A new mutual impedance - the receiving mutual impedance - between two normal-mode helical antennas is defined, measured, and theoretically calculated. The variations of the receiving mutual impedance with antenna separation, with frequency, and with excitation source direction are critically investigated. An application of the receiving mutual impedance in direction finding demonstrates its more accurate description of the mutual coupling effect than that using the conventional mutual impedance.

This research work analyses techniques for implementing a cell-centred finite-volume time-domain (ccFV-TD) computational methodology for the purpose of studying microwave heating. Various state-of-the-art spatial and temporal discretisation methods employed to solve Maxwell's equations on multidimensional structured grid networks are investigated, and the dispersive and dissipative errors inherent in those techniques examined. Both staggered and unstaggered grid approaches are considered. Upwind schemes using a Riemann solver and intensity vector splitting are studied and evaluated. Staggered and unstaggered Leapfrog and Runge-Kutta time integration methods are analysed in terms of phase and amplitude error to identify which method is the most accurate and efficient for simulating microwave heating processes. The implementation and migration of typical electromagnetic boundary conditions. from staggered in space to cell-centred approaches also is deliberated. In particular, an existing perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary methodology is adapted to formulate a new cell-centred boundary implementation for the ccFV-TD solvers. Finally for microwave heating purposes, a comparison of analytical and numerical results for standard case studies in rectangular waveguides allows the accuracy of the developed methods to be assessed. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. Let G be a graph that admits a perfect matching. A forcing set for a perfect matching M of G is a subset S of M, such that S is contained in no other perfect matching of G. This notion has arisen in the study of finding resonance structures of a given molecule in chemistry. Similar concepts have been studied for block designs and graph colorings under the name defining set, and for Latin squares under the name critical set. There is some study of forcing sets of hexagonal systems in the context of chemistry, but only a few other classes of graphs have been considered. For the hypercubes Q(n), it turns out to be a very interesting notion which includes many challenging problems. In this paper we study the computational complexity of finding the forcing number of graphs, and we give some results on the possible values of forcing number for different matchings of the hypercube Q(n). Also we show an application to critical sets in back circulant Latin rectangles. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Using a Radial Guide Field Matching Method, an investigation is performed into reducing the height of an electronically steered circular array of monopole antennas composed of a central active element surrounded by passive elements being either short- or open-circuited. It is shown that a considerable height reduction can be achieved using top hats attached to monopoles ends and by applying dielectric coating underneath the top hats. The trade-off in achieving height reduction is narrower impedance bandwidth.

Cerebral electrical impedance is useful for the detection of cerebral edema following hypoxia in newborn infants. Thus it may be useful for determining neurological outcome or monitoring treatment. Hypothermia is a promising new therapy currently undergoing trials, but will alter impedance measurements. This study aimed to define the relationship between temperature and both cerebral and whole body electrical impedance, and to derive correction factors for adjustment of impedance measurements during hypothermia. In eight anaesthetized 1-2 day old piglets rectal, tympanic and scalp temperatures were monitored continuously. Following baseline readings at a rectal temperature of 39degreesC, piglets were cooled to 32degreesC. Four piglets were re-warmed. Cerebral and whole body impedance were measured at each 0.5degreesC as rectal temperature decreased. There was a strong linear relationship between both cerebral and whole body impedance and each of the temperatures measured. There was no difference in the relationship between impedance and rectal, tympanic or scalp temperatures. The relationship for impedance and rectal temperature was the same during cooling and re-warming. Using the correction factors derived it will be possible to accurately monitor cerebral and whole body fluid distribution during hypothermic treatment.

We consider plane waves propagating in quadratic nonlinear slab waveguides with nonlinear quasi-phase-matching gratings. We predict analytically and verify numerically the complete gain spectrum for transverse modulational instability, including hitherto undescribed higher-order gain bands. We present the results of applying automated machine learning techniques to the problem of matching different object catalogues in astrophysics. In this study, we take two partially matched catalogues where one of the two catalogues has a large positional uncertainty. The two catalogues we used here were taken from the H I Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) and SuperCOSMOS optical survey. Previous work had matched 44 per cent (1887 objects) of HIPASS to the SuperCOSMOS catalogue. A supervised learning algorithm was then applied to construct a model of the matched portion of our catalogue. Validation of the model shows that we achieved a good classification performance (99.12 per cent correct). Applying this model to the unmatched portion of the catalogue found 1209 new matches. This increases the catalogue size from 1887 matched objects to 3096. The combination of these procedures yields a catalogue that is 72 per cent matched.
