Small-angle neutron scattering measurements on a series of monodisperse linear entangled polystyrene melts in nonlinear flow through an abrupt 4:1 contraction have been made. Clear signatures of melt deformation and subsequent relaxation can be observed in the scattering patterns, which were taken along the centerline. These data are compared with the predictions of a recently derived molecular theory. Two levels of molecular theory are used: a detailed equation describing the evolution of molecular structure over all length scales relevant to the scattering data and a simplified version of the model, which is suitable for finite element computations. The velocity field for the complex melt flow is computed using the simplified model and scattering predictions are made by feeding these flow histories into the detailed model. The modeling quantitatively captures the full scattering intensity patterns over a broad range of data with independent variation of position within the contraction geometry, bulk flow rate and melt molecular weight. The study provides a strong, quantitative validation of current theoretical ideas concerning the microscopic dynamics of entangled polymers which builds upon existing comparisons with nonlinear mechanical stress data. Furthermore, we are able to confirm the appreciable length scale dependence of relaxation in polymer melts and highlight some wider implications of this phenomenon.

DEM modelling of the motion of coarse fractions of the charge inside SAG mills has now been well established for more than a decade. In these models the effect of slurry has broadly been ignored due to its complexity. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) provides a particle based method for modelling complex free surface fluid flows and is well suited to modelling fluid flow in mills. Previous modelling has demonstrated the powerful ability of SPH to capture dynamic fluid flow effects such as lifters crashing into slurry pools, fluid draining from lifters, flow through grates and pulp lifter discharge. However, all these examples were limited by the ability to model only the slurry in the mill without the charge. In this paper, we represent the charge as a dynamic porous media through which the SPH fluid is then able to flow. The porous media properties (specifically the spatial distribution of porosity and velocity) are predicted by time averaging the mill charge predicted using a large scale DEM model. This allows prediction of transient and steady state slurry distributions in the mill and allows its variation with operating parameters, slurry viscosity and slurry volume, to be explored. Simulations of a complete reflected shock tunnel facility have been performed with the aim of providing a better understanding of the flow through these facilities. In particular, the analysis is focused on the premature contamination of the test flow with the driver gas. The axisymmetric simulations model the full geometry of the shock tunnel and incorporate an iris-based model of the primary diaphragm rupture mechanics, an ideal secondary diaphragm and account for turbulence in the shock tube boundary layer with the Baldwin-Lomax eddy viscosity model. Two operating conditions were examined: one resulting in an over-tailored mode of operation and the other resulting in approximately tailored operation. The accuracy of the simulations is assessed through comparison with experimental measurements of static pressure, pitot pressure and stagnation temperature. It is shown that the widely-accepted driver gas contamination mechanism in which driver gas 'jets' along the walls through action of the bifurcated foot of the reflected shock, does not directly transport the driver gas to the nozzle at these conditions. Instead, driver gas laden vortices are generated by the bifurcated reflected shock. These vortices prevent jetting of the driver gas along the walls and convect driver gas away from the shock tube wall and downstream into the nozzle. Additional vorticity generated by the interaction of the reflected shock and the contact surface enhances the process in the over-tailored case. However, the basic mechanism appears to operate in a similar way for both the over-tailored and the approximately tailored conditions.

This paper describes effluent flow dynamics within a septic absorption system and the prediction of flow through the biomat and sub-biomat zone. Using soil hydraulic properties in a one dimensional model we demonstrate how soil hydraulic properties interact with biomat resistances to determine long-term acceptance rate (LTAR). The LTAR is a key parameter used in the Australian and New Zealand Standard AS1547:2000 to calculate the area of trench required to ensure trenches are not overloaded. Results show that several orders of magnitude variation in saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) collapse to a one order of magnitude variation in LTAR. These results are calculated from a model using basic flow theory, allowing LTAR to be estimated for any combination of biomat resistance and soil hydraulic properties. To increase the reliability of prediction of septic trench hydrology, HYDRUS 2D was used to model two dimensional flow. For more permeable soils, the exfiltration zone above sidewall biomat growth is shown to be a key pathway for excess effluent flow.

The verification of information flow properties of security devices is difficult because it involves the analysis of schematic diagrams, artwork, embedded software, etc. In addition, a typical security device has many modes, partial information flow, and needs to be fault tolerant. We propose a new approach to the verification of such devices based upon checking abstract information flow properties expressed as graphs. This approach has been implemented in software, and successfully used to find possible paths of information flow through security devices.

Approximately 15% of a population of the cryopelagic nototheniid fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki, found constantly swimming immediately beneath the annual fast ice, in McMudro Sound. Ross Sea, Antarctica, was affected by X-cell gill disease. This disease affected blood flow through the gill lamellae, and this in turn affected oxygen uptake. Exercise caused increases in heart rate and ventral aortic blood pressure. Heart rate increased from 15.1 +/- 1.55 to 23.1 +/- 0.93 beats min(-1) in healthy fish, with a similar increase from 15.1 +/- 1.55 to 23.1 +/- 0.93 beats min(-1) in healthy fish, with a similar increase (to 24.6 +/- 0.26 beats min(-1)) in X-cell-affected animals. In healthy fish, pressures rose with exercise (from 2.72 +/- 0.11 to 3.75 +/- 0.19 kPa) and then rapidly returned to resting levels during recovery. In X-cell fish pressures rose during exercise, but then continued to rise, to reach a high of 4.18 +/- 0.13 kPa, close to the predicted maximum pressure able to be generated by these hearts. Recovery was rapid in healthy fish, but was prolonged in diseased animals. As they are constantly swimming, there is the potential that X-cell-affected fish suffer from chronic hypertension. Histological sections of primary segmental arteries and associated interarterial anastomoses and secondary vessels from the long-finned eel Anguilla reinhardtii were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. Interarterial anastomoses were found to originate from the primary vasculature as depressions through the tunica intima and media, from where they ran perpendicularly to the adventitial layer, before coiling extensively. From here the anastomoses travelled a relatively linear path in the outer margin of the adventitia to anastomose with a secondary vessel running in parallel with the primary counterpart. In contrast to findings from other species, secondary vessels had a structure quite similar to that of primary vessels; they were lined by endothelial cells on a continuous basement membrane, with a single layer of smooth muscle cells surrounding the vessel. Smooth muscle cells were also found in the vicinity of interarterial anastomoses in the adventitia, but these appeared more longitudinally orientated. The presence of smooth muscle cells on all aspects of the secondary circulation suggests that this vascular system is regulated in a similar manner as the primary vascular system. Because interarterial anastomoses are structurally integrated with the primary vessel from which they originate, it is anticipated that flow through secondary vessels to some extent is affected by the vascular tone of the primary vessel. Immunohistochemical studies showed that primary segmental arteries displayed moderate immunoreactivity to antibodies against 5-hydroxytryptamine and substance P, while interarterial anastomoses and secondary vessels showed dense immunoreactivity. No immunoreactivity was observed on primary or secondary arteries against neuropeptide Y or calcitonin gene-related peptide.

Vermicompost filtration is a new on-site waste treatment system. Consequently, little is known about the filter medium properties. The aim of this preliminary study was to quantify physical and compositional properties of vermicompost filter beds that had been used to treat domestic solid organic waste and wastewater. This paper presents the trials performed on pilot-scale reactors filled with vermicompost from a full-scale vermicompost filtration system. Household solid organic waste and raw wastewater at the rate of 130 L/m(2)/d was applied to the reactor bed surface over a four-month period. It was found that fresh casts laid on the bed surface had a BOD of 1290 mg/g VS while casts buried to a depth of 10 cm had a BOD of 605 mg/g VS. Below this depth there was little further biodegradation of earthworm casts despite cast ages of up to five years. Solid material in the reactor accounted for only 7-10% of the reactor volume. The total voidage comprised of large free-draining pores, which accounted for 15-20% of the reactor volume and 60-70% micropores, able to hold up water against gravity. It was shown that water could flow through the medium micropores and macropores following a wastewater application. The wastewater flow characteristics were modeled by a two-region model based on the Richards Equation, an equation used to describe porous spatially heterogeneous materials.

High pressure homogenisation (HPH) is a novel dairy processing tool, which has many effects on enzymes, microbes, fat globules and proteins in milk. The effects of HPH on milk are due to a combination of shear forces and frictional heating of the milk during processing; the relative importance of these different factors is unclear, and was the focus of this study. The effect of milk inlet temperature (in the range 10-50 degrees C) on residual plasmin, alkaline phosphatase, lactoperoxidase and lipase activities in raw whole bovine milk homogenised at 200 MPa was investigated. HPH caused significant heating of the milk; outlet temperature increased in a linear fashion (0(.)5887 degrees C/degrees C, R-2 =0-9994) with increasing inlet temperature. As milk was held for 20 s at the final temperature before cooling, samples of the same milk were heated isothermally in glass capillary tubes for the same time/temperature combinations. Inactivation profiles of alkaline phosphatase in milk were similar for isothermal heating or HPH, indicating that loss of enzyme activity was due to heating alone. Loss of plasmin and lactoperoxidase activity in HPH milk, however, was greater than that in heated milk. Large differences in residual lipase activities in milks subjected to heating or HPH were observed due to the significant increase in lipase activity in homogenised milk. Denaturation of beta-lactoglobulin was more extensive following HPH than the equivalent heat treatment. Inactivation of plasmin was correlated with increasing fat/serum interfacial area but was not correlated with denaturation of beta-lactoglobulin. Thus, while some effects of HPH on milk are due to thermal effects alone, many are induced by the combination of forces and heating to which the milk is exposed during HPH.

The initial disturbance amplitude has an effect on stretching jets that is not observed for capillary jet instability where gravitational acceleration is not significant. For inviscid and viscous fluids, gravity diminishes the effect that the initial amplitude has on jet length and its ability to prevent satellite formation. In stretching jets, not only the dimensionless frequency of the disturbance but also its initial amplitude must be known to properly study their satellite forming nature. Indirect methods of relating the applied disturbance energy to an initial velocity perturbation are not simple when the gravity parameter G is changing. When G A 0, the optimum disturbance frequency Omega(opt) and the initial disturbance amplitude are related, with Omega(opt) proportional to f (G) x In(1 /epsilon(nu)). Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate how a droplet of Newtonian liquid. entrained in a higher viscosity Newtonian liquid, behaves when passing through an axisymmetric microfluidic contraction. Simulations are performed using a transient Volume of Fluid finite volume algorithm, and cover ranges of Reynolds and Weber numbers relevant to microfluidic flows. Results are presented for a droplet to surrounding fluid viscosity ratio of 0.001. In contrast to behaviour at higher viscosity ratios obtained previously by the authors, shear and interfacial tension driven instabilities often develop along the droplet Surface. leading to complex shape development, and in some instances, droplet breakup. Theoretical developments as well as field and laboratory data have shown the influence of the capillary fringe on water table fluctuations to increase with the fluctuation frequency. The numerical solution of a full, partially saturated flow equation can be computationally expensive. In this paper, the influence of the capillary fringe on water table fluctuations is simplified through its parameterisation into the storage coefficient of a fully-saturated groundwater flow model using the complex effective porosity concept [Nielsen, P., Perrochet, P., 2000. Water table dynamics under capillary fringes: experiments and modelling. Advances in Water Resources 23 (1), 503-515; Nielsen, P., Perrochet, P., 2000. ERRATA: water table dynamics under capillary fringes: experiments and modelling (Advances in Water Resources 23 (2000) 503-515). Advances in Water Resources 23, 907-908]. The model is applied to sand flume observations of periodic water table fluctuations induced by simple harmonic forcing across a sloping boundary, analogous to many beach groundwater systems. While not providing information on the moisture distribution within the aquifer, this approach can reasonably predict the water table fluctuations in response to periodic forcing across a sloping boundary. Furthermore, he coupled ground-surface water model accurately predicts the extent of the seepage face formed at the sloping boundary. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
