The effect of an organically surface modified layered silicate on the viscosity of various epoxy resins of different structures and different functionalities was investigated. Steady and dynamic shear viscosities of the epoxy resins containing 0-10 wt% of the organoclay were determined using parallel plate rheology. Viscosity results were compared with those achieved through addition of a commonly used micron-sized CaCO3 filler. It was found that changes in viscosities due to the different fillers were of the same order, since the layered silicate was only dispersed on a micron-sized scale in the monomer (prior to reaction), as indicated by X-ray diffraction measurements. Flow activation energies at a low frequency were determined and did not show any significant changes due to the addition of organoclay or CaCO3. Comparison between dynamic and steady shear experiments showed good agreement for low layered silicate concentrations below 7.5 wt%, i.e. the Cox-Merz rule can be applied. Deviations from the Cox-Merz rule appeared at and above 10 wt%, although such deviations were only slightly above experimental error. Most resin organoclay blends were well predicted by the Power Law model, only concentrations of 10 wt% and above requiring the Herschel-Buckley (yield stress) model to achieve better fits. Wide-angle X-ray measurements have shown that the epoxy resin swells the layered silicate with an increase in the interlayer distance of approximately 15 Angstrom, and that the rheology behavior is due to the lateral, micron-size of these swollen tactoids.

The influence of an organically modified clay on the curing behavior of three epoxy systems widely used in the aerospace industry and of different structures and functionalities, was studied. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), triglycidyl p-amino phenol (TGAP) and tetraglycidyl diamino diphenylmethane (TGDDM) were mixed with an octadecyl ammonium ion modified organoclay and cured with diethyltoluene diamine (DETDA). The techniques of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), chemorheology and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were applied to investigate gelation and vitrification behavior, as well as catalytic effects of the clay on resin cure. While the formation of layered silicate nanocomposite based on the bifunctional DGEBA resin has been previously investigated to some extent, this paper represents the first detailed study of the cure behavior of different high performance, epoxy nanocomposite systems.

Poly(hydroxyether of phenolphthalein) (PPH) was synthesized through the polycondensation of phenolphthalein with epichlorohydrin. It was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The miscibility of the blends of PPH with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was established on the basis of the thermal analysis results. DSC showed that the PPH/PEO blends prepared via casting from N,N-dimethylformamide possessed single, composition-dependent glass-transition temperatures. Therefore, the blends were miscible in the amorphous state for all compositions. FTIR studies indicated that there were competitive hydrogen-bonding interactions with the addition of PEO to the system, which were involved with (OHO)-O-. . .=C

This work reports the first instance of self-organized thermoset blends containing diblock copolymers with a crystallizable thermoset-immiscible block. Nanostructured thermoset blends of bisphenol A-type epoxy resin (ER) and a low-molecular-weight (M-n = 1400) amphiphilic polyethylene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (EEO) symmetric diblock copolymer were prepared using 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) as curing agent and were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All the MDA-cured ER/EEO blends do not show macroscopic phase separation but exhibit microstructures. The ER selectively mixes with the epoxy-miscible PEO block in the EEO diblock copolymer whereas the crystallizable PE blocks that are immiscible with ER form separate microdomains at nanoscales in the blends. The PE crystals with size on nanoscales are formed and restricted within the individual spherical micelles in the nanostructured ER/EEO blends with EEO content up to 30 wt %. The spherical micelles are highly aggregated in the blends containing 40 and 50 wt % EEO. The PE dentritic crystallites exist in the blend containing 50 wt % EEO whereas the blends with even higher EEO content are completely volume-filled with PE spherulites. The semicrystalline microphase-separated lamellae in the symmetric EEO diblock copolymer are swollen in the blend with decreasing EEO content, followed by a structural transition to aggregated spherical micellar phase morphology and, eventually, spherical micellar phase morphology at the lowest EEO contents. Three morphological regimes are identified, corresponding precisely to the three regimes of crystallization kinetics of the PE blocks. The nanoscale confinement effect on the crystallization kinetics in nanostructured thermoset blends is revealed for the first time. This new phenomenon is explained on the basis of homogeneous nucleation controlled crystallization within nanoscale confined environments in the block copolymer/thermoset blends.

Polybenzoxazine (PBA-a)/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) blends were prepared by an in situ curing reaction of benzoxazine (BA-a) in the presence of PCL. Before curing, the benzoxazine (BA-a)/PCL blends are miscible, which was evidenced by the behaviors of single and composition-dependant glass transition temperature and equilibrium melting point depression. However, the phase separation induced by polymerization was observed after curing at elevated temperature. It was expected that after curing, the PBA-a/PCL blends would be miscible since the phenolic hydroxyls in the PBA-a molecular backbone have the potential to form inter- molecular hydrogen-bonding interactions with the carbonyls of PCL and thus would fulfil the miscibility of the blends. The resulting morphology of the blends prompted an investigation of the status of association between PBA-a and PCL under the curing conditions. Although Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed that there were intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between PBA-a and PCL at room temperature, especially for the PCL-rich blends, the results of variable temperature FT-IR spectroscopy by the model compound indicate that the phenolic hydroxyl groups could not form efficient intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions at elevated temperatures, i.e., the phenolic hydroxyl groups existed mainly in the non-associated form in the system during curing. The results are valuable to understand the effect of curing temperature on the resulting morphology of the thermosetting blends. The alkaloid content of Senecio madagascariensis collected from Australia and Hawaii was examined. Alkaloids were identified from the above ground whole plant (stems, leaves and flowers) by GUMS analysis and included: senecivernine, senecionine, integerrimine, senkirkine, mucronatinine, retrosine, usaramine, otosenine, acetylsenkirkine, desacetyldoronine, florosenine and doronine. Plant material collected from the Hawaiian Islands was found to be identical in pyrrolizidine alkaloid content to that from a single composite collection made from northern New South Wales, Australia. Overall, no appreciable differences in alkaloid content were found between locations, whereas variation among individual plants was evident. The average total pyrrolizidine alkaloid content varied from a low of 217 mu g/g to a high of 1990 mu g/g (dry weight basis) among the locations. Based on comparable alkaloid content and documented pyrrolizidine alkaloidosis cases from Australia, S. madagascariensis may pose a significant risk to livestock grazing heavily infested ranges on the Hawaiian Islands. A solution culture experiment was conducted to examine the effect of Cu toxicity on Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana), a pasture species used in mine site rehabilitation. The experiment used dilute, solution culture to achieve external nutrient concentrations which were representative of the soil solution, and ion exchange resins to maintain stable concentrations of Cu in solution. Copper toxicity was damaged plant roots, with symptoms ranging from disruption of the root cuticle and reduced root hair proliferation, to severe deformation of root structure. A reduction in root growth was observed at an external Cu concentration of
