Quantile computation has many applications including data mining and financial data analysis. It has been shown that an is an element of-approximate summary can be maintained so that, given a quantile query d (phi, is an element of), the data item at rank [phi N] may be approximately obtained within the rank error precision is an element of N over all N data items in a data stream or in a sliding window. However, scalable online processing of massive continuous quantile queries with different phi and is an element of poses a new challenge because the summary is continuously updated with new arrivals of data items. In this paper, first we aim to dramatically reduce the number of distinct query results by grouping a set of different queries into a cluster so that they can be processed virtually as a single query while the precision requirements from users can be retained. Second, we aim to minimize the total query processing costs. Efficient algorithms are developed to minimize the total number of times for reprocessing clusters and to produce the minimum number of clusters, respectively. The techniques are extended to maintain near-optimal clustering when queries are registered and removed in an arbitrary fashion against whole data streams or sliding windows. In addition to theoretical analysis, our performance study indicates that the proposed techniques are indeed scalable with respect to the number of input queries as well as the number of items and the item arrival rate in a data stream.

The dynamics of drop formation and pinch-off have been investigated for a series of low viscosity elastic fluids possessing similar shear viscosities, but differing substantially in elastic properties. On initial approach to the pinch region, the viscoelastic fluids all exhibit the same global necking behavior that is observed for a Newtonian fluid of equivalent shear viscosity. For these low viscosity dilute polymer solutions, inertial and capillary forces form the dominant balance in this potential flow regime, with the viscous force being negligible. The approach to the pinch point, which corresponds to the point of rupture for a Newtonian fluid, is extremely rapid in such solutions, with the sudden increase in curvature producing very large extension rates at this location. In this region the polymer molecules are significantly extended, causing a localized increase in the elastic stresses, which grow to balance the capillary pressure. This prevents the necked fluid from breaking off, as would occur in the equivalent Newtonian fluid. Alternatively, a cylindrical filament forms in which elastic stresses and capillary pressure balance, and the radius decreases exponentially with time. A (0+1)-dimensional finitely extensible nonlinear elastic dumbbell theory incorporating inertial, capillary, and elastic stresses is able to capture the basic features of the experimental observations. Before the critical "pinch time" t(p), an inertial-capillary balance leads to the expected 2/3-power scaling of the minimum radius with time: R-min similar to(t(p)-t)(2/3). However, the diverging deformation rate results in large molecular deformations and rapid crossover to an elastocapillary balance for times t>t(p). In this region, the filament radius decreases exponentially with time R-min similar to exp[(t(p)-t)/lambda(1)], where lambda(1) is the characteristic time constant of the polymer molecules. Measurements of the relaxation times of polyethylene oxide solutions of varying concentrations and molecular weights obtained from high speed imaging of the rate of change of filament radius are significantly higher than the relaxation times estimated from Rouse-Zimm theory, even though the solutions are within the dilute concentration region as determined using intrinsic viscosity measurements. The effective relaxation times exhibit the expected scaling with molecular weight but with an additional dependence on the concentration of the polymer in solution. This is consistent with the expectation that the polymer molecules are in fact highly extended during the approach to the pinch region (i.e., prior to the elastocapillary filament thinning regime) and subsequently as the filament is formed they are further extended by filament stretching at a constant rate until full extension of the polymer coil is achieved. In this highly extended state, intermolecular interactions become significant, producing relaxation times far above theoretical predictions for dilute polymer solutions under equilibrium conditions. The manufacture of a radio frequency filter box using high pressure die casting (HPDC) is compared to the traditional high speed machining route. This paper describes an industrial exercise that concluded HPDC to be an economical and appropriate method to produce larger volumes of thin-walled telecommunications components. Modifications to the component design were made to make the component suitable for the HPDC process. Development of the die design through simulation modelling is described. The wrought alloy was replaced by near-eutectic Al-Si die casting alloy that was found to give better temperature stability performance. Apart from the economic benefits, HPDC was found to give lower filter efficiency losses through better surface finish. The effects of HPDC process variables, such as intensification pressure and injection piston velocity, on component quality, particularly porosity levels, were investigated. The pressure was analysed in terms of HPDC machine set pressure and the pressure measured in the die cavity by pressure sensors. Porosity was found to decrease with increased pressure and slightly increase with higher casting velocities.

We have found the peculiar galaxy NGC 922 to be a new drop-through ring galaxy using multiwavelength (ultraviolet-radio) imaging and spectroscopic observations. Its 'C'-shaped morphology and tidal plume indicate a recent strong interaction with its companion which was identified with these observations. Using numerical simulations we demonstrate that the main properties of the system can be generated by a high-speed off-axis drop-through collision of a small galaxy with a larger disc system, thus making NGC 922 one of the nearest known collisional ring galaxies. While these systems are rare in the local Universe, recent deep Hubble Space Telescope images suggest they were more common in the early Universe.

The optimum bandwidth for shallow, high-resolution seismic reflection differs from that required for conventional petroleum reflection. An understanding of this issue is essential for correct choice of acquisition instrumentation. Numerical modelling of simple Bowen Basin coal structures illustrates that, for high-resolution imaging, it is important to accurately record all frequencies up to the limit imposed by earth scattering. On the contrary, the seismic image is much less dependent on frequencies at the lower end of the spectrum. These quantitative observations support the use of specialised high-frequency geophones for high-resolution seismic imaging. Synthetic seismic inversion trials demonstrate that, irrespective of the bandwidth of the seismic data, additional low-frequency impedance control is essential for accurate inversion. Inversion provides no compelling argument for the use of conventional petroleum geophones in the high-resolution arena.
