Extracellular polysaccharides from three Erythroclonium spp. were shown, by a combination of compositional, linkage analyses, and Fourier transform infrared and C-13-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, to be highly substituted carrageenans with at least five types of repeating disaccharide units. These are the carrabiose 2,4'-disulfate of iota-carrageenan, carrabiose 2-sulfate of alpha-carrageenan, the 6'-O-methylated counterparts of each of these repeating units, and 4',6'-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)carrabiose 2-sulfate. The polysaccharides also contain significant amounts of unsubstituted, 4-linked galactopyranose and small amounts of 4-linked 3-O-methylgalactopyranose and terminal glycosyl residues. The carrageenan preparations of the three species are similar, differing only in the proportions of some components. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Ten Australian representatives from seven of the 10 genera presently constituting the family Cystolcloniaceae have been analyzed for their cell-wall galactans. Included in our survey are the monotypic Australian-endemic genera Austroclonium, Gloiophyllis, Erythronaema, and Stictosporum, one species of Craspedocarpus, three species of Rhodophyllis, and two species of Calliblepharis. As one of the species of the latter genus is endemic to Western Australia and presently undescribed, we illustrate its habit and anatomical features in formally proposing to name it Calliblepharis celatospora Kraft, sp. nov. All the species surveyed essentially produce typical iota (iota)-carrageenans, with the exception of Austroclonium. The sulfated galactans from Austroclonium predominantly contain the repeating units of iota-, alpha (alpha)-, and 6'-O-methylated iota- and alpha-carrageenans; whether these exist as discrete polysaccharides or a complex hybrid structure was not resolved. Thus, Austroclonium carrageenans resemble the polysaccharides from Rhabdonia, Areschougia, and Erythroclonium. Although these latter three genera are currently included in the large gigartinalean family Solieriaceae, all produce significantly different carrageenans from Solieria itself and related genera such as Eucheuma, Kappaphycus, Betaphycus, Sarcodiotheca, Agardhiella, Sarconema, and Callophycus. In consideration of these findings, as well as of significant anatomical similarities, we provisionally recommend reestablishment of the family Rhabdoniaceae Kylin (as the family Areschougiaceae J. Agardh) for Rhabdonia, Areschougia, Erythroclonium, and Austroclonium.

The carrageenan from two Australian specimens of the red alga Sarconema filiforme was shown by a combination of compositional analyses, linkage analysis, and Fourier transform infrared and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to be composed predominantly of a hybrid or mixture of carrabiose 2-sulfate (the repeating unit of alpha-carrageenan), carrabiose 2,4'-disulfate (the repeating unit of iota-carrageenan), and the pyruvated unit 4',6'-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)carrabiose 2-sulfate. Solieria, the type genus of the commercially important red algal family Solieriaceae (Gigartinales), contains seven or eight species, three of which are represented in Australia. The cell-wall galactans of the most common Australian Solieria species, S. robusta (Greville) Kylin, were analysed by a combination of compositional assays, linkage analysis, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. They are shown to be composed predominantly of carrabiose 2,4'-disulphate units (the repeating unit of iota-carrageenan) and a significant proportion of 4',6'-pyruvated carrabiose 2-sulphate units. The constituent sugars, pyruvate content, FTIR spectrum, and linkage and substitution patterns of the galactans from Tikvahiella candida Kraft et Gabrielson, an adelphoparasite of Solieria robusta, closely resemble those of its host and furnish evidence in support of a close phylogenetic relationship between the two species.

Polysaccharides from the red alga Phacelocarpos peperocarpos were extracted with hot water, clarified, and precipitated with 2-propanol. The native preparation was highly sulfated (36.2% w/w). Alkali modification decreased the sulfate content by 2.0% w/w. The alkali-modified polysaccharide is composed mostly of galactose (Gal, 51 mol%) and 3,6-anhydrogalactose (AnGal, 41 mol%), with minor amounts of a mono-O-methylgalactose (MeGal, 1 mol%), xylose (Xyl, 6 mol%), and glucose (Glc, 1 mol%). The FTIR spectrum of the alkali-modified polysaccharide resembled K-carrageenan with absorption at 930 cm(-1) (indicative of AnGal) and 850 cm(-1) (Gal ii-sulfate). However, an additional, major band of absorption occurred at 820 cm(-1) indicating the presence of equatorial sulfate ester substitution at O-6 of Gal residues, A combination of linkage and C-13 NMR spectroscopic analyses showed that the polysaccharide was composed predominantly of a novel repeating-unit, O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl 4,6-disulfate)-(1 --> 4)-3,6-anhydro-alpha-D-galactopyranose. Minor structural variations also occurred, including alternative patterns of sulfation and the presence of terminal Xylp, The location of the terminal Xylp residues was not certain but evidence supported their attachment at O-3 of some 4-linked Galp residues. The cell-wall galactans remain unchanged during the life cycle of the alga. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Cell-wall polysaccharides from six species of red algae of the genus Callophycus were mainly galactans comprised predominantly of galactose (Gal) and 3,6-anhydrogalactose (AnGal), and were rich in pyruvate and sulfate. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the polysaccharides superficially resembled that of alpha-carrageenan (composed of the repeating disaccharide carrabiose 2-sulfate), with major bands of absorption indicative of if-linked AnGal, axial 2-sulfate on 4-linked AnGal, and unsulfated, 3-linked Gal. The FTIR spectra of solutions of Callophycus polysaccharides in D2O-phosphate buffer displayed absorption, corresponding to the carboxylate anion of the pyruvate acetal substituent. Methylation analysis showed that 3,4,6-linked Galp (interpreted as 4,6-pyruvated, 3-linked Galp) and 2,4-linked AnGalp (interpreted as 4-linked AnGalp 2-sulfate) were the dominant links, together with significant quantities of 3-linked Galp. Proton-decoupled C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed the polysaccharides to be composed predominantly of pyruvated carrageenans. The C-13 NMR spectra were completely assigned by a J-modulated spin-echo pulse sequence and 2D experiments employing gradient Heteronuclear Multiple Bond Correlation (HMBC), C-13/H-1 Heteronuclear Multiple Quantum Coherence (HMQC), and HMQC Total Correlation Spectroscopy (HMQC-TOCSY). The Callophycus galactans thus consist predominantly of the novel repeating disaccharide 4',6'-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)carrabiose 2-sulfate and minor amounts of the alpha-carrageenan repeating unit (carrabiose 2-sulfate), and other structural variations. The three Australian-endemic species comprising the genus Aresehougia have been examined to determine the structure of their nonfibrillar wall components. The polysaccharide extracted from the most widely distributed species, A. congesta (Turner) J. Agardh, was shown by compositional analyses, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, linkage analysis, and C-13-NMR spectroscopy to be a carrageenan composed predominantly of the repeating disaccharides 6'-O-methylcarrabiose 2,4'-disulfate, carrabiose 2,4-disulfate (the repeating unit of L-carrageenan), 4',6'-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)carrabiose 2-sulfate, and 6'-O-methylcarrabiose 2-sulfate. The carrageenan also contained small amounts of 4-linked Galp residues, some bearing methyl ether substitution at O-3 and some possibly bearing sulfate ester and/or glycosyl substitutions at O-3. The A. congesta carrageenan had unique rheological properties, its gels having some similarities to those of commercial iota -carrageenan but with the viscosity of commercial lambda -carrageenan. Polysaccharides from A. ligulata Harvey ex J. Agardh and A. stuartii Harvey were shown by constituent sugar and FTIR analyses to be sulfated galactans rich in mono-O-methylgalactose. The carrageenan structures of Areschougia spp. were consistent with those of the genera Rhabdonia, Erythroclonium, and Austroclonium, the other genera constituting the family Areschougiaceae.

A grazing trial to study the effect of stocking rate on animal production and botanical composition of Gallon panic (Panicum maximum) and Estrella grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis) was conducted in the central region of the Paraguayan Chaco between 1992 and 1998. The experiment included 6 stocking rates (0.5, 0.8. 1.1, 1.4. 1.7 and 2.0 AU/ha) on individual 4-ha paddocks. The pasture treatments were continuously grazed by yearling steers. replaced annually, over a 4-year grazing period. No fertiliser was used. Botanical composition was recorded annually in autumn from 1992 to 1998 while animal production data were recorded monthly from 1992 to 1996. Relationships between animal productivity and stocking rates were determined by regression analysis. Gallon panic produced greater liveweight gains per head than Estrella grass at low and intermediate stocking rates. However, the slope of the linear relationship between liveweight gain per head and stocking rate increased each year in Gallon panic indicating that the productivity of this grass progressively declined at higher stocking rates over the period of observation. Estrella grass showed less sensitivity to stocking rate but was affected severely by periods of low rainfall.

We examined the burst swimming performance of two Antarctic fishes, Trematomus bernacchii and T. centronotus, at five temperatures between -1 degreesC and 10 degreesC. As Antarctic fishes are considered one of the most cold specialised and stenothermal of all ectotherms, we predicted they would possess a narrow thermal performance breadth for burst swimming and a correlative decrease in performance at high temperatures. Burst swimming was assessed by videotaping swimming sequences with a 50-Hz video camera and analysing the sequences frame-by-frame to determine maximum velocity, the distance moved throughout the initial 200 ms, and the time taken to reach maximum velocity. In contrast to our prediction, we found both species possessed a wide thermal performance breadth for burst swimming. Although maximum swimming velocity for both T. bernacchii and T. centronotus was significantly highest at 6 degreesC, maximum velocity at ah other test temperatures was less than 20% lower. Thus, it appears that specialisation to a highly stable and cold environment is not necessarily associated with a narrow thermal performance breadth for burst swimming in Antarctic fish. We also examined the ability of the Antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki to acclimate their burst-swimming performance to different temperatures. We exposed P, borchgrevinki to either -1 degreesC or 4 degreesC for 4 weeks and tested their burst-swimming performance at four temperatures between -1 degreesC and 10 degreesC. Burst-swimming performance of Pagothenia borchgrevinki was unaffected by exposure to either -1 degreesC or 4 degreesC for 4 weeks. Maximum swimming velocity of both acclimation groups was thermally independent over the total temperature range of -1 degreesC to 10 degreesC. Therefore, the loss of any capacity to restructure the phenotype and an inability to thermally acclimate swimming performance appears to be associated with inhabiting a highly stable thermal environment.

The sexual ornamentation used by male guppies to attract females comprises many components, each of which varies considerably among males. Although natural and sexual selection have been shown to contribute to divergence among populations in male sexual ornaments, the role of sexual selection in maintaining polymorphism within populations is less clear. We used both parametric quadratic regression and nonparametric projection pursuit regression techniques to reveal the major axes of non-linear sexual selection on male ornaments. We visualized the fitness surfaces defined by these axes using thin-plate splines to allow a direct comparison of the two methodologies. Identification of the major axes of selection and their visualization was critical in determining the form and strength of nonlinear selection. Both types of analysis revealed fitness surfaces comprising three peaks, suggesting that there is more than one way to make an attractive guppy. Disruptive selection may be an important process underlying the presence of multiple sexual ornaments and may contribute to the maintenance of the high levels of polymorphism in male sexual ornaments found in guppy populations.

The Solieriaceae, has the largest number of genera (16-18) of any family in the carrageenophyte order Gigartinales. One of these genera, Meristotheca, consists of three or four species of foliose, erect to prostrate plants sporadically recorded from the tropics of both hemispheres. The hot-water-soluble polysaccharides from Australian representatives of the type species, M. papulosa, and M. procumbens from Lord Howe Island have been characterized by compositional assays, linkage analysis, and Fourier transform infrared and C-13-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results show that polysaccharides from both species are similar, being predominantly composed of 4-linked 3,6-anhydro-alpha-D-galactopyranose 2-sulphate alternating with 3-linked beta-D-galactopyranose 4-sulphate, as is typical of iota-carrageenan. Small proportions of the 3-linked units occur as the pyruvated residue 4,6-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)-beta-D-galactopyranose, and other minor variations from idealized iota-carrageenan were also detected. The polysaccharides from representatives of Meristotheca are comparable to those of other solieriacean algae analysed to date, but the minor structural variations suggest a closer chemotaxonomic affinity with noneucheumoid genera of the Solieriaceae, such as Sarconema, Solieria, and Tikvahiella, than to the eucheumoid genera Eucheuma, Kappaphycus and Betaphycus (tribe Eucheumatoideae) from which most kappa- and iota-carrageenans are commercially extracted.

The polysaccharides extracted from Claviclonium ovatum were studied by a combination of compositional assays, reductive partial hydrolysis, linkage analysis, Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and C-13, H-1, and C-13/H-1 heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (HMQC) two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The chemical and spectroscopic data showed that the alkali-modified C. ovatum polysaccharides are composed of a nearly idealized repeating unit of 6'-O-methylcarrabiose 2,4'-disulfate (the repeating unit of 6-O-methylated iota-earrageenan), although some minor components were also present. The impact of sex-biased fishing and marine reserve protection on the mud crab Scylla serrata was examined by comparing the catch rates (catch-per-unit-effort, CPUE), mean size, sex ratios and movement of crabs in 2 coastal marine reserves (1.9 and 5.7 km(2)) and 4 fished non-reserve sites in subtropical Australia. Five years after closure, both marine reserves supported higher catch rates and a larger mean size of S. serrata than non-reserve sites. Males dominated catches of S. serrata in both marine reserves, where CPUE was at least twice as high within the reserves compared to non-reserve sites. Male crabs were also 10% larger in the reserves compared to adjacent fished areas, and of the total male catch, over 70% were equal to or greater than legal size compared to less than 50% outside the reserves. The sex ratio of S. serrata was skewed towards females in all nonreserve sites, which was most likely a result of the ban on taking female S. serrata in Moreton Bay. As only male crabs of >= 15 cm CW made up the S. serrata fishery in Moreton Bay, sex ratios of mature male and female crabs were examined, revealing a strong skew (2:1) towards mature males in both marine reserves. Of the 472 S. serrata captured in this study, 338 were tagged in the reserves in order to document movement of the crabs between the reserve and non-reserve sites. Of the 37 recaptured crabs, 73% were recorded inside the reserves, with some spillover (i.e. cross-boundary movement) of crabs recorded in fished areas. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of small (< 6 km(2)) marine reserves for sex-biased exploited fisheries species.

We tested the phenotypic responses of larval striped marsh frogs (Limnodynastes peronii) to the odonate nymph predator, Aeshna brevistyla. When reared in the presence of dragonfly nymphs feeding upon conspecifics of L. peronii larvae the tadpoles showed a strong change in morphology. Morphological changes included an increase in total tail height, but also an unexpected marked change in head-body shape. In addition, we examined how tadpole development, as well as mass and length at metamorphosis, was affected by exposure to dragonfly nymphs. Larval development of L. peronii was strongly influenced by exposure to the predatory behaviour of dragonfly nymphs. Predator-induced tadpoles had significantly slower developmental rates than control larvae. Although metamorphs of non-exposed L. peronii were approximately 33% lighter than predator-exposed metamorphs and possessed lower jump distances, after adjusting for mass there was no difference in jump distance. The newly described morphological response may assist in more accurately relating morphological plasticity to fitness.
