Cross-linked homopolymers and copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, and ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate, MOEP, have been synthesized, and the diffusion of water into these systems has been investigated. Only polymers with 0-20 mot % MOEP exhibited ideal swelling behavior as extensive fracturing occurred in the systems with greater than 20 mot % MOEP as the polymers began to swell during water sorption. Gravimetric studies were used in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging of the diffusion front to elucidate the diffusion mechanism for these systems. In the case of the cross-linked HEMA homopolymer gets, the water transport mechanism was determined to be concentration-independent Fickian diffusion. However, as the fraction of MOEP in the network increased, the transport mechanism became increasingly exponentially concentration-dependent but remained Fickian until the polymer consisted of 30 mot % MOEP where the water transport could no longer been described by Fickian diffusion.

The PEG-Ficoll polymer phase system is one that has been overlooked in the past for biotechnology applications because of the stability of its emulsions. However, new applications, such as emulsion coating of cells, are appearing that rely on this very property. Ficoll is highly polydisperse and multimodal with three distinct Ficoll peaks in gel permeation chromatography. As a result, the transition between one-phase and two-phase systems is blurred and the binodials obtained through turbidometric titration and tie-line analysis differ significantly. Moreover, since the three Ficoll peaks partition differently, tie-line analysis cannot be described by a simple model of the aqueous two-phase system. A simple modification to the model allowed for excellent fit, and this modification may prove well-suited for the many practical cases where aqueous two-phase systems fail to display parallel tie-lines as implicitly assumed in the simpler model.

Corrosion of magnesium engine components by coolant is an important issue in the automotive industry where magnesium alloys may be used. It is of significance to understand the corrosion behaviour of pure magnesium in ethylene glycol solutions, as this can provide a basis for developing new coolants for magnesium alloy engine blocks. In this paper, through corrosion and electrochemical tests, it was found that the corrosion rate of magnesium decreased with increasing concentration of ethylene glycol. Individual contaminants, such as NaCl, NaHCO3, Na2SO4 and NaCl can make aqueous ethylene glycol solution more corrosive to magnesium. However, in NaCl contaminated ethylene glycol, NaHCO3 and Na2SO4 showed some inhibition effect. The solution resistivity played an important role in the corrosion of magnesium in ethylene glycol solutions, and the competitive adsorption of ethylene glycol and the contaminants on the magnesium surface was also responsible for the observed corrosion behaviours. The corrosion of magnesium in ethylene glycol can be effectively inhibited by addition of fluorides that react with magnesium and form a protective film on the surface. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Thermosetting blends of a biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)-type epoxy resin (PEG-ER) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared via an in situ curing reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) and maleic anhydride (MAH) in the presence of PCL. The miscibility, phase behavior, crystallization, and morphology of these blends were investigated. The uncured PCL/PEGDGE blends were miscible, mainly because of the entropic contribution, as the molecular weight of PEGDGE was very low. The crystallization and melting behavior of both PCL and the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segment of PEGDGE were less affected in the uncured PCL/PEGDGE blends because of the very close glass-transition temperatures of PCL and PEGDGE. However, the cured PCL/PEG-ER blends were immiscible and exhibited two separate glass transitions, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. There existed two phases in the cured PCL/PEG-ER blends, that is, a PCL-rich phase and a PEG-ER crosslinked phase composed of an MAH-cured PEGDGE network. The crystallization of PCL was slightly enhanced in the cured blends because of the phase-separated nature; meanwhile, the PEG segment was highly restricted in the crosslinked network and was noncrystallizable in the cured blends. The phase structure and morphology of the cured PCL/PEG-ER blends were examined with scanning electron microscopy; a variety of phase morphologies were observed that depended on the blend composition. The ingress of water into poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), PHEMA, loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin B-12 or aspirin, was studied at 37 degreesC using three-dimensional NMR imaging. PHEMA was loaded with 5 and 10 wt % of the drugs. From the imaging profiles, it was observed that incorporation of vitamin B-12 into PHEMA resulted in enhanced crack formation on sorption of water and the crack healing behind the diffusion front was slower than for PHEMA without added drug. This was accounted for by the anti-plasticization of PHEMA by vitamin B-12. Crack formation was inhibited in the P-HEMA-aspirin systems because of the plasticizing effect of the aspirin on the PHEMA matrix. All of the polymers were found to absorb water according to an underlying Fickian diffusion mechanism. For PHEMA loaded with 5 wt % of aspirin or vitamin B-12, the best values of the water diffusion coefficients were both found to be 1.3 +/- 0.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) at 37 degreesC, while the values for the polymer loaded with 10 wt % of the drugs were slightly higher, 1.5 +/- 0.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1).

The diffusion of water into cylinders of polyHEMA and copolymers of HEMA with THFMA, BMA and CHMA were studied over a range of copolymer compositions. The diffusion of water into the polymers was found to follow a Fickian, or case I mechanism. The diffusion coefficients of water were determined from mass measurements and NMR imaging studies. They were found to vary from 1.7 +/- 0.2 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for polyHEMA at 37 degreesC to lower values for the copolymers. The mass of water absorbed at equilibrium relative to the mass of dry polymer varied from 52-58 wt% for polyHEMA to lower values for the copolymers.

The RAFT-CLD-T methodology is demonstrated to be not only applicable to 1-substituted monomers such as styrene and acrylates, but also to 1,1-disubstituted monomers such as MMA. The chain length of the terminating macromolecules is controlled by CPDB in MMA bulk free radical polymerization at 80 degrees C. The evolution of the chain length dependent termination rate coefficient, k(t)(i,i), was constructed in a step-wise fashion, since the MMA/CPDB system displays hybrid behavior (between conventional and living free radical polymerization) resulting in initial high molecular weight polymers formed at low RAFT agent concentrations. The obtained CLD of k(t) in MMA polymerizations is compatible with the composite model for chain length dependent termination. For the initial chain-length regime, up to a degree of polymerization of 100, k(t) decreases with alpha (in the expression k(t)(i,i) = k(t)(0) . i(-alpha)) being close to 0.65 at 80 degrees C. At chain lengths exceeding 100, the decrease is less pronounced (affording an alpha of 0.15 at 80 degrees C). However, the data are best represented by a continuously decreasing nonlinear functionality implying a chain length dependent alpha.

The ingress of water and Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) into poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), and its co-polymers with tetrahydrofurduryl methacrylate (THFMA), loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin 1312 or aspirin, was studied by mass uptake over the temperature range 298-318 K. The polymers were studied as cylinders and were loaded with either 5 wt% or 10 wt% of the drugs. From DSC studies it was observed that vitamin B-12 behaved as a physical cross-linker restricting chain segmental mobility, and so had a small anti-plasticisation effect on PHEMA and the co-polymers rich in HEMA, but almost no effect on the T-g of co-polymers rich in THFMA. On the other hand, aspirin exhibited a plasticising effect on PHEMA and the copolymers. All of the polymers were found to absorb water and SBF according to a Fickian diffusion mechanism. The polymers were all found to swell to a greater extent in SBF than in water, which was attributed to the presence of Tris buffer in the SBF. The sorptions of the two penetrants were found to follow Fickian kinetics in all cases and the diffusion coefficients at 310 K for SBF were found to be smaller than those for water, except for the polymers containing aspirin where the diffusion coefficients were higher than for the other systems. For example, for sorption into PHEMA the diffusion coefficient for water was 1.41 X 10(-11) m(2)/s and for SBF was 0.79 x 10-11 m(2)/s, but in the presence of 5 wt% aspirin the corresponding values were 1.27 x 10(-1)1 m(2)/s and 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively. The corresponding values for PHEMA loaded with 5 wt% B-12 were 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s and 0.74 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively.

The ingress of water into copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (THFMA) loaded with either one of two model drugs, ie vitamin B-12 or aspirin, was studied at 310 K using three-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (3D NMR) imaging. The poly(HEMA) was loaded with 5 wt% of the drugs. From the imaging profiles it was observed that incorporation of vitamin B-12 into the polymers rich in HEMA resulted in crack formation at the interface between the rubbery region and the glassy core on sorption of water, although these cracks were 'healed' behind the diffusion front. However, for the copolymers with low HEMA contents and for those containing aspirin, no evidence for similar crack formation was found. For the copolymers loaded with 5 wt% of aspirin or vitamin B-12 the values of the water diffusion coefficients, determined by curve-fitting the relative water concentration profiles from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements, were found to be smaller than those obtained from a mass uptake study. We herein report the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid poly(methyl methacrylate) containing 1 polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes. Octakis(3-hydroxypropyldimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxane (OHPS) was synthesized from octakis(hydridodimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxane [Si8O12(OSiMe2H)(8), Q(8)M(8)(H)] following literature procedures. Octakis(tnethacryloxypropyldimethylsiloxy) octasilsesquioxane (OMPS) was synthesized via the reaction of methacryloyl chloride or methacrylic acid anhydride with OHPS, with the latter giving improved purity. Polymerization of OMPS with methyl inethacrylate using a dibenzoylperoxide initiator gave a highly cross-linked polymer. Characterization of the polymer was performed using Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, Si-29 NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The polymer was found to be largely homogeneous. Increasing the OMPS concentration in the polymer gave increased decomposition and glass transition temperatures.

PFG-NMR was used to study the chemical exchange of linear PHEMA having a range of molecular weights with water in DMSO containing varying quantities of water. The aim was to investigate the use of PFG-NMR to study chemical exchange between a polymer with exchangeable protons and a small fast diffusing molecule to provide insight into the conformation adopted by a polymer in solution. The experimental data were simulated closely for the two-site exchange case using the Bloch equations modified for chemical exchange and diffusion. The exchange rate could be used to detect changes in polymer conformation resulting from changes in the solvent. PHEMA of MW 10 000 showed significant time-dependent changes in exchange rate, resulting from preferential solvation of the OH sites by water, and subsequent conformational changes which altered accessibility of the OH sites to water. This behavior was not observed for larger MW PHEMA, which adopted a stable conformation immediately. Large changes in the exchange rate were not reflected in changes to the hydrodynamic radius, suggesting that a minimal overall change in the chain dimensions occurred. DMSO was found to be a poor solvent for PHEMA, which adopts a compact conformation in DMSO. This work has demonstrated that PFG-NMR is a sensitive method for detecting subtle changes in polymer conformation in polymers with exchangeable protons.

Soluble linear (non-cross-linked) poly(monoacryloxyethyl phosphate) (PMAEP) and poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphate) (PMOEP) were successfully synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated polymerization and by keeping the molecular weight below 20 K. Above this molecular weight, insoluble (cross-linked) polymers were observed, postulated to be due to residual diene (cross-linkable) monomers formed during purification of the monomers, MOEP and MAEP. Block copolymers consisting of PMAEP or PMOEP and poly(2-(acetoacetoxy) ethyl methacrylate) (PAAEMA) were successfully prepared and were immobilized on aminated slides. Simulated body fluid studies revealed that calcium phosphate (CaP) minerals formed on both the soluble polymers and the cross-linked gels were very similar. Both the PMAEP polymers and the PMOEP gel showed a CaP layer most probably brushite or monetite based on the Ca/P ratios. A secondary CaP mineral growth with a typical hydroxyapatite (HAP) globular morphology was found on the PMOEP gel. The soluble PMOEP film formed carbonated HAP according to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Block copolymers attached to aminated slides showed only patchy mineralization, possibly due to the ionic interaction of negatively charged phosphate groups and protonated amines.
