The performance of three analytical methods for multiple-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) data was assessed. The methods were the established method of Cole and Cole, the newly proposed method of Siconolfi and co-workers and a modification of this procedure. Method performance was assessed from the adequacy of the curve fitting techniques, as judged by the correlation coefficient and standard error of the estimate, and the accuracy of the different methods in determining the theoretical values of impedance parameters describing a set of model electrical circuits. The experimental data were well fitted by all curve-fitting procedures (r = 0.9 with SEE 0.3 to 3.5% or better for most circuit-procedure combinations). Cole-Cole modelling provided the most accurate estimates of circuit impedance values, generally within 1-2% of the theoretical values, followed by the Siconolfi procedure using a sixth-order polynomial regression (1-6% variation). None of the methods, however, accurately estimated circuit parameters when the measured impedances were low (<20 Omega) reflecting the electronic limits of the impedance meter used. These data suggest that Cole-Cole modelling remains the preferred method for the analysis of MFBIA data.

An equivalent unit cell waveguide approach (WGA) is described to study the behavior of a multilayer reflect array of variable-size patches/dipoles, The approach considers normal incidence of a plane wave on an infinite periodic array of identical radiating elements and introduces an equivalent unit cell waveguide to obtain the reflection coefficient. A field matching technique and method of moments (MoM) is used to determine fields in different layers of the equivalent waveguide. Good agreements for the phase of the reflection coefficient between the proposed model and those published in selected literatures are obtained. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A radial guide field matching method (RGFMM) is used to analyze a circular array antenna consisting of one active monopole surrounded by a concentric array of passive monopoles terminated in arbarary loads. An equivalent admittance matrix for this antenna system is determined to study the input admittance of the active monopole when the peripheral elements are terminated in open or short circuits. RGFMM results are compared with free-space method of moments (FS-MoM) results for a small switched-beam array a seven monopoles. Good agreement is noted. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

An equivalent unit cell waveguide approach (WGA) to designing 4 multilayer microstrip reflectarray of variable size patches is presented. In this approach, a normal incidence of a plane wave on an infinite periodic array of radiating elements is considered to obtain reflection coefficient phase curves for the reflectarray's elements. It is shown that this problem is equivalent to the problem of reflection of the dominant TEM mode in a waveguide with patches interleaved by layers of dielectric. This waveguide problem is solved using a field matching technique and a method of moments (MoM). Based on this solution, a fast computer algorithm is developed to generate reflection coefficient phase curves for a multilayer microstrip patch reflectarray. The validity of the developed algorithm is tested against alternative approaches and Agilent High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). Having confirmed the validity of the WGA approach, a small offset feed two-layer microstrip patch array is designed and developed. This reflectarray is tested experimentally and shows good performance.

The validity of the concept of equivalent sphere introduced by Aris in 1957 to multicomponent reacting systems is investigated in this paper. A network of C6 hydrocarbon reforming reaction and a fixed bed reactor are taken as the model reaction network and the reactor configuration, respectively.

We review the description of noise in electronic circuits in terms of electron transport. The Poisson process is used as a unifying principle. In recent years, much attention has been given to current noise in light-emitting diodes and laser diodes. In these devices, random events associated with electron transport are correlated with photon emission times, thus modifying both the current statistics and the statistics of the emitted light. We give a review of experiments in this area with special emphasis on the ability of such devices to produce subshot-noise currents and light beams. Finally we consider the noise properties of a class of mesoscopic devices based on the quantum tunnelling of an electron into and out of a bound state. We present a simple quantum model of this process which confirms that the current noise in such a device should be subshot-noise.

The large fat globules that can be present in UHT milk due to inadequate homogenisation cause a cream layer to form that limits the shelf life of UHT milk. Four different particle size measurement techniques were used to measure the size of fat globules in poorly homogenised UHT milk processed in a UHT pilot plant. The thickness of the cream layer that formed during storage was negatively correlated with homogenisation pressure. It was positively correlated with the mass mean diameter and the percentage volume of particles between 1.5 and 2 mu m diameter, as determined by laser light scattering using the Malvern Mastersizer. Also, the thickness of the cream layer was positively correlated with the volume mode diameter and the percentage volume of particles between 1.5 and 2 mu m diameter, as determined by electrical impedance using the Coulter Counter. The cream layer thickness did not correlate significantly with the Coulter Counter measurements of volume mean diameter, or volume percentages of particles between 2 and 5 mu m or 5 and 10 mu m diameter. Spectroturbidimetry (Emulsion Quality Analyser) and light microscopy analyses were found to be unsuitable for assessing the size of the fat particles. This study suggests that the fat globule size distribution as determined by the electrical impedance method (Coulter Counter) is the most useful for determining the efficiency of homogenisation and therefore for predicting the stability of the fat emulsion in UHT milk during storage.

This paper studies life-cycle preferences over consumption and health status. We show that cost-effectiveness analysis is consistent with cost-benefit analysis if the Lifetime utility function is additive over time, multiplicative in the utility of consumption and the utility of health status, and if the utility of consumption is constant over time. We derive the conditions under which the lifetime utility function takes this form, both under expected utility theory and under rank-dependent utility theory, which is currently the most important nonexpected utility theory. If cost-effectiveness analysis is consistent with cost-benefit analysis, it is possible to derive tractable expressions for the willingness to pay for quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). The willingness to pay for QALYs depends on wealth, remaining life expectancy, health status, and the possibilities for intertemporal substitution of consumption. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a vector to be the fine structure of a directed triple system of index 3 for upsilon = 2 (mod 3).

An equivalent algorithm is proposed to simulate thermal effects of the magma intrusion in geological systems, which are composed of porous rocks. Based on the physical and mathematical equivalence, the original magma solidification problem with a moving boundary between the rock and intruded magma is transformed into a new problem without the moving boundary but with a physically equivalent heat source. From the analysis of an ideal solidification model, the physically equivalent heat source has been determined in this paper. The major advantage in using the proposed equivalent algorithm is that the fixed finite element mesh with a variable integration time step can be employed to simulate the thermal effect of the intruded magma solidification using the conventional finite element method. The related numerical results have demonstrated the correctness and usefulness of the proposed equivalent algorithm for simulating the thermal effect of the intruded magma solidification in geological systems. The technical reliability (i.e., interinstrument and interoperator reliability) of three SEAC-swept frequency bioimpedance monitors was assessed for both errors of measurement and associated analyses. In addition, intraoperator and intrainstrument variability was evaluated for repeat measures over a 4-hour period. The measured impedance values from a range of resistance-capacitance circuits were accurate to within 3% of theoretical values over a range of 50-800 ohms. Similarly, phase was measured over the range 1 degrees-19 degrees with a maximum deviation of 1.3 degrees from the theoretical value. The extrapolated impedance at zero frequency was equally well determined (+/-3%). However, the accuracy of the extrapolated value at infinite frequency was decreased, particularly at impedances below 50 ohms (approaching the lower limit of the measurement range of the instrument). The interinstrument/operator variation for whole body measurements were recorded on human volunteers with biases of less than +/-1% for measured impedance values and less than 3% for phase. The variation in the extrapolated values of impedance at zero and infinite frequencies included variations due to operator choice of the analysis parameters but was still less than +/-0.5%. Computer modelling has shown that electrical characteristics of individual pixels may be extracted from within multiple-frequency electrical impedance tomography (MFEIT) images formed using a reference data set obtained from a purely resistive, homogeneous medium. In some applications it is desirable to extract the electrical characteristics of individual pixels from images where a purely resistive, homogeneous reference data set is not available. One such application of the technique of MFEIT is to allow the acquisition of in vivo images using reference data sets obtained from a non-homogeneous medium with a reactive component. However, the reactive component of the reference data set introduces difficulties with the extraction of the true electrical characteristics from the image pixels. This study was a preliminary investigation of a technique to extract electrical parameters from multifrequency images when the reference data set has a reactive component. Unlike the situation in which a homogenous, resistive data set is available, it is not possible to obtain the impedance and phase information directly from the image pixel values of the MFEIT images data set, as the phase of the reactive reference is not known. The method reported here to extract the electrical characteristics (the Cole-Cole plot) initially assumes that this phase angle is zero. With this assumption, an impedance spectrum can be directly extracted from the image set. To obtain the true Cole-Cole plot a correction must be applied to account for the inherent rotation of the extracted impedance spectrum about the origin, which is a result of the assumption. This work shows that the angle of rotation associated with the reactive component of the reference data set may be determined using a priori knowledge of the distribution of frequencies of the Cole-Cole plot. Using this angle of rotation, the true Cole-Cole plot can be obtained from the impedance spectrum extracted from the MFEIT image data set. The method was investigated using simulated data, both with and without noise, and also for image data obtained in vitro. The in vitro studies involved 32 logarithmically spaced frequencies from 4 kHz up to 1 MHz and demonstrated that differences between the true characteristics and those of the impedance spectrum were reduced significantly after application of the correction technique. The differences between the extracted parameters and the true values prior to correction were in the range from 16% to 70%. Following application of the correction technique the differences were reduced to less than 5%. The parameters obtained from the Cole-Cole plot may be useful as a characterization of the nature and health of the imaged tissues.
