ZrO2-Al2O3 composite oxides and supported Ni catalysts were prepared, and characterized by N-2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition was also investigated. This mesoporous composite oxide is shown to be a promising catalyst support. An increase in the catalytic activity and stability of methane and carbon dioxide reforming reaction was resulted from the zirconia addition, especially at 5wt% ZrO2 content. The Ni catalyst supported ZrO2-Al2O3 has a strong resistance to sintering and the carbon deposition in a relatively long-term reaction.

Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the mechanisms of NO-carbon and N2O-carbon reactions. It was the first time that the importance of surface nitrogen groups was addressed in the kinetic behaviors of the NO-carbon reaction. It was found that the off-plane nitrogen groups that are adjacent to the zigzag edge sites and in-plane nitrogen groups that are located on the armchair sites make the bond energy of oxygen desorption even ca. 20% lower than that of the off-plane epoxy group adjacent to zigzag edge sites and in-plane o-quinone oxygen atoms on armchair sites; this may explain the reason why the experimentally obtained activation energy of the NO-carbon reaction is ca. 20% lower than that of the O-2-carbon reaction over 923 K. A higher ratio of oxygen atoms can be formed in the N2O-carbon reaction, because of the lower dissociation energy of N2O, which results in a higher ratio of off-plane epoxy oxygen atoms. The desorption energy of semiquinone with double adjacent off-plane oxygen groups is ca. 20% less than that of semiquinone with only one adjacent off-plane oxygen group. This may be the reason why the activation energy of N2O is also ca. 20% less than that of the O-2-carbon reaction. The new mechanism can also provide a good qualitative comparison for the relative reaction rates of NO-, N2O-, and O-2-carbon reactions. The anisotropic characters of these gas-carbon reactions can also be well explained.

Polycrystalline cerium hydroxysulfate powders have been prepared by soft solution processing using various basic solvents. The crystals prepared have varying morphologies, spherical and flaky, depending on the solvent used. The crystals obtained from distilled water-pyridine and aqueous ammonia solvent mixtures are spherical, whereas those obtained from mixtures of distilled water and ethylenediamine or hydrazine hydrate are flaky. All the crystalline cerium hydroxysulfate samples display luminescence properties. It was found that the flaky crystals generally show a much stronger luminescence than their spherical counterparts.

Anion clay hydrotalcite sorbents were prepared to investigate their adsorption capabilities in the removal of coloured organic substances from various aqueous systems. Anion clay hydrotalcite was found to be particularly effective at removing negatively charged species. Its excellent uptake levels of anionic species can be accounted for by its high surface area and anion exchange ability. That is, coloured substances can be adsorbed on the surface or enter the interlayer region of the clay by anion exchange. In the adsorption of Acid Blue 29 on the anion clay hydrotalcite, an equilibrium time of 1 h with dye removal exceeding 99% was obtained. The hydrotalcite was found to have an adsorption capacity marginally below that of commercial activated carbon. It should be noted that the spent sorbents can be regenerated easily by heating at 723 K to remove all adsorbed organics. The reused sorbents displayed greater adsorption capabilities than the newly prepared hydrotalcite. Hence, the anion clay hydrotalcite is easily recoverable and reusable such that it is a promising sorbent for environmental and purification purposes. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. This paper addresses advanced control of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge process. Based on a previously validated distributed parameter model of the BNR activated sludge process, we present robust multivariable controller designs for the process, involving loop shaping of plant model, robust stability and performance analyses. Results from three design case studies showed that a multivariable controller with stability margins of 0.163, 0.492 and 1.062 measured by the normalised coprime factor, multiplicative and additive uncertainties respectively give the best results for meeting performance robustness specifications. The controller robustly stabilises effluent nutrients in the presence of uncertainties with the behaviour of phosphorus accumulating organisms as well as to effectively attenuate major disturbances introduced as step changes. This study also shows that, performance of the multivariable robust controller is superior to multi-loops SISO PI controllers for regulating the BNR activated sludge process in terms of robust stability and performance and controlling the process using inlet feed flowrate is infeasible. A novel method to prepare mesoporous zirconia was developed. The synthesis was carried out in the presence of PEO surfactants via solid-state reaction. The materials exhibit strong diffraction peak at low 2-theta angle and their nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are typical of IV type with H3 hysteresis loops. The pore structure examined by TEM can be described as wormhole domains. The tetragonal zirconia nanocrystals are uniform in size (around 1.5nm) and their pores center at around 4.6nm. The zirconia nanocrystal growth is mainly via an aggregation mechanism. This study also reveals that the PEO surfactants can interact with the Zr-O-Zr framework to reinforce the thermal stability of zirconia. The ratio of NaOH to ZrOCl2, crystallization and calcination temperature play an important role in the synthesis of mesoporous zirconia.

A series of mesoporous Al2O3 samples with different porous structures and phases were prepared and used as supports for Cu/Al2O3 catalysts. These catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, NMR, TGA, XRD, and UV - vis spectroscopic techniques and tested for the catalytic reaction of N2O decomposition. The activity increased with the increasing calcination temperatures of supports from 450 to 900 degreesC; however, a further increase in calcination temperature up to 1200 degreesC resulted in a significant reduction in activity. Characterization revealed that the calcination temperatures of supports influenced the porous structures and phases of the supports, which in turn affected the dispersions, phases, and activities of the impregnated copper catalyst. The different roles of surface spinel, bulk CuAl2O4, and bulk CuO is clarified for N2O catalytic decomposition. Two mechanism schemes were thus proposed to account for the varying activities of different catalysts.

Chemical engineers are turning to multiscale modelling to extend traditional modelling approaches into new application areas and to achieve higher levels of detail and accuracy. There is, however, little advice available on the best strategy to use in constructing a multiscale model. This paper presents a starting point for the systematic analysis of multiscale models by defining several integrating frameworks for linking models at different scales. It briefly explores how the nature of the information flow between the models at the different scales is influenced by the choice of framework, and presents some restrictions on model-framework compatibility. The concepts are illustrated with reference to the modelling of a catalytic packed bed reactor. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have employed an inverse engineering strategy based on quantitative proteome analysis to identify changes in intracellular protein abundance that correlate with increased specific recombinant monoclonal antibody production (qMab) by engineered murine myeloma (NSO) cells. Four homogeneous NSO cell lines differing in qMab were isolated from a pool of primary transfectants. The proteome of each stably transfected cell line was analyzed at mid-exponential growth phase by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and individual protein spot volume data derived from digitized gel images were compared statistically. To identify changes in protein abundance associated with qMab clatasets were screened for proteins that exhibited either a linear correlation with cell line qMab or a conserved change in abundance specific only to the cell line with highest qMab. Several proteins with altered abundance were identified by mass spectrometry. Proteins exhibiting a significant increase in abundance with increasing qMab included molecular chaperones known to interact directly with nascent immunoglobulins during their folding and assembly (e.g., BiP, endoplasmin, protein disulfide isomerase). 2D-PAGE analysis showed that in all cell lines Mab light chain was more abundant than heavy chain, indicating that this is a likely prerequisite for efficient Mab production. In summary, these data reveal both the adaptive responses and molecular mechanisms enabling mammalian cells in culture to achieve high-level recombinant monoclonal antibody production. Well-mixed blends of poly(ethylene) and poly(styrene) have been synthesized using supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. The morphology of the blends has been conclusively characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Raman microprobe microscopy, and C-13 solid-state cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR (C-13 CPMAS NMR). DSC measurements demonstrate that poly(styrene) in the blends resides solely in the amorphous regions of the poly(ethylene) matrix; however, corroborative evidence from the SAXS experiments shows that poly(styrene) resides within the interlamellar spaces. The existence of nanometer-sized domains of poly(styrene) was shown within a blend of poly(styrene) and poly(ethylene) when formed in supercritical carbon dioxide using Raman microprobe microscopy and C-13 CPMAS NMR spectroscopy coupled with a spin diffusion model. This contrasts with blends formed at ambient pressure in the absence of solvent, in which domains of poly(styrene) in the micrometer size range are formed. This apparent improved miscibility of the two components was attributed to better penetration of the monomer prior to polymerization and increased swelling of the polymer substrate by the supercritical carbon dioxide solvent.

We study here the adsorption of hexane on nanoporous MCM-41 silica at 303, 313, and 323 K, for various pore diameters between 2.40 and 4.24 nm. Adsorption equilibria, measured thermogravimetrically, show that all the isotherms, that are somewhat akin to those of type V, exhibit remarkably sharp capillary adsorption phase transition steps and are reversible. The position of the phase transition step gradually shifts from low to high relative pressure with an increase in the temperature as well as the pore sizes. The isosteric heats of adsorption derived from the equilibrium information using the Clapeyron equation reveal a gradual decrease with increasing adsorbed amount because of the surface heterogeneity but approach a constant value near the phase transition. A decrease in the pore size results in an increase in the isosteric heat of adsorption because of the increased dispersion forces. A simple strategy, based on the Broekhoff and De Boer adsorption theory, successfully interprets the hexane adsorption isotherms for the different pore size MCM-41 samples. The parameters of an empirical expression, used to represent the potential of interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent, are obtained by fitting the monolayer region prior to capillary condensation and the experimental phase transition simultaneously, for some pore sizes. Subsequently, the parameters are used to predict the adsorption isotherm on other pore size samples, which showed good agreement with experimental data.

Hitherto, adsorption has been traditionally used to study only the porous structure in disordered materials, while the structure of the solid phase skeleton has been probed by crystallographic methods such as X-ray diffraction. Here we show that for carbons density functional theory, suitably adapted to consider heterogeneity of the pore walls, can be reliably used to probe features of the solid structure hitherto accessibly only approximately even by crystallographic methods. We investigate a range of carbons and determine pore wall thickness distributions using argon adsorption, with results corroborated by X-ray diffraction.

The diffusion of water into cylinders of polyHEMA and copolymers of HEMA with THFMA, BMA and CHMA were studied over a range of copolymer compositions. The diffusion of water into the polymers was found to follow a Fickian, or case I mechanism. The diffusion coefficients of water were determined from mass measurements and NMR imaging studies. They were found to vary from 1.7 +/- 0.2 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for polyHEMA at 37 degreesC to lower values for the copolymers. The mass of water absorbed at equilibrium relative to the mass of dry polymer varied from 52-58 wt% for polyHEMA to lower values for the copolymers.
