We present a detailed investigation into the recent star formation histories of 5697 luminous red galaxies (LRGs) based on the H delta (4101 angstrom), and [O II] (3727 angstrom) lines and the D4000 index. LRGs are luminous (L > 3L*) galaxies which have been selected to have photometric properties consistent with an old, passively evolving stellar population. For this study, we utilize LRGs from the recently completed 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO Survey (2SLAQ). Equivalent widths of the H delta and [O II] lines are measured and used to define three spectral types, those with only strong H delta absorption (k+a), those with strong [O II] in emission (em) and those with both (em+a). All other LRGs are considered to have passive star formation histories. The vast majority of LRGs are found to be passive (similar to 80 per cent); however, significant numbers of k+a (2.7 per cent), em+a (1.2 per cent) and em LRGs (8.6 per cent) are identified. An investigation into the redshift dependence of the fractions is also performed. A sample of SDSS MAIN galaxies with colours and luminosities consistent with the 2SLAQ LRGs is selected to provide a low-redshift comparison. While the em and em+a fractions are consistent with the low-redshift SDSS sample, the fraction of k+a LRGs is found to increase significantly with redshift. This result is interpreted as an indication of an increasing amount of recent star formation activity in LRGs with redshift. By considering the expected lifetime of the k+a phase, the number of LRGs which will undergo a k+a phase can be estimated. A crude comparison of this estimate with the predictions from semi-analytic models of galaxy formation shows that the predicted level of k+a and em+a activities is not sufficient to reconcile the predicted mass growth for massive early types in a hierarchical merging scenario.

The H I Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind extragalactic H I 21-cm emission-line survey covering the whole southern sky from declination -90degrees to +25degrees. The HIPASS catalogue (HICAT), containing 4315 H I-selected galaxies from the region south of declination +2degrees, is presented in Meyer et al. (Paper I). This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT, which are calculated from the recovery rate of synthetic sources and follow-up observations, respectively. HICAT is found to be 99 per cent complete at a peak flux of 84 mJy and an integrated flux of 9.4 Jy km. s(-1). The overall reliability is 95 per cent, but rises to 99 per cent for sources with peak fluxes >58 mJy or integrated flux >8.2 Jy km s(-1). Expressions are derived for the uncertainties on the most important HICAT parameters: peak flux, integrated flux, velocity width and recessional velocity. The errors on HICAT parameters are dominated by the noise in the HIPASS data, rather than by the parametrization procedure.

A number of very small isolated H II regions have been discovered at projected distances up to 30 kpc from their nearest galaxy. These H II regions appear as tiny emission-line objects in narrowband images obtained by the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). We present spectroscopic confirmation of four isolated H II regions in two systems; both systems have tidal H I features. The results are consistent with stars forming in interactive debris as a result of cloud-cloud collisions. The Halpha luminosities of the isolated H II regions are equivalent to the ionizing flux of only a few O stars each. They are most likely ionized by stars formed in situ and represent atypical star formation in the low-density environment of the outer parts of galaxies. A small but finite intergalactic star formation rate will enrich and ionize the surrounding medium. In one system, NGC 1533, we calculate a star formation rate of 1.5 x 10(-3) M-. yr(-1), resulting in a metal enrichment of similar to 1 x 10(-3) solar for the continuous formation of stars. Such systems may have been more common in the past and a similar enrichment level is measured for the metallicity floor'' in damped Lyalpha absorption systems.

We have discovered nine ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the Virgo Cluster, extending samples of these objects outside the Fornax Cluster. Using the Two Degree Field (2dF) multifiber spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, the new Virgo members were found among 1500 color-selected, starlike targets with 16: 0 < b(j) < 20.2 in a 2 degrees diameter field centered on M87 (NGC 4486). The newly found UCDs are comparable to the UCDs in the Fornax Cluster, with sizes less than or similar to 100 pc, -12.9 < M-B < -10.7, and exhibiting red absorption-line spectra, indicative of an older stellar population. The properties of these objects remain consistent with the tidal threshing model for the origin of UCDs from the surviving nuclei of nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies disrupted in the cluster core but can also be explained as objects that were formed by mergers of star clusters created in galaxy interactions. The discovery that UCDs exist in Virgo shows that this galaxy type is probably a ubiquitous phenomenon in clusters of galaxies; coupled with their possible origin by tidal threshing, the UCD population is a potential indicator and probe of the formation history of a given cluster. We also describe one additional bright UCD with M-B = -12.0 in the core of the Fornax Cluster. We find no further UCDs in our Fornax Cluster Spectroscopic Survey down to bj 19.5 in two additional 2dF fields extending as far as 3 degrees from the center of the cluster. All six Fornax bright UCDs identified with 2dF lie within 0.degrees 5 (projected distance of 170 kpc) of the central elliptical galaxy NGC 1399.

We present a spectroscopic survey of almost 15 000 candidate intermediate-redshift luminous red galaxies (LRGs) brighter than i = 19.8, observed with 2dF on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The targets were selected photometrically from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and lie along two narrow equatorial strips covering 180 deg(2). Reliable redshifts were obtained for 92 per cent of the targets and the selection is very efficient: over 90 per cent have 0.45 < z < 0.8. More than 80 per cent of the similar to 11 000 red galaxies have pure absorption-line spectra consistent with a passively evolving old stellar population. The redshift, photometric and spatial distributions of the LRGs are described. The 2SLAQ data will be released publicly from mid-2006, providing a powerful resource for observational cosmology and the study of galaxy evolution.

We introduce the Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG), a census of star formation in H I selected galaxies. The survey consists of H alpha and R-band imaging of a sample of 468 galaxies selected from the H I Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). The sample spans three decades in H I mass and is free of many of the biases that affect other star-forming galaxy samples. We present the criteria for sample selection, list the entire sample, discuss our observational techniques, and describe the data reduction and calibration methods. This paper focuses on 93 SINGG targets whose observations have been fully reduced and analyzed to date. The majority of these show a single emission line galaxy (ELG). We see multiple ELGs in 13 fields, with up to four ELGs in a single field. All of the targets in this sample are detected in H alpha, indicating that dormant (non-star-forming) galaxies with M-H I greater than or similar to 3x10(7) M-circle dot are very rare. A database of the measured global properties of the ELGs is presented. The ELG sample spans 4 orders of magnitude in luminosity (H alpha and R band), and H alpha surface brightness, nearly 3 orders of magnitude in R surface brightness and nearly 2 orders of magnitude in H alpha equivalent width (EW). The surface brightness distribution of our sample is broader than that of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic sample, the EW distribution is broader than prism-selected samples, and the morphologies found include all common types of star-forming galaxies (e.g., irregular, spiral, blue compact dwarf, starbursts, merging and colliding systems, and even residual star formation in S0 and Sa spirals). Thus, SINGG presents a superior census of star formation in the local universe suitable for further studies ranging from the analysis of H II regions to determination of the local cosmic star formation rate density.

Transporters of Ca2+ are potential drug targets and Ca2+ is a useful signal in the assessment of G-protein-coupled receptor activation. Assays involving the assessment of intracellular Ca2+ using microplate readers most often use Ca2+ indicators which do not exhibit a spectra shift on Ca2+ binding (e.g. fluo-3). Indicators that do exhibit a spectral shift upon Ca2+ binding (e.g. fura-2) offer potential advantages for the calibration of intracellular Ca2+ levels. However, experimental limitations may limit the use of ratiometric dyes in microplate readers capable of screening. In this study, we compared the assessment of intracellular Ca2+ in adherent breast cancer cells using ratiometric and nonratiometric Ca2+ indicators. Our results demonstrate that both fluo-3 and fura-2 detect ATP dose-dependent increases in intracellular Ca2+ in the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line and that some of the limitations in the use of fura-2 appear to be overcome by the use of glass bottom microplates. The calibrated intracellular Ca2+ levels derived using fura-2 are consistent with those from microscopy and cuvette-based studies. Fura-2 may be useful in microplate studies, where cell lines with different properties are compared or where screening treatments lead to differences in the number of cells or dye loading. Previously reported excitation spectra for eumelanin are sparse and inconsistent. Moreover, these studies have failed to account for probe beam attenuation and emission reabsorption within the samples, making them qualitative at best. We report for the first time quantitative excitation spectra for synthetic eumelanin, acquired for a range of solution concentrations and emission wavelengths. Our data indicate that probe beam attenuation and emission reabsorption significantly affect the spectra even in low-concentration eumelanin solutions and that previously published data do not reflect the true excitation profile. We apply a correction procedure (previously applied to emission spectra) to account for these effects. Application of this procedure reconstructs the expected relationship of signal intensity with concentration, and the normalized spectra show a similarity in form to the absorption profiles. These spectra reveal valuable information regarding the photophysics and photochemistry of eumelanin. Most notably, an excitation peak at 365 urn (3.40 eV), whose position is independent of emission wavelength, is possibly attributable to a 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) component singly linked to a polymeric structure.

Spectroscopic studies of pheomelanin and its constituents have been sparse. These data present what is by far the most complete description of the fluorescence characteristics of synthetic pheomelanin. Emission spectra between 260 and 600 nm were acquired, for excitation wavelengths between 250 and 500 nm at 1-nm intervals. A quantum yield map is also presented, correcting the fluorescence intensities for differences in species concentration and molar absorptivity. These fluorescence features exhibit interesting similarities and differences to eumelanin, and these data are interpreted with respect to possible chemical structures. Overall, these data suggest that pheomelanin oligomers may be more tightly coupled than those of eumelanin. Finally, the quantum yield is shown to be on the order of 10(-4) and exhibit a complex dependence on excitation energy, varying by a factor of 4 across the energies employed here.
