The age structure and, stable isotope composition of a stalagmite (CC I) from an upland cave in central-western Italy were studied to investigate regional response to global climatic changes. Four growth phases are constrained by 28 thermal ionization and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry Th-U ages and reveal intermittent deposition through the period between Marine isotope Stage (MIS) 11 and 3 (similar to380 and similar to43 kyr). Most of the growth took place between similar to380 and similar to280 kyr, a period punctuated briefly by a hiatus in deposition through the glacial maximum of MIS 10. Growth was terminated abruptly at 280 kyr just prior to the MIS 8 glacial maximum. With a present-day chamber temperature of 7.5 degreesC, the timing of hiatuses close to these glacial maxima point to freezing conditions at the time. No deposition was recorded through the entirety of MIS 7 and most of MIS 6, whilst two minor growth phases occurred at similar to141-125 and similar to43 kyr. Growth at 141 kyr indicates temperatures >0 degreesC at a time when MIS 6 ice volumes were close to their maximum. High stable carbon isotope (delta(13)C) values (similar to2.8parts per thousand to +3.1parts per thousand) throughout the stalagmite's growth reflect a persistently low input of biogenic CO2, indicating that the steep, barren and alpine-like recharge area of today ha's been in existence for at least the last similar to380 kyr. During MIS 9, the lowest delta(13)C values occur well after maximum interglacial conditions, suggesting a lag in the development of post-glacial soils in this high-altitude karst. The stable oxygen isotope (delta(18)O) trends match the main structural features of the major climate proxy records (SPECMAP, Vostok and Devils Hole), suggesting that the delta(18)O of CC1 has responded to global-scale climate changes, whilst remarkable similarity exists between CC1 delta(18)O and regional sea-surface temperature reconstructions from North Atlantic core ODP980 and southwest Pacific marine core MD97-2120 through the most detailed part of the CC1 record, MIS 9-8. The results suggest that CC1 and other stalagmites from the cave have the potential to capture a long record of regional temperature trends, particularly in regards to the relative severity of Pleistocene glacial stages. Adsorption isotherms of methane and carbon dioxide on two kinds of Australian coals have been measured at three temperatures up to pressures of 20 MPa. The adsorption behavior is described by three isotherm equations: extended three-parameter, Langmuir, and Toth. Among these, the Toth equation is found to be the most suitable, yielding the most realistic values of pore volume of the coals and the adsorbed phase density. Also, the surface area of coals obtained from CO2 adsorption at 273 K is found to be the meaningful parameter which captures the CO2 adsorption capacity. A maximum in the excess amount adsorbed of each gas appears at a lower pressure with a decrease in temperature. For carbon dioxide, after the appearance of the maximum, an inflection point in the excess amount adsorbed is observed close to the critical density at each temperature, indicating that the decrease in the gas-phase density change with pressure influences the behavior of the excess amount adsorbed. In the context of CO2 sequestration, it is found that CO2 injection pressures of lower than 10 MPa may be desirable for the CH4 recovery process and CO2-holding capacity.

Adsorption of nitrogen, argon, methane, and carbon dioxide on activated carbon Norit R1 over a wide range of pressure (up to 50 MPa) at temperatures from 298 to 343 K (supercritical conditions) is analyzed by means of the density functional theory modified by incorporating the Bender equation of state, which describes the bulk phase properties with very high accuracy. It has allowed us to precisely describe the experimental data of carbon dioxide adsorption slightly above and below its critical temperatures. The pore size distribution (PSD) obtained with supercritical gases at ambient temperatures compares reasonably well with the PSD obtained with subcritical nitrogen at 77 K. Our approach does not require the skeletal density of activated carbon from helium adsorption measurements to calculate excess adsorption. Instead, this density is treated as a fitting parameter, and in all cases its values are found to fall into a very narrow range close to 2000 kg/m(3). It was shown that in the case of high-pressure adsorption of supercritical gases the PSD could be reliably obtained for the range of pore width between 0.6 and 3 run. All wider pores can be reliably characterized only in terms of surface area as their corresponding excess local isotherms are the same over a practical range of pressure.

Three high chromium white cast irons were examined in the as-cast state to determine the effect of the carbon content on the fracture toughness. The plane strain fracture toughness K-Ic and the fracture strength were measured for each alloy. X-ray mapping was used to identify the phases on the fracture surfaces. Scanning electron fractography and optical microscopy were used to determine the volume fraction of each phase on the fracture surfaces. It was found that most fracture occurred in the eutectic carbides, but that for the alloys with a reduced volume fraction of eutectic carbides, a small amount of crack propagation occurred in the austenitic dendrites. This change in crack path correlated with an increase in fracture toughness. The Ritchie-Knott-Rice model of brittle fracture was applied. It was found to sensibly predict the critical length for fracture for each alloy. Deep etching was employed to examine the distribution of eutectic carbides. It was found that the eutectic carbides formed a continuous network in each case. (C) 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

We present new simulation results for the packing of single-center and three-center models of carbon dioxide at high pressure in carbon slit pores. The former shows a series of packing transitions that are well described by our density functional theory model developed earlier. In contrast, these transitions are absent for the three-center model. Analysis of the simulation results shows that alternations of flat-lying molecules and rotated molecules can occur as the pore width is increased. The presence or absence of quadrupoles has negligible effect on these high-density structures.

Adsorption of different aromatic compounds (two of them are electrolytes) onto an untreated activated carbon (F100) is investigated. The experimental isotherms are fitted into Langmuir homogenous and heterogeneous Model. Theoretical maximum adsorption capacities that are based on the BET surface area of the adsorbent cannot be close to the real value. The affinity and the heterogeneity of the adsorption system observed to be related to the pK(a) of the solutes. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q(max)) of activated carbon for each solute dependent on the molecular area as well as the type of functional group attached on the aromatic compound and also pH of solution. The arrangement of the molecules on the carbon surface is not face down. Furthermore, it is illustrated that the packing arrangement is most likely edge to face (sorbate-sorbent) with various tilt angles. For characterization of the carbon, the N-2 and CO2 adsorption were used. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurement was used to surface elemental analysis of activated carbon.

The extent of swelling of cross-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane) and linear low-density poly(ethylene) in supercritical CO2 has been investigated using high-pressure NMR spectroscopy and microscopy. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) was cross-linked to four different cross-link densities and swollen in supercritical CO2. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, x, was found to be 0.62 at 300 bar and 45 degrees C, indicating that supercritical CO2 is a relatively poor solvent compared to toluene or benzene. Linear low-density poly(ethylene) was shown to exhibit negligible swelling upon exposure to supercritical CO2 up to 300 bar. The effect Of CO2 pressure on the amorphous region of the poly(ethylene) was investigated by observing changes in the H-1 T-2 relaxation times of the polymer. These relaxation times decreased with increasing pressure, which was attributed to a decrease in mobility of the polymer chains as a result of compressive pressure.

A platinum (Pt) on pure ceria (CeO2) supported by carbon black (CB) anode was synthesized using a combined process of precipitation and coimpregnation methods. The electrochemical activity of methanol oxidation reaction on synthesized Pt-CeO2/CB anodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry experimentation. To improve the anode property on Pt-CeO2/CB, the influence of particle morphology and particle size on anode properties was examined. The morphology and particle size of the pure CeO2 particles could be controlled by changing the preparation conditions. The anode properties (i.e., peak current density and onset potential for methanol oxidation) were improved by using nanosize CeO2 particles. This indicates that a larger surface area and higher activity on the surface of CeO2 improve the anode properties. The influence of particle morphology of CeO2 on anode properties was not very large. The onset potential for methanol oxidation reaction on Pt-CeO2/CB, which consisted of CeO2 with a high surface area, was shifted to a lower potential compared with that on the anodes, which consisted of CeO2 with a low surface area. The onset potential on Pt-CeO2/CB at 60 degrees C became similar to that on the commercially available Pt-Ru/carbon anode. We suggest that the rate-determining steps of the methanol oxidation reaction on Pt-CeO2/CB and commercially available Pt-Ru/carbon anodes are different, which accounts for the difference in performance. In the reaction mechanism on Pt-CeO2/CB, we conclude that the released oxygen species from the surface of CeO2 particles contribute to oxidation of adsorbed CO species on the Pt surface. This suggests that the anode performance of the Pt-CeO2/CB anode would lead to improvements in the operation of direct methanol fuel cells at 80 degrees C by the enhancement of diffusion of oxygen species created from the surface of nanosized CeO2 particles. Therefore, we conclude that fabrication of nanosized CeO2 with a high surface area is a key factor for development of a high-quality Pt-CeO2/CB anode in direct methanol fuel cells.

Photosynthesis of zooxanthellate stony corals may be limited by inorganic carbon at high irradiances. We demonstrated that oxygen consumption of expanded corals is higher than that of contracted corals in both night-expanding and day-expanding corals. It is assumed that at the single-polyp level, the expansion of tentacles increases the surface area for solute exchange with the surrounding water, which may alleviate potential carbon limitation and excess oxygen levels in the tissue under high irradiance. We investigated this hypothesis using stable carbon isotope (613 C) analysis of coral species from the Red Sea exhibiting different morphologies. delta C-13 ratios in zooxanthellae of branched coral colonies with small polyp size that extend their tentacles during daytime (diurnal morphs) showed lower delta C-13 values in their zooxanthellae - 13.83 +/- 1.45 parts per thousand, compared to corals from the same depth with large polyps, which are usually massive and expand their tentacles only at night (nocturnal morphs). Their algae delta C-13 was significantly higher, averaging - 11.33 +/- 0.59 parts per thousand. Carbon isotope budget of the coral tissue suggests that branched corals are more autotrophic, i.e., that they depend on their symbionts for nutrition compared to massive species, which are more heterotrophic and depend on plankton predation. The adsorption of Lennard-Jones fluids (argon and nitrogen) onto a graphitized thermal carbon black surface was studied with a Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulation (GCMC). The surface was assumed to be finite in length and composed of three graphene layers. When the GCMC simulation was used to describe adsorption on a graphite surface, an over-prediction of the isotherm was consistently observed in the pressure regions where the first and second layers are formed. To remove this over-prediction, surface mediation was accounted for to reduce the fluid-fluid interaction. Do and co-workers have introduced the so-called surface-mediation damping factor to correct the over-prediction for the case of a graphite surface of infinite extent, and this approach has yielded a good description of the adsorption isotherm. In this paper, the effects of the finite size of the graphene layer on the adsorption isotherm and how these would affect the extent of the surface mediation were studied. It was found that this finite-surface model provides a better description of the experimental data for graphitized thermal carbon black of high surface area (i.e. small crystallite size) while the infinite- surface model describes data for carbon black of very low surface area (i.e. large crystallite size).

NMR spectroscopy and relaxometry were used to investigate microemulsion formation in supercritical CO2. The droplets were stabilised by the salt of a perfluorinated polyether. Spontaneous microemulsion formation was observed over a period of 5 h in the absence of applied sheer. Time-resolved relaxation times of the surfactant tail showed a stepwise increase in mobility of the tail over this period. Conversely, the translational mobility of water confined within the droplet decreased over the same interval. This data is consistent with the gradual decrease in droplet size as time progressed. Indeed, NMR self-diffusion coefficients were used to show that droplets with a radius of approximately 5 nm were formed at equilibrium.

Promoted-ignition testing on carbon steel rods of varying cross-sectional area and shape was performed in high pressure oxygen to assess the effect of sample geometry on the regression rate of the melting interface. Cylindrical and rectangular geometries and three different cross sections were tested and the regression rates of the cylinders were compared to the regression rates of the rectangular samples at test pressures around 6.9 MPa. Tests were recorded and video analysis used to determine the regression rate of the melting interface by a new method based on a drop cycle which was found to provide a good basis for statistical analysis and provide excellent agreement to the standard averaging methods used. Both geometries tested showed the typical trend of decreasing regression rate of the melting interface with increasing cross-sectional area; however, it was shown that the effect of geometry is more significant as the sample's cross sections become larger. Discussion is provided regarding the use of 3.2-mm square rods rather than 3.2-mm cylindrical rods within the standard ASTM test and any effect this may have on the observed regression rate of the melting interface.
