The effect of iron on liquid film migration and sintering of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy

Analytical transmission electron microscopy indicates that liquid film migration occurs during sintering of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy, that intragranular liquid pools develop from migrating films and that iron segregates to these pools. It is suggested that a high localised iron concentration retards the liquid film migration rate by reducing the coherency strain in the retreating grain, causing a region of the film to detach from the boundary, thus forming an intragranular pool in the advancing grain. On the role of tin in the infiltration of aluminium by aluminium for rapid prototyping applications

The use of tin as an alloying element in the production of freeformed infiltrated aluminium components is explored. Tin slows the growth of the aluminium nitride skeleton which provides dimensional stability, as well as increasing the rate of infiltration of the aluminium liquid into the aluminium nitride skeleton. Utility functions on locally connected spaces

We investigate the role of local connectedness in utility theory and prove that any continuous total preorder on a locally connected separable space is continuously representable. This is a new simple criterion for the representability of continuous preferences, and is not a consequence of the standard theorems in utility theory that use conditions such as connectedness and separability, second countability, or path-connectedness. Finally we give applications to problems involving the existence of value functions in population ethics and to the problem of proving the existence of continuous utility functions in general equilibrium models with land as one of the commodities. Differential effects on the hepatitis C virus (HCV) internal ribosome entry site by vitamin B-12 and the HCV core protein

To investigate the role of the hepatitis C virus internal ribosome entry site (HCV IRES) domain IV in translation initiation and regulation, two chimeric IRES elements were constructed to contain the reciprocal domain IV in the otherwise HCV and classical swine fever virus IRES elements. This permitted an examination of the role of domain IV in the control of HCV translation. A specific inhibitor of the HCV IRES, vitamin B-12 was shown to inhibit translation directed by all IRES elements which contained domain IV from the HCV and the GB virus B IRES elements, whereas the HCV core protein could only suppress translation from the wild-type HCV IRES. Thus, the mechanisms of translation inhibition by vitamin B-12 and the core protein differ, and they target different regions of the IRES.

On the role of tin in the nitridation of aluminium powder

The role of tin in the mechanism by which aluminium nitride grows on aluminium powder is explored. In the absence of tin, the aluminium powder nitrides rapidly, with growth occurring both into and out from the surface of the particles. In contrast, nitridation occurs more slowly in the presence of tin, which is incorporated in the growing nitride. When the tin is depleted, rapid nitridation occurs.
