die castings

Banded defects are often found in high-pressure die castings. These bands can contain segregation, porosity, and/or tears, and changing casting conditions and alloy are known to change the position and make-up of the bands. Due to the complex, dynamic nature of the high-pressure die-casting (HPDC) process, it is very difficult to study the effect of individual parameters on band formation. In the work presented here, bands of segregation similar to those found in cold-chamber HPDC aluminum alloys were found in laboratory gravity die castings. Samples were cast with a range of fraction solids from 0 to 0.3 and the effect of die temperature and external solid fraction on segregation bands was investigated. The results are considered with reference to the theological properties of the filling semisolid metal and a formation mechanism for bands is proposed by considering flow past a solidifying immobile wall layer.

The large scale distribution of galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster

We present new results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 182 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) based on observations with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST). In this paper we present new measurements to give a total sample of redshifts for 710 bright (R less than or equal to 16.6) galaxies, of which 464 are members of the SSC (8000 < υ < 18 000 km s(-1)). Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (upsilon approximate to 14 500 km s(-1)) extends further than previously realised, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 10 degrees by 20 degrees on the sky (35 Mpc by 70 Mpc, for H-0 = 75 km s(-1) Mpc(-1)). There is also a significant structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell 3571 cluster complex (upsilon approximate to 12 000 km s(-1)) with a caustic structure evident out to a radius of 6 Mpc. These galaxies seem to link two previously identified sheets of galaxies and establish a connection with a third one at (V) over bar = 15 000 km s(-1) near RA = 13(h). They also tend to fill the gap of galaxies between the foreground Hydra-Centaurus region and the more distant SSC. We calculate galaxy overdensities of 5.0+/-0.1 over the 182 square degree region surveyed and 3.3+.-0.1 in a 159 square degree region excluding rich clusters. Over the large region of our survey the inter-cluster galaxies make up 46 per cent of all galaxies in the SSC region and may contribute a similar amount of mass to the cluster galaxies.

Naturopathic and Western herbal medicine practice in Australia - a workforce survey

Background: Despite substantial growth in the use of complementary medicine, no comprehensive national study has been undertaken of the naturopathic and Western herbal medicine component of the healthcare workforce in Australia. This study aimed to examine the nature of these practices and this currently unregulated workforce in Australia. Methods: A comprehensive survey questionnaire was developed in consultation with the profession and distributed nationally to all members of the naturopathic and Western herbal medicine workforce. Results: The practices of herbal medicine and naturopathy make up a sizeable component of the Australian healthcare sector, with approximately 1.9 million consultations annually and an estimated turnover of $AUD 85 million in consultations (excluding the cost of medicines). A large proportion of patients are referred to practitioners by word of mouth. Up to one third of practitioners work in multidisciplinary clinics with other registered sectors of the healthcare community. The number of adverse events associated with herbal medicines, nutritional substances and homoeopathic medicines recorded in Australia is substantial and the types of events reported are not trivial. Data suggest that practitioners will experience one adverse event every 11 months of full-time practice, with 2.3 adverse events for every 1000 consultations (excluding mild gastrointestinal effects). Conclusion: These data confirm the considerable degree of utilisation of naturopathic and Western herbal medicine practitioners by the Australian public. However, there is a need to examine whether statutory regulation of practitioners of naturopathy and Western herbal medicine is required to better protect the public. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Epigenetics of lung cancer

Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression that occur without changes in DNA sequence. It has a role in determining when and where a gene is expressed during development. Perhaps the most well known epigenetic mechanism is DNA methylation whereby cytosines at position 5 in CpG dinucleotides are methylated. Histone modification is another form of epigenetic control, which is quite complex and diverse. Histones and DNA make up the nucleosome which is the structural unit of chromatin which are involved in packaging DNA. Apart from the crucial role epigenetics plays in embryonic development, transcription, chromatin structure, X chromosome inactivation and genomic imprinting, its role in an increasing number of human diseases is more and more recognized. These diseases include cancer, and lung cancer in particular has been increasingly studied for the potential biological role of epigenetic changes with the promise of better and novel diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Structure and dynamics of the Shapley Supercluster - Velocity catalogue, general morphology and mass

We present results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 285 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC), based on a set of 10 529 velocity measurements (including 1201 new ones) on 8632 galaxies obtained from various telescopes and from the literature. Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (v approximate to 14 500 km s(-1)) extends further than previous estimates, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 12 degrees by 30 degrees on the sky (30 x 75 h(-1) Mpc). There is also a connecting structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell 3571 cluster complex (v approximate to 12 000 km s(-1)). These galaxies seem to link two previously identified sheets of galaxies and establish a connection with a third one at v = 15 000 km s(-1) near RA = 13(h). They also tend to fill the gap of galaxies between the foreground Hydra-Centaurus region and the more distant SSC. In the velocity range of the Shapley Supercluster (9000 km s(-1) < cz < 18 000 km s(-1)), we found redshift-space overdensities with b(j) < 17.5 of similar or equal to 5.4 over the 225 square degree central region and similar or equal to 3.8 in a 192 square degree region excluding rich clusters. Over the large region of our survey, we find that the intercluster galaxies make up 48 per cent of the observed galaxies in the SSC region and, accounting for the different completeness, may contribute nearly twice as much mass as the cluster galaxies. In this paper, we discuss the completeness of the velocity catalogue, the morphology of the supercluster, the global overdensity, and some properties of the individual galaxy clusters in the Supercluster.

Combining influence maps and cellular automata for reactive game agents

Agents make up an important part of game worlds, ranging from the characters and monsters that live in the world to the armies that the player controls. Despite their importance, agents in current games rarely display an awareness of their environment or react appropriately, which severely detracts from the believability of the game. Some games have included agents with a basic awareness of other agents, but they are still unaware of important game events or environmental conditions. This paper presents an agent design we have developed, which combines cellular automata for environmental modeling with influence maps for agent decision-making. The agents were implemented into a 3D game environment we have developed, the EmerGEnT system, and tuned through three experiments. The result is simple, flexible game agents that are able to respond to natural phenomena (e.g. rain or fire), while pursuing a goal.

Hazard detection in older adult drivers

Older adults make up an increasing propordon of automobile drivers in Australia. Despite the fact that older drivers generally drive much less than younger drivers, there is a disdnct increase in accidents, fatalides and injuries in drivers over age 65 (per actual kilometres driven). Accurate means of screening older adults to idendfy those at increased risk of motor vehicle accidents have proved elusive. Neuropsychological assessment and clinical examinadon are not well-correlated with accident risk. On-road tesdng, which is more highly correlated with accident risk, is expensive and dme-consuming, as well as being less suitable as a screening process. Hazard percepdon methods have been used as an effecdve screening method for idendfying younger adults at increased risk of accidents. A brief video-based hazard percepdon screening test involving footage of genuine traffic hazards for use on older individuals will be presented.

Global flows of foreign talent: Identity anxieties in Singapore's ethnoscape

This paper draws on Appadurai's (1996) concept of ethnoscapes — the global flow of people or what has become increasingly popularized as the global flow of talent. Singapore has initiated a foreign talent policy to compete for a global pool of talent to make up for its shortfall of indigenous work-force. The rationale for recruiting foreign talent is informed by a nationalist competitive ideology to sustain Singapore in the new knowledge-based economy. This paper examines the competing and dissenting discourses surrounding the foreign talent policy. It argues that the mobility of migratory flow has transformative and disruptive effects at the level of culture and the identity landscape of Singapore, where its discursive cultural boundaries are drawn according to a nationalist framework. Drawing on theories and concepts of ‘diaspora’, ‘hybridity’, and ‘third space’, these are the political and cultural issues that this paper attempts to tease out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
