We review progress on laser cooling of solids. The general process that enables cooling to occur is based on anti-Stokes fluorescence. Candidate materials for laser cooling are discussed, including gases, dyes, crystals, semiconductors, and ionically doped glasses. Cooling processes and necessary conditions for cooling are outlined, and general thermodynamic limitations are discussed. This is followed by a more detailed discussion of one specific material, ytterbium-doped ZBLAN, with consideration given to optimization of the laser cooling process and applications. There is concern of the effects of Produced Formation Water (PFW, an effluent of the offshore oil and gas industry) on temperate/tropical marine organisms of the North West Shelf (NWS) of Australia. Little is known of the effects of PFW on tropical marine organisms, especially keystone species. Exposing the coral Plesiastrea versipora to a range (3-50% v/v) of PFW from Harriet A oil platform resulted in a reduction in photochemical efficiency of the symbiotic dinoflagellate algae in hospite ( in the coral tissues), assessed as a decrease in the ratio of variable fluorescence (F-v) to maximal fluorescence (F-m) measured using chlorophyll fluorescence techniques. Significant differences were noted at PFW concentrations >12.5% ( v/v). In corals where F-v/F-m was significantly lowered by PFW exposure, significant discolouration of the tissues occurred in a subsequent 4-day observation period. The discolouration ( coral bleaching) was caused by a loss of the symbiotic dinoflagellates from the tissues, a known sublethal stress response of corals. PFW caused a significant decrease in F-v/F-m in symbiotic dinoflagellates freshly isolated from the coral Heliofungia actiniformis at 6.25% PFW, slightly lower than the studies in hospite. Corals exposed to lower PFW concentrations (range 0.1%-10% PFW v/v) for longer periods (8 days) showed no decrease in F-v/F-m, discolouration, loss of symbiotic dinoflagellates or changes in gross photosynthesis or respiration ( measured using O-2 exchange techniques). The study demonstrates minor toxicity of PFW from Harriet A oil platform to corals and their symbiotic algae.

A novel phytotoxicity assay was incorporated into an environmental assessment of Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Straits, to investigate the role of run-off associated herbicides in the deteriorated health of intertidal seagrass meadows. Dose response curves of common herbicides were performed and their toxicity equivalents elucidated to assist in analysis. The results of the assay were reproducible and corresponded strongly with results of chemical analyses. The incorporation of the assay into the assessment of surface waters added an important aspect to the study by allowing investigation of the toxicity of cumulative herbicide concentrations and yielding biologically relevant data. The highest herbicide concentration detected during the study was equivalent to 0.23 mu g 1(-1) diuron; a concentration known to inhibit photosynthetic efficiency of the assay biomaterial by approximately 3%. This article demonstrates that a commonly-made assumption in quantum yield calculations may produce errors of up to 25% in extreme cases and can be corrected by a simple modification to the analysis.

A system of two two-level atoms interacting with a squeezed vacuum field can exhibit stationary entanglement associated with nonclassical two-photon correlations characteristic of the squeezed vacuum field. The amount of entanglement present in the system is quantified by the well known measure of entanglement called concurrence. We find analytical formulae describing the concurrence for two identical and nonidentical atoms and show that it is possible to obtain a large degree of steady-state entanglement in the system. Necessary conditions for the entanglement are nonclassical two-photon correlations and nonzero collective decay. It is shown that nonidentical atoms are a better source of stationary entanglement than identical atoms. We discuss the optimal physical conditions for creating entanglement in the system; in particular, it is shown that there is an optimal and rather small value of the mean photon number required for creating entanglement.

The emission from two photoactive 14-membered macrocyclic ligands, 6-((naphthalen-1-ylmethyl)-amino)trans-6,13-dimethyl- 13-amino- 1,4,8,11 -tetraaza-cyclotetradecane (L-1) and 6-((anthracen-9-ylmethyl)-amino)trans-6,13 -dimethyl - 13 -amino- 1,4,8, 1 1-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane (L-2) is strongly quenched by a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism involving amine lone pairs as electron donors. Time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC), multiplex transient grating (TG), and fluorescence upconversion (FU) measurements were performed to characterize this quenching mechanism. Upon complexation with the redox inactive metal ion, Zn(II), the emission of the ligands is dramatically altered, with a significant increase in the fluorescence quantum yields due to coordination-induced deactivation of the macrocyclic amine lone pair electron donors. For [ZnL2](2+), the substituted exocyclic amine nitrogen, which is not coordinated to the metal ion, does not quench the fluorescence due to an inductive effect of the proximal divalent metal ion that raises the ionization potential. However, for [ZnL1](2+), the naphthalene chromophore is a sufficiently strong excited-state oxidant for PET quenching to occur.

We show how to convert between partially coherent superpositions of a single photon with the vacuum by using linear optics and postselection based on homodyne measurements. We introduce a generalized quantum efficiency for such states and show that any conversion that decreases this quantity is possible. We also prove that our scheme is optimal by showing that no linear optical scheme with generalized conditional measurements, and with one single-rail qubit input, can improve the generalized efficiency. Spectroscopic studies of pheomelanin and its constituents have been sparse. These data present what is by far the most complete description of the fluorescence characteristics of synthetic pheomelanin. Emission spectra between 260 and 600 nm were acquired, for excitation wavelengths between 250 and 500 nm at 1-nm intervals. A quantum yield map is also presented, correcting the fluorescence intensities for differences in species concentration and molar absorptivity. These fluorescence features exhibit interesting similarities and differences to eumelanin, and these data are interpreted with respect to possible chemical structures. Overall, these data suggest that pheomelanin oligomers may be more tightly coupled than those of eumelanin. Finally, the quantum yield is shown to be on the order of 10(-4) and exhibit a complex dependence on excitation energy, varying by a factor of 4 across the energies employed here. Within the ballistic transport picture, we have investigated the spin-polarized transport properties of a ferromagnetic metal/two-dimensional semiconductor (FM/SM) hybrid junction and an FM/FM/SM structure using quantum tunnelling theory. Our calculations indicate explicitly that the low spin injection efficiency (SIE) from an FM into an SM, compared with a ferromagnet/normal metal junction, originates from the mismatch of electron densities in the FM and SM. To enhance the SIE from an FM into an SM, we introduce another FM film between them to form FM/FM/SM double tunnel junctions, in which the quantum interference effect will lead to the current polarization exhibiting periodically oscillating behaviour, with a variation according to the thickness of the middle FM film and/or its exchange energy strength. Our results show that, for some suitable values of these parameters, the SIE can reach a very high level, which can also be affected by the electron density in the SM electrode.

We consider the effect of quantum interference on population distribution and photon statistics of a cavity field interacting with dressed states of a strongly driven three-level atom. We analyse three coupling configurations of the cavity field to the driven atom, with the cavity frequency tuned to the outer Rabi sideband, the inner Rabi sideband and the central frequency of the 'singly dressed' three-level atom. The quantum doubly dressed states for each configuration are identified and the population distribution and photon statistics are interpreted in terms of transitions among these dressed states and their populations. We find that the population distribution depends strongly on quantum interference and the cavity damping. For the cavity field tuned to the outer or inner Rabi sidebands the cavity damping induces transitions between the dressed states which are forbidden for the ordinary spontaneous emission. Moreover, we find that in the case of the cavity field coupled to the inner Rabi sideband the population distribution is almost Poissonian with a large average number of photons that can be controlled by quantum interference. This system can be considered as a one-atom dressed-state laser with controlled intensity.

Bound and resonance states of HO2 have been calculated by both the complex Lanczos homogeneous filter diagonalisation (LHFD) method(1,2) and the real Chebyshev filter diagonalisation method(3,4) for non-zero total angular momentum J = 4 and 5. For bound states, the agreement between the two methods is quite satisfactory; for resonances while the energies are in good agreement, the widths are only in general agreement. The relative performances of the two iterative FD methods have also been discussed in terms of efficiency as well as convergence behaviour for such a computationally challenging problem. A helicity quantum number Ohm assignment (within the helicity conserving approximation) is performed and the results indicate that Coriolis coupling becomes more important as J increases and the helicity conserving approximation is not a good one for the HO2 resonance states.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed to analyze the nitrifying microbial communities in an activated sludge reactor (ASR) and a fixed biofilm reactor (FBR) for piggery wastewater treatment. Heterotrophic oxidation and nitrification were occurring simultaneously in the ASR and the COD and nitrification efficiencies depend on the loads. In the FBR nitrification efficiency also depends on ammonium load to the reactor and nitrite was accumulated when free ammonia concentration was higher than 0.2 mg NH3-N/L. FISH analysis showed that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (NSO1225) and denitrifying bacteria (RRP1088) were less abundant than other bacteria (EUB338) in ASR. Further analysis on nitrifying bacteria in the FBR showed that Nitrosomonas species (NSM156) and Nitrospira species (NSR1156) were the dominant ammonia-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, respectively, in the piggery wastewater nitrification system.

A comparison has been made between the spectroscopic properties of the laser dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) in mesostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) and in ethanol. Steady-state excitation and emission techniques have been used to probe the dye-matrix interactions. We show that the TiO2-nanocomposite studied is a good host for R6G, as it allows high dye concentrations, while keeping dye molecules isolated, and preventing aggregation. Our findings have important implications in the context of solid state dye-lasers and microphotonic device applications. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We consider a three-level V-type atomic system with the ground state coupled by a laser field to only one of the excited states, and with the two excited states coupled together by a dc field. Although the dipole moments of the two dipole-allowed transitions are assumed perpendicular, we demonstrate that this system emulates to a large degree a three-level system with parallel dipole moments-the latter being a system that exhibits quantum interference and displays a number of interesting features. As examples, we show that the system can produce extremely large values for the intensity-intensity correlation function, and that its resonance fluorescence spectrum can display ultranarrow lines. The dressed states for this system are identified, and the spectral features are interpreted in terms of transitions among these dressed states. We also show that this system is capable of exhibiting considerable squeezing.

Explants of the hard coral Seriatopora hystrix were exposed to sublethal concentrations of the herbicide diuron DCMU (N'-(3,4-dichlorophenyl,-N,N-dimethylurea)) and the heavy metal copper. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence techniques were used to assess the effects on the photosynthetic efficiency of the algal symbionts in the tissue (in Symbio), and chlorophyll fluorescence and counts of symbiotic algae (normalised to surface area) were used to assess the extent of coral bleaching. At 30 mug DCMU l(-1), there was a reduction in both the maximum effective quantum yield (DeltaF/F-m') and maximum potential quantum yield (F-v/F-m) of the algal symbionts in symbio. Corals subsequently lost their algal symbionts and discoloured (bleached), especially on their upper sunlight-exposed surfaces. At the same DCMU concentration but under low light (5% of growth irradiance), there was a marked reduction in DeltaF/F-m' but only a slight reduction in F-v/F-m and slight loss of algae. Loss of algal symbionts was also noted after a 7 d exposure to concentrations as low as 10 mug DCMU l(-1) under normal growth irradiance, and after 14 d exposure to 10 mug DCMU l(-1) under reduced irradiance. Collectively the results indicate that DCMU-induced bleaching is caused by a light-dependent photoinactivation of algal symbionts, and that bleaching occurs when F-v/F-n, (measured 2 h after sunset) is reduced to a value of less than or equal to 0.6. Elevated copper concentrations (60 mug Cu l(-1) for 10 h) also induced a rapid bleaching in S. hystrix but without affecting the quantum yield of the algae in symbio. Tests with isolated algae indicated that substantially higher concentrations (300 mug Cu l(-1) for 8 h) were needed to significantly reduce the quantum yield. Thus, copper-induced bleaching occurs without affecting the algal photosynthesis and may be related to effects on the host (animal). It is argued that warm-water bleaching of corals resembles both types of chemically induced bleaching, suggesting the need for an integrated model of coral bleaching involving the effect of temperature on both host (coral) and algal symbionts.
