Symbiotic Aiptasia pulchella and freshly isolated zooxanthellae were incubated in (NaHCO3)-C-14 and NH4Cl for 1 to 240 min, and samples were analysed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and an online radiochemical detector. NH4+ was first assimilated into C-14-glutamate and C-14-glutamine in the zooxanthellae residing in A. pulchella. The specific activities (dpm nmol(-1)) of C-14-glutamate and C-14-glutamine in vivo, were far greater in the zooxanthellae than in the host tissue, indicating that NH4+ was principally incorporated into the glutamate and glutamine pools of the zooxanthellae. C-14-alpha-ketoglutarate was taken up from the medium by intact A. pulchella and assimilated into a small amount of C-14-glutamate in the host tissue, but no C-14-glutamine was detected in the host fraction. The C-14-glutamate that was synthesized was most likely produced from transamination reactions as opposed to the direct assimilation of NH4+. The free aminoacid composition of the host tissue and zooxanthellae of A. pulchella was also measured. The results presented here demonstrate that NH4+ was initially assimilated by the zooxanthellae of A. pulchella.

We describe the classical two-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of cold atoms in far-off-resonant donut beams. We show that chaotic dynamics exists there for charge greater than unity, when the intensity of the beam is periodically modulated. The two-dimensional distributions of atoms in the (x,y) plant for charge 2 are simulated. We show that the atoms will accumulate on several ring regions when the system enters a regime of global chaos. [S1063-651X(99)03903-3].

The encounter of East and West has initiated a period of reforms in Muslim societies. Some of the legal reforms enacted by premodern and modem Muslim states have been hailed as victories for women's rights in Islam. A historical and comparative perspective on the issue reveals that this is far from being true. Reforms constitute a far more complex issue. In many Muslim countries, Islamic law remained the main reference in matters pertaining to family and personal laws. To this day, women's rights remain a sensitive issue. A look at some modem Muslim legislations regarding divorce and polygamy illustrates both the tension that exists between the duties of modem states to uphold women's rights and their alleged Islamic principles and the tension that exists between state and religion. Paradoxically, recent developments in Iran illustrate aptly that some sort of reforms of family laws may be envisioned within the strictures of an Islamic society where Islamic law rules. We present the quantum theory of the far-off-resonance continuous-wave Raman laser using the Heisenberg-Langevin approach. We show that the simplified quantum Langevin equations for this system are mathematically identical to those of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the time domain with the following associations: pump pump, Stokes signal, and Raman coherence idler. We derive analytical results for both the steady-state behavior and the time-dependent noise spectra, using standard linearization procedures. In the semiclassical limit, these results match with previous purely semiclassical treatments, which yield excellent agreement with experimental observations. The analytical time-dependent results predict perfect photon statistics conversion from the pump to the Stokes and nonclassical behavior under certain operational conditions.
