The cheek teeth in dugongs are considered to be largely non-functional whereas the oral horny pads are important both in mechanical disruption of the diet and in conveying seagrass through the mouth. Particle size distributions of digesta from 41 dead stranded dugongs were examined to investigate the relationship between degree of food breakdown, gut region and functional surface area of the mouthparts. The in vitro ease of fracture of major dietary seagrass species were compared. The rate of food breakdown through the gut appears to be more closely linked to fibre level of the diet than to size or age of the dugong and its mouthparts. Low fibre seagrass, for example Halophila ovalis, breaks down at a faster rate than high fibre seagrass, for example Zostera capricorni both in dugong guts and in vitro. Several structural characteristics of seagrass, including level and arrangement of fibre, and water content, make it particularly amenable to mechanical breakdown. The soft mouthparts of the dugong are highly modified so that the entire oral cavity functions to crush low fibre seagrasses. Thus, the dugong has developed an efficient method of food ingestion and mastication that is suited to processing large quantities of soft seagrass during short dive times. The potential cost to the dugong in having lost its hard dental surfaces is that it has become restricted to a low fibre diet.

1. Some of the most damaging invasive plants are dispersed by frugivores and this is an area of emerging importance in weed management. It highlights the need for practical information on how frugivores affect weed population dynamics and spread, how frugivore populations are affected by weeds and what management recommendations are available. 2. Fruit traits influence frugivore choice. Fruit size, the presence of an inedible peel, defensive chemistry, crop size and phenology may all be useful traits for consideration in screening and eradication programmes. By considering the effect of these traits on the probability, quality and quantity of seed dispersal, it may be possible to rank invasive species by their desirability to frugivores. Fruit traits can also be manipulated with biocontrol agents. 3. Functional groups of frugivores can be assembled according to broad species groupings, and further refined according to size, gape size, pre- and post-ingestion processing techniques and movement patterns, to predict dispersal and establishment patterns for plant introductions. 4. Landscape fragmentation can increase frugivore dispersal of invasives, as many invasive plants and dispersers readily use disturbed matrix environments and fragment edges. Dispersal to particular landscape features, such as perches and edges, can be manipulated to function as seed sinks if control measures are concentrated in these areas. 5.Where invasive plants comprise part of the diet of native frugivores, there may be a conservation conflict between control of the invasive and maintaining populations of the native frugivore, especially where other threats such as habitat destruction have reduced populations of native fruit species. 6. Synthesis and applications. Development of functional groups of frugivore-dispersed invasive plants and dispersers will enable us to develop predictions for novel dispersal interactions at both population and community scales. Increasingly sophisticated mechanistic seed dispersal models combined with spatially explicit simulations show much promise for providing weed managers with the information they need to develop strategies for surveying, eradicating and managing plant invasions. Possible conservation conflicts mean that understanding the nature of the invasive plant-frugivore interaction is essential for determining appropriate management.

Background. In the Southeast United States, African Americans have an estimated incidence of hypertension and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) that is five times greater than Caucasians. Higher rates of low birth weight (LBW) among African Americans is suggested to predispose African Americans to the higher risk, possibly by reducing the number of glomeruli that develop in the kidney. This study investigates the relationships between age, race, gender, total glomerular number (N-glom), mean glomerular volume (V-glom), body surface area (BSA), and birth weight. Methods. Stereologic estimates of N-glom and V-glom were obtained using the physical disector/fractionator combination for autopsy kidneys from 37 African Americans and 19 Caucasians. Results. N-glom was normally distributed and ranged from 227,327 to 1,825,380, an 8.0-fold difference. A direct linear relationship was observed between N-glom and birth weight (r=0.423, P=0.0012) with a regression coefficient that predicted an increase of 257,426 glomeruli per kilogram increase in birth weight (alpha=0.050:0.908). Among adults there was a 4.9-fold range in V-glom , and in adults, V-glom was strongly and inversely correlated with N-glom (r=-0.640, P=0.000002). Adult V-glom showed no significant correlation with BSA for males (r=-0.0150, P=0.936), although it did for females (r=0.606, P=0.022). No racial differences in average N-glom or V-glom were observed. Conclusion. Birth weight is a strong determinant of N-glom and thereby of glomerular size in the postnatal kidney. The findings support the hypothesis that LBW by impairing nephron development is a risk factor for hypertension and ESRD in adulthood.

The present study adds to the sparse published Australian literature on the size effect, the book to market (BM) effect and the ability of the Fama French three factor model to account for these effects and to improve on the asset pricing ability of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). The present study extends the 1981–1991 period examined by Halliwell, Heaney and Sawicki (1999) a further 10 years to 2000 and addresses several limitations and findings of that research. In contrast to Halliwell, Heaney and Sawicki the current study finds the three factor model provides significantly improved explanatory power over the CAPM, and evidence that the BM factor plays a role in asset pricing.

Objectives: This pilot study describes a modelling approach to translate group-level changes in health status into changes in preference values, by using the effect size (ES) to summarize group-level improvement. Methods: ESs are the standardized mean difference between treatment groups in standard deviation (SD) units. Vignettes depicting varying severity in SD decrements on the SF-12 mental health summary scale, with corresponding symptom severity profiles, were valued by a convenience sample of general practitioners (n = 42) using the rating scale (RS) and time trade-off methods. Translation factors between ES differences and change in preference value were developed for five mental disorders, such that ES from published meta-analyses could be transformed into predicted changes in preference values. Results: An ES difference in health status was associated with an average 0.171-0.204 difference in preference value using the RS, and 0.104-0.158 using the time trade off. Conclusions: This observed relationship may be particular to the specific versions of the measures employed in the present study. With further development using different raters and preference measures, this approach may expand the evidence base available for modelling preference change for economic analyses from existing data.

Background: False-negative interpretations of do-butamine stress echocardiography (DSE) may be associated with reduced wall stress. using measurements of contraction, we sought whether these segments were actually ischemic but unrecognized or showed normal contraction. Methods. We studied 48 patients (29 men; mean age 60 +/- 10 years) with normal regional function on the basis of standard qualitative interpretation of DSE. At coronary angiography within. 6 months of DSE, 32 were identified as having true-negative and 16 as having false-negative results of DSE. Three apical views were used to measure regional function with color Doppler tissue, integrated backscatter, and strain rate imaging. Cyclic variation of integrated backscatter was measured in 16 segments, and strain rate and peak systolic strain was calculated in 6 walls at rest and peak stress. Results. Segments with false-negative results of DSE were divided into 2 groups with and without low wall stress according to previously published cut-off values. Age, sex, left ventricular mass, left ventricular geometric pattern, and peak workload were not significantly different between patients with true and false-negative results of DSE. Importantly, no significant differences in cyclic variation and strain parameters at rest and peak stress were found among segments with true-and false-negative results of DSE with and without low wall stress. Stenosis severity had no influence on cyclic variation and strain parameters at peak stress. Conclusions: False-negative results of DSE reflect lack of ischemia rather than underinterpretation of regional left ventricular function. Quantitative markers are unlikely to increase the sensitivity of DSE.

The prevalence of obesity in the western world is dramatically rising, with many of these individuals requiring therapeutic intervention for a variety of disease states. Despite the growing prevalence of obesity there is a paucity of information describing how doses should be adjusted, or indeed whether they need to be adjusted, in the clinical setting. This review is aimed at identifying which descriptors of body size provide the most information about the relationship between dose and concentration in the obese. The size descriptors, weight, lean body weight, ideal body weight, body surface area, body mass index, fat-free mass, percent ideal body weight, adjusted body weight and predicted normal body weight were considered as potential size descriptors. We conducted an extensive review of the literature to identify studies that have assessed the quantitative relationship between the parameters clearance (CL) and volume of distribution (V) and these descriptors of body size. Surprisingly few studies have addressed the relationship between obesity and CL or V in a quantitative manner. Despite the lack of studies there were consistent findings: (i) most studies found total body weight to be the best descriptor of V. A further analysis of the studies that have addressed V found that total body weight or another descriptor that incorporated fat mass was the preferred descriptor for drugs that have high lipophilicity; (ii) in contrast, CL was best described by lean body mass and no apparent relationship between lipophilicity or clearance mechanism and preference for body size descriptor was found. In conclusion, no single descriptor described the influence of body size on both CL and V equally well. For drugs that are dosed chronically, and therefore CL is of primary concern, dosing for obese patients should not be based on their total weight. If a weight-based dose individualization is required then we would suggest that chronic drug dosing in the obese subject should be based on lean body weight, at least until a more robust size descriptor becomes available.

A new approach based on the nonlocal density functional theory to determine pore size distribution (PSD) of activated carbons and energetic heterogeneity of the pore wall is proposed. The energetic heterogeneity is modeled with an energy distribution function (EDF), describing the distribution of solid-fluid potential well depth (this distribution is a Dirac delta function for an energetic homogeneous surface). The approach allows simultaneous determining of the PSD (assuming slit shape) and EDF from nitrogen or argon isotherms at their respective boiling points by using a set of local isotherms calculated for a range of pore widths and solid-fluid potential well depths. It is found that the structure of the pore wall surface significantly differs from that of graphitized carbon black. This could be attributed to defects in the crystalline structure of the surface, active oxide centers, finite size of the pore walls (in either wall thickness or pore length), and so forth. Those factors depend on the precursor and the process of carbonization and activation and hence provide a fingerprint for each adsorbent. The approach allows very accurate correlation of the experimental adsorption isotherm and leads to PSDs that are simpler and more realistic than those obtained with the original nonlocal density functional theory.

Networks exhibiting accelerating growth have total link numbers growing faster than linearly with network size and either reach a limit or exhibit graduated transitions from nonstationary-to-stationary statistics and from random to scale-free to regular statistics as the network size grows. However, if for any reason the network cannot tolerate such gross structural changes then accelerating networks are constrained to have sizes below some critical value. This is of interest as the regulatory gene networks of single-celled prokaryotes are characterized by an accelerating quadratic growth and are size constrained to be less than about 10,000 genes encoded in DNA sequence of less than about 10 megabases. This paper presents a probabilistic accelerating network model for prokaryotic gene regulation which closely matches observed statistics by employing two classes of network nodes (regulatory and non-regulatory) and directed links whose inbound heads are exponentially distributed over all nodes and whose outbound tails are preferentially attached to regulatory nodes and described by a scale-free distribution. This model explains the observed quadratic growth in regulator number with gene number and predicts an upper prokaryote size limit closely approximating the observed value. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. The objective was to improve the protocol that was used to obtain the first reported piglets from transferred vitrified and warmed zona-intact blastocysts. Blastocysts were collected from superovulated sows and gilts, centrifuged to polarize lipid, vitrified, warmed and cultured for 24 h or transferred immediately. Removing the zona pellucida after warming increased the number of cells in the surviving blastocysts (zona-free 60.8 +/- 4.3, zona-intact 39.1 +/- 2.8; P < 0.05). Thinning the zona pellucida produced similar results to zona removal. Changing the basal medium of the vitrification and warming solutions from modified PBS to phosphate buffered NCSU-23 increased the number of cells (44.7 +/- 2.2 versus 56.0 +/- 3.9, respectively; P < 0.05). Reducing the plunge temperature of the liquid nitrogen from - 196 degrees C to less than -204 degrees C improved the embryo survival rate (61.9% versus 82.9%, respectively; P < 0.05). These modifications were incorporated into the vitrification protocol that was used to vitrify and warm 105 blastocysts (that were subsequently transferred into four recipients). Three recipients became pregnant, farrowing three litters (average litter size, 5.3; 18.8% embryo survival in farrowing sows). Changing the warming protocol to using sucrose rather than ethylene glycol resulted in a trend towards improved embryo survival (73.5% versus 91.2%) but this was not statistically significant. Incorporating this modification, 203 blastocysts were vitrified, warmed and transferred into seven recipients. Five became pregnant and 36 fetuses were recovered (average litter size 7.2; 24.8% embryo survival in pregnant sows) at Day 40 of pregnancy. In conclusion, changes made to the vitrification protocol improved pregnancy rate and in vivo embryo survival compared to an earlier study using the original protocol. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. A series of TPU nanocomposites were prepared by incorporating organically modified layered silicates with controlled particle size. To our knowledge, this is the first study into the effects of layered silicate diameter in polymer nanocomposites utilizing the same mineral for each size fraction. The tensile properties of these materials were found to be highly dependent upon the size of the layered silicates. A decrease in disk diameter was associated with a sharp upturn in the stress-strain curve and a pronounced increase in tensile strength. Results from SAXS/SANS experiments showed that the layered silicates did not affect the bulk TPU microphase structure and the morphological response of the host TPU to deformation or promote/hinder strain-induced soft segment crystallization. The improved tensile properties of the nanocomposites containing the smaller nanofillers resulted from the layered silicates aligning in the direction of strain and interacting with the TPU sequences via secondary bonding. This phenomenon contributes predominantly above 400% strain once the microdomain architecture has largely been disassembled. Large tactoids that are unable to align in the strain direction lead to concentrated tensile stresses between the polymer and filler, instead of desirable shear stresses, resulting in void formation and reduced tensile properties. In severe cases, such as that observed for the composite containing the largest silicate, these voids manifest visually as stress whitening.

The results of two experiments are reported that examined how performance in a simple interceptive action (hitting a moving target) was influenced by the speed of the target, the size of the intercepting effector and the distance moved to make the interception. In Experiment 1, target speed and the width of the intercepting manipulandum (bat) were varied. The hypothesis that people make briefer movements, when the temporal accuracy and precision demands of the task are high, predicts that bat width and target speed will divisively interact in their effect on movement time (MT) and that shorter MTs will be associated with a smaller temporal variable error (VE). An alternative hypothesis that people initiate movement when the rate of expansion (ROE) of the target's image reaches a specific, fixed criterion value predicts that bat width will have no effect on MT. The results supported the first hypothesis: a statistically reliable interaction of the predicted form was obtained and the temporal VE was smaller for briefer movements. In Experiment 2, distance to move and target speed were varied. MT increased in direct proportion to distance and there was a divisive interaction between distance and speed; as in Experiment 1, temporal VE was smaller for briefer movements. The pattern of results could not be explained by the strategy of initiating movement at a fixed value of the ROE or at a fixed value of any other perceptual variable potentially available for initiating movement. It is argued that the results support pre-programming of MT with movement initiated when the target's time to arrival at the interception location reaches a criterion value that is matched to the pre-programmed MT. The data supported completely open-loop control when MT was less than between 200 and 240 ms with corrective sub-movements increasingly frequent for movements of longer duration.

This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching, with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason, blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors, while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core.
