We present new simulation results for the packing of single-center and three-center models of carbon dioxide at high pressure in carbon slit pores. The former shows a series of packing transitions that are well described by our density functional theory model developed earlier. In contrast, these transitions are absent for the three-center model. Analysis of the simulation results shows that alternations of flat-lying molecules and rotated molecules can occur as the pore width is increased. The presence or absence of quadrupoles has negligible effect on these high-density structures.

Understanding the interfacial interactions between the nanofiller and polymer matrix is important to improve the design and manufacture of polymer nanocomposites. This paper reports a molecular dynamic Study on the interfacial interactions and structure of a clay-based polyurethane intercalated nanocomposite. The results show that the intercalation of surfactant (i.e. dioctadecyldlmethyl ammonium) and polyurethane (PU) into the nanoconfined gallery of clay leads to the multilayer structure for both surfactant and PU, and the absence of phase separation for PU chains. Such structural characteristics are attributed to the result of competitive interactions among the surfactant, PU and the clay surface, including van der Waals, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding.

The caseins (alpha(s1), alpha(s2), beta, and kappa) are phosphoproteins present in bovine milk that have been studied for over a century and whose structures remain obscure. Here we describe the chemical synthesis and structure elucidation of the N-terminal segment (1-44) of bovine K-casein, the protein which maintains the micellar structure of the caseins. K-Casein (1-44) was synthesised by highly optimised Boc solid-phase peptide chemistry and characterised by mass spectrometry. Structure elucidation was carried out by circular dichroism and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. CD analysis demonstrated that the segment was ill defined in aqueous medium but in 30% trifluoroethanol it exhibited considerable helical structure. Further, NMR analysis showed the presence of a helical segment containing 26 residues which extends from Pro(8) to Arg(34). This is the first report which demonstrates extensive secondary structure within the casein class of proteins. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The database provides a centralized repository of information on all aspects of cyclic protein biology and addresses issues pertaining to the management and searching of topologically circular sequences. In this experiment, creatinine (C) excretion by sheep was measured when they were fed different diets at different levels of intake. Creatinine excretion was not affected by the level of feed intake or the addition of salt to lucerne-based diets. However, differences between individual animals were significant. Creatinine excretion was significantly affected by diets, which were formulated by combining different amounts of lucerne chaff, oaten chaff and sorghum. It was also found that there were significant diurnal changes in the ratios of purine derivatives to creatinine (PD:C) in 3 hourly urine samples when the animals were fed either once or twice daily, but the average value for the PD:C ratio of any two urine samples taken 12 h apart was close to the daily mean. The results of this experiment suggest that if separate determination of the creatinine excretion by individual animals is made and the average value of the ratio of PD:C in two spot urine samples taken 12 h apart is used to predict PD excretion by spot urine sampling, microbial nitrogen flow can be estimated more accurately than when a fixed value of creatinine excretion is used for all animals and only a single urine sample is taken. This work has demonstrated that for the first time a single RAFT agent (i. e., difunctional) can be used in conjunction with a radical initiator to obtain a desired M-n and PDI with controlled rates of polymerization. Simulations were used not only to verify the model but also to provide us with a predictive tool to generate other MWDs. It was also shown that all the MWDs prepared in this work could be translated to higher molecular weights through chain extension experiments with little or no compromise in the control of end group functionality. The ratio of monofunctional to difunctional SdC(CH2Ph)S- end groups, XPX and XP (where X) S=C(CH2Ph) S-), can be controlled by simply changing the concentration of initiator, AIBN. Importantly, the amount of dead polymer is extremely low and fulfils the criterion as suggested by Szwarc (Nature 1956) that to meet living requirements nonfunctional polymeric species formed by side reactions in the process should be undetectable by analytical techniques. In addition, this novel methodology will allow the synthesis of AB, ABA, and statistical multiblock copolymers with predetermined ratios to be produced in a one-pot reaction.

Mesoporous chromium oxide (Cr2O3) nanocrystals were first synthesized by the thermal decomposition reaction of Cr(NO3)(3)(circle)9H(2)O using citric acid monohydrate (CA) as the mesoporous template agent. The texture and chemistry of chromium oxide nanocrystals were characterized by N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis, and thermoanalytical methods. It was shown that the hydrate water and CA are the crucial factors in influencing the formation of mesoporous Cr2O3 nanocrystals in the mixture system. The decomposition of CA results in the formation of a mesoporous structure with wormlike pores. The hydrate water of the mixture provides surface hydroxyls that act as binders, making the nanocrystals aggregate. The pore structures and phases of chromium oxide are affected by the ratio of precursor-to-CA, thermal temperature, and time.

In this paper we present an algorithm as the combination of a low level morphological operation and model based Global Circular Shortest Path scheme to explore the segmentation of the Right Ventricle. Traditional morphological operations were employed to obtain the region of interest, and adjust it to generate a mask. The image cropped by the mask is then partitioned into a few overlapping regions. Global Circular Shortest Path algorithm is then applied to extract the contour from each partition. The final step is to re-assemble the partitions to create the whole contour. The technique is deemed quite reliable and robust, as this is illustrated by a very good agreement between the extracted contour and the expert manual drawing output.
