A binucleating potentially hexadentate chelating agent containing oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur as potential donor atoms (H2ONNO) has been synthesized by condensing alpha,alpha-xylenebis(N-methyldithiocarbazate) with 2,4-pentanedione. An X-ray crystallographic structure determination shows that the Schiff base remains in its ketoimine tautomeric form with the protons attached to the imine nitrogen atoms. The reaction of the Schiff base with nickel(II) acetate in a 1:1 stoichiometry leads to the formation of a dinuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni(ONNO)](2) (ONNO2- = dianionic form of the Schiff base) containing N,O-chelated tetradentate ligands, the sulfur donors remaining uncoordinated. A single crystal X-ray structure determination of this dimer reveals that each ligand binds two low spin nickel(II) ions, bridged by a xylyl group. The nickel(II) atoms adopt a distorted square-planar geometry in a trans-N2O2 donor environment. Reaction of the Schiff base with nickel(II) acetate in the presence of excess pyridine leads to the formation of a similar dinuclear complex, [Ni(ONNO)(py)](2), but in this case comprises five coordinate high-spin Ni(II) ions with pyridine ligands occupying the axial coordination sites as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Within the ballistic transport picture, we have investigated the spin-polarized transport properties of a ferromagnetic metal/two-dimensional semiconductor (FM/SM) hybrid junction and an FM/FM/SM structure using quantum tunnelling theory. Our calculations indicate explicitly that the low spin injection efficiency (SIE) from an FM into an SM, compared with a ferromagnet/normal metal junction, originates from the mismatch of electron densities in the FM and SM. To enhance the SIE from an FM into an SM, we introduce another FM film between them to form FM/FM/SM double tunnel junctions, in which the quantum interference effect will lead to the current polarization exhibiting periodically oscillating behaviour, with a variation according to the thickness of the middle FM film and/or its exchange energy strength. Our results show that, for some suitable values of these parameters, the SIE can reach a very high level, which can also be affected by the electron density in the SM electrode.

We investigate the emission of multimodal polarized light from light emitting devices due to spin-aligned carrier injection. The results are derived through operator Langevin equations, which include thermal and carrier-injection fluctuations, as well as nonradiative recombination and electronic g-factor temperature dependence. We study the dynamics of the optoelectronic processes and show how the temperature-dependent g factor and magnetic field affect the degree of polarization of the emitted light. In addition, at high temperatures, thermal fluctuation reduces the efficiency of the optoelectronic detection method for measuring the degree of spin polarization of carrier injection into nonmagnetic semicondutors.

We use series expansion methods to calculate the dispersion relation of the one-magnon excitations for the spin-(1)/(2) triangular-lattice nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet above a three-sublattice ordered ground state. Several striking features are observed compared to the classical (large-S) spin-wave spectra. Whereas, at low energies the dispersion is only weakly renormalized by quantum fluctuations, significant anomalies are observed at high energies. In particular, we find rotonlike minima at special wave vectors and strong downward renormalization in large parts of the Brillouin zone, leading to very flat or dispersionless modes. We present detailed comparison of our calculated excitation energies in the Brillouin zone with the spin-wave dispersion to order 1/S calculated recently by Starykh, Chubukov, and Abanov [Phys. Rev. B74, 180403(R) (2006)]. We find many common features but also some quantitative and qualitative differences. We show that at temperatures as low as 0.1J the thermally excited rotons make a significant contribution to the entropy. Consequently, unlike for the square lattice model, a nonlinear sigma model description of the finite-temperature properties is only applicable at temperatures < 0.1J. Finally, we review recent NMR measurements on the organic compound kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3). We argue that these are inconsistent with long-range order and a description of the low-energy excitations in terms of interacting magnons, and that therefore a Heisenberg model with only nearest-neighbor exchange does not offer an adequate description of this material.

The capability of cricket batsmen of different skill levels to pick-up information from the pre-release movement pattern of the bowler, from pre-bounce ball flight, and from post-bounce ball flight was examined experimentally. Six highly skilled and six low-skilled cricket batsmen batted against three different leg-spin bowlers while wearing liquid crystal spectacles. The spectacles permitted the specific information available to the batsmen on each trial to be manipulated such that vision was either: (i) occluded at a point prior to the point of ball release (thereby only allowing vision of advance information from the bowler's delivery action); (ii) occluded at a point prior to the point of bat[ bounce (thereby permitting the additional vision of pre-bounce ball flight); or (iii) not occluded (thereby permitting the additional vision of post-bounce bat[ flight information). Measurement was made on each trial of both the accuracy of the definitive (forward-backward) foot movements made by the batsmen and their success (or otherwise) in making bat-bat[ contact. The analyses revealed a superior capability of the more skilled players to make use of earlier (pre-bounce) bat[ flight information to guide successful bat-bat[ interception, thus mirroring the greater use of prospective information pick-up by skilled performers observed in other aspects of batting and in other time-constrained performance domains.
