There has been little study of economic and general attitudes towards the conservation of the Asian elephant. This paper reports and analyses results from surveys conducted in Sri Lanka of attitudes of urban dwellers and farmers towards nature conservation in general and the elephant conservation in particular. The analyses are based on urban and a rural sample. Contingent valuation techniques are used as survey instruments. Multivariate logit regression analysis is used to analyse the respondents' attitudes towards conservation of elephants. It is found that, although some variations occurred between the samples, the majority of the respondents (both rural and urban) have positive attitudes towards nature conservation in general. However, marked differences in attitudes toward elephant conservation are evident between these two samples: the majority of urban respondents were in favour of elephant conservation; rural respondents expressed a mixture of positive and negative attitudes. Overall, considerable unrecorded and as yet unutilised economic support for conservation of wild elephants exists in Sri Lanka. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This review paper compares the differences in prevalence, and environmental and genetic risk factors for Parkinson's disease between Chinese and Caucasian subjects. Comparison of age-specific prevalence between Chinese people and Caucasians suggests that the prevalence is lower in the Chinese ( at least in the past), although the prevalence rate in China appears to be rising. Distinctions in environmental risk factors and genetic factors are discussed. The difference in prevalence may be due to distinctions in environmental and genetic risk factors as well as the complex interaction between these environmental and genetic factors, although discrepancies in methodology for prevalence surveys can also be an explanation. This study developed and tested a model of job uncertainty for survivors and victims of downsizing. Data were collected from three samples of employees in a public hospital, each representing three phases of the downsizing process: immediately before the announcement of the redeployment of staff, during the implementation of the downsizing, and towards the end of the official change programme. As predicted, levels of job uncertainty and personal control had a direct relationship with emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction, In addition, there was evidence to suggest that personal control mediated the relationship between job uncertainty and employee adjustment, a pattern of results that varied across each of the three phases of the change event. From the perspective of the organization's overall climate, it was found that levels of job uncertainty, personal control and job satisfaction improved and/or stabilized over the downsizing process. During the implementation phase, survivors experienced higher levels of personal control than victims, but both groups of employees reported similar levels of job uncertainty. We discuss the implications of our results for strategically managing uncertainty during and after organizational change.

Objective: Partnerships in mental health care, particularly between public and private psychiatric services, are being increasingly recognized as important for optimizing patient management and the efficient organization of services. However, public sector mental health services and private psychiatrists do not always work well together and there seem to be a number of barriers to effective collaboration. This study set out to investigate the extent of collaborative 'shared care' arrangements between a public mental health service and private psychiatrists practising nearby. It also examined possible barriers to collaboration and some possible solutions to the identified problems. Method: A questionnaire examining the above factors was sent to all public sector mental health clinicians and all private psychiatrists in the area. Results: One hundred and five of the 154 (68.2%) public sector clinicians and 103 of the 194 (53.1%) private psychiatrists returned surveys. The main barriers to successful collaboration identified by members of both sectors were: 'Difficulty communicating' endorsed by 71.4% of public clinicians and 72% of private psychiatrists, 'Confusion of roles and responsibilities' endorsed by 62.9% and 66%, respectively, and 'Different treatment approach' by 47.6% and 45.6%, respectively. Over 60% of private psychiatrists identified problems with access to the public system as a barrier to successful shared care arrangements. It also emerged, as hypothesized, that the public and private systems tend to manage different patient populations and that public clinicians in particular are not fully aware of the private psychiatrists' range of expertise. This would result in fewer referrals for shared care across the sectors. Conclusions: A number of barriers to public sector clinicians and private psychiatrists collaborating in shared care arrangements were identified. The two groups surveyed identified similar barriers. Some of these can potentially be addressed by changes to service systems. Others require cultural shifts in both sectors. Improved communications including more opportunities for formal and informal meetings between people working in the two sectors would be likely to improve the understanding of the complementary sector's perspective and practice. Further changes would be expected to require careful work between the sectors on training, employment and practice protocols and initiatives, to allow better use of the existing services and resources.

Irrigation practices that are profligate in their use of water have come under closer scrutiny by water managers and the public. Trickle irrigation has the propensity to increase water use efficiency but only if the system is designed to meet the soil and plant conditions. Recently we have provided a software tool, WetUp (http://www.clw.csiro.au/products/wetup/), to calculate the wetting patterns from trickle irrigation emitters. WetUp uses an analytical solution to calculate the wetted perimeter for both buried and surface emitters. This analytical solution has a number of assumptions, two of which are that the wetting front is defined by water content at which the hydraulic conductivity (K) is I mm day(-1) and that the flow occurs from a point source. Here we compare the wetting patterns calculated with a 2-dimensional numerical model, HYDRUS2D, for solving the water flow into typical soils with the analytical solution. The results show that the wetting patterns are similar, except when the soil properties result in the assumption of a point source no longer being a good description of the flow regime. Difficulties were also experienced with getting stable solutions with HYDRUS2D for soils with low hydraulic conductivities. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The study was a comparison of bioassay and HPLC analysis of artesunate (ARTS) and dihydroartemisinin (DHA) in plasma. ARTS and DHA in plasma samples from patients treated with ARTS were quantified by HPLC and expressed as DHA. DHA-equivalents in the same plasma samples were measured using a standardised parasite culture technique. DHA concentrations estimated by both methods were highly correlated (bioassay = 0.96 x HPLC + 11.0; r(2) = 0.92). At high concentrations ( > 12 000 nmol/l) bioassay sometimes overestimated DHA. Bioassay of active drug in plasma correlates well with specific chemical analysis by HPLC. ARTS and DHA appear to account for the total antimalarial activity in plasma after ARTS administration. There has been little investigation into whether or not differences exist in the nature of physical impairment associated with neck pain of whiplash and insidious origin. This study examined the neck flexor synergy during performance of the cranio-cervical flexion test, a test targeting the action of the deep neck flexors. Seventy-five volunteer subjects participated in this study and were equally divided between Group 1, asymptomatic control subjects, Group 2, subjects with insidious onset neck pain and Group 3, subjects with neck pain following a whiplash injury. The cranio-cervical flexion test was performed in five progressive stages of increasing cranio-cervical flexion range. Subjects' performance was guided by feedback from a pressure sensor inserted behind the neck which monitored the slight flattening of the cervical lordosis which occurs with the contraction of longus colli. Myoelectric signals (EMG) were detected from the muscles during performance of the test. The results indicated that both the insidious onset neck pain and whiplash groups had higher measures of EMG signal amplitude (normalized root mean square) in the sternocleidomastoid during each stage of the test compared to the control subjects (all P

In the ionotropic glutamate receptor, the global conformational changes induced by partial agonists are smaller than those induced by full agonists. However, in the pentameric ligand-gated ion channel receptor family, the structural basis of partial agonism is not understood. This study investigated whether full and partial agonists induce different conformation changes in the glycine receptor chloride channel ( GlyR). A substituted cysteine accessibility analysis demonstrated previously that glycine binding induced an increase in surface accessibility of all residues from Arg(271) to Lys(276) in the M2-M3 domain of the homomeric alpha1 GlyR. Here we compare the surface accessibility changes induced by the full agonist, glycine, and the partial agonist, taurine. In GlyRs incorporating the A272C, S273C, L274C, or P275C mutation, the reaction rate of the cysteine-specific compound, methanethiosulfonate ethyltrimethylammonium, depended on how strongly the receptors were activated but was agonist-independent. Reaction rates could not be compared in the R271C and K276C mutant GlyRs because methanethiosulfonate ethyltrimethylammonium did not modify the extremely small currents induced by saturating taurine or equivalent low glycine concentrations. The results indicate that bound taurine and glycine molecules impose identical conformational changes to the M2-M3 domain. We therefore conclude that the higher efficacy of glycine is due to an increased ability to stabilize a common activated configuration.

In this paper we utilise a stochastic address model of broadcast oligopoly markets to analyse the Australian broadcast television market. In particular, we examine the effect of the presence of a single government market participant in this market. An examination of the dynamics of the simulations demonstrates that the presence of a government market participant can simultaneously generate positive outcomes for viewers as well as for other market suppliers. Further examination of simulation dynamics indicates that privatisation of the government market participant results in reduced viewer choice and diversity. We also demonstrate that additional private market participants would not result in significant benefits to viewers.

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) performance is directly affected by the competition between polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs). This study investigates the effects of carbon source on PAO and GAO metabolism. Enriched PAO and GAO cultures were tested with the two most commonly found volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in wastewater systems, acetate and propionate. Four sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated under similar conditions and influent compositions with either acetate or propionate as the sole carbon source. The stimulus for selection of the PAO and GAO phenotypes was provided only through variation of the phosphorus concentration in the feed. The abundance of PAOs and GAOs was quantified using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH). In the acetate fed PAO and GAO reactors, Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis (a known PAO) and Candidatus Competibacter phosphatis (a known GAO) were present in abundance. A novel GAO, likely belonging to the group of Alphaproteobacteria, was found to dominate the propionate fed GAO reactor. The results clearly show that there are some very distinctive differences between PAOs and GAOs in their ability to take up acetate and propionate. PAOs enriched with acetate as the sole carbon source were immediately able to take up propionate, likely at a similar rate as acetate. However, an enrichment of GAOs with acetate as the sole carbon source took up propionate at a much slower rate (only about 5% of the rate of acetate uptake on a COD basis) during a short-term switch in carbon source. A GAO enrichment with propionate as the sole carbon source took up acetate at a rate that was less than half of the propionate uptake rate on a COD basis. These results, along with literature reports showing that PAOs fed with propionate (also dominated by Accumulibacter) can immediately switch to acetate, suggesting that PAOs are more adaptable to changes in carbon source as compared to GAOs. This study suggests that the PAO and GAO competition could be influenced in favour of PAOs through the provision of propionate in the feed or even by regularly switching the dominant VFA species in the wastewater. Further study is necessary in order to provide greater support for these hypotheses. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We apply the projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation (PGPE) formalism to the experimental problem of the shift in critical temperature T-c of a harmonically confined Bose gas as reported in Gerbier , Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 030405 (2004). The PGPE method includes critical fluctuations and we find the results differ from various mean-field theories, and are in best agreement with experimental data. To unequivocally observe beyond mean-field effects, however, the experimental precision must either improve by an order of magnitude, or consider more strongly interacting systems. This is the first application of a classical field method to make quantitative comparison with experiment.
