H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy and FT-Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the properties of a polymer gel dosimeter post-irradiation. The polymer gel (PACT) is composed of acrylamide, N,N'-methylene-bisacrylamide, gelatin, and water. The formation of a polyacrylamide network within the gelatin matrix follows a dose dependence nonlinearly correlated to the disappearance of the double bonds from the dissolved monomers within the absorbed dose range of 0-50 Gy. The signal from the gelatin remains constant with irradiation. We show that the NMR spin-spin relaxation times (T-2) of PAGs irradiated to up to 50 Gy measured in a NMR spectrometer and a clinical magnetic resonance imaging scanner can be modeled using the spectroscopic intensity of the growing polymer network. More specifically, we show that the nonlinear T-2 dependence against dose can be understood in terms of the fraction of protons in three different proton pools. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Solid-state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with cross-polarisation (CP) and magic-angle-spinning (MAS) was used to: (a) examine the changes in carbon (C) composition of windrowed harvest residues during the first 3 years of hoop pine plantations in subtropical Australia; (b) assess the impacts of windrowed harvest residues on soil organic matter (SOM) composition and quality in the 0-10 cm soil layer. Harvest residues were collected from 0-, 1-, 2- and 3-year-old windrows of ca. 2.5 m width (15 m apart for 0-, 1- and 2-year-old sites and 10 m apart for 3-year-old site). Soils from the 0 to 10 cm soil layer were collected from the 1-, 2- and 3-year-old sites. The 13C NMR spectra of the harvest residues indicated the presence of lignin in the hoop pine wood, foliage and newly incorporated organic matter (NIOM). Condensed tannin structures were found in the decay-resistant bark, small wood and foliage, but were absent in other residue components and SOM. The NMR spectra of small wood samples contained condensed tannin structures because the outer layer of bark was not removed. NIOM showed a shift from foliage-like structures (celluloses) to lignin-type structures, indicating an incorporation of woody residues from the decomposing harvest residues. Suberins were also present in the small wood, foliage and bark. The 13C CP NMR spectra of SOM indicated that in areas where windrows were present, SOM did not show compositional changes. However, an increase in SOM quality under the windrows in the second year after their formation as characterised by the alkyl C/O-alkyl C (A/O-A) ratio was mainly due to inputs from the decomposition of the labile, readily available components of the windrowed harvest residues. The reactions between novolac resins and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) which occur on curing have been studied by C-13 and N-15 high-resolution n.m.r. in both solution and the solid state. Strong evidence for the existence of many curing intermediates is obtained. New curing intermediates are reported along with experimental data to support previously postulated intermediates. The initial curing reactions between novolac and HMTA produce various substituted benzoxazines and benzylamines. Thermal decomposition/oxidation and further reactions of these initial intermediates generate methylene linkages between phenolic rings for chain extension and cross-linking. Among the three kinds of methylene linkages, the para-para methylene linkages are formed at relatively lower temperatures. Various imine, amide and imide side-products also concurrently appear during the process. The initial amount of HMTA plays a critical role in the curing reactivity and chemical structures of the cured resins. The lower the amount of HMTA, the lower the temperature at which curing occurs, and the lower the amount of the nitrogen-containing side-products in the finally cured resins. The ortho-linked intermediates are relatively stable, and can remain in the cured resins up to higher temperatures. The influence of change in land-use from native vegetation to pasture (20-71 yr after conversion), and subsequent change from pasture to eucalypt plantation (7-10 yr after conversion) on soil organic matter quality was investigated using C-13 CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. We studied surface soil (0-10 cm) from six sites representing a range of soil, and climate types from south-western Australia. Total C in the samples ranged from 1.6 to 5.5%, but the relative proportions of the four primary spectral regions (alkyl, O-alkyl, aromatic and carboxylic) were similar across the sites, and changes due to land-use at each site were relatively minor. Main impacts of changed land-use were higher O-alkyl (carbohydrate) material under pasture than under native vegetation and plantation (P = 0.048), and lower aromatic C under pasture than under native vegetation (P = 0.027). The decrease in aromatic C in pasture soils was related to time since clearing. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Changes in molecular motion in blends of PEO-PVPh have been studied using measurements of C-13 T-1 rho relaxation times. C-13 T-1 rho relaxation has been confirmed as arising from spin-lattice interactions by observation of the variation in T-1 rho with rf field strength and temperature. In the pure homopolymers a minimum in T-1 rho is observed at ca. 50 K above the glass transition temperatures detected by DSC. After blending, the temperature of the minimum in T-1 rho for PEO increased, while that for PVPh decreased, however, the minima, which correspond to the temperatures where the average correlation times for reorientation are close to 3.1 mu s, are separated by 45 K (in a 45% PEO-PVPh blend). These phenomena are explained in terms of the local nature of T-1 rho measurements. The motions of the individual homopolymer chains are only partially coupled in the blend. A short T-1 rho has been observed for protonated aromatic carbons, and assigned to phenyl rings undergoing large-angle oscillatory motion, The effects of blending, and temperature, on the proportion of rings undergoing oscillatory motion are analyzed.

The C-13 NMR data of five iminopropadienones R-N=C=C=C=O as well as carbon suboxide, C3O2, have been examined theoretically and experimentally. The best theoretical results were obtained using the GIAO/B3LYP/6-31 +G**//MP2/6-31G* level of theory, which reproduces the chemical shifts of the iminopropadienone substituents extremely well while underestimating those of the cumulenic carbons by 5-10 ppm. The computationally faster GIAO/HF/6-31 + G**//B3LYP/6-31 G* level is also adequate. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The gamma-radiolysis of poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfuoromethyl vinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE) was investigated using solid state F-19 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Chain scission products identified in the polymer were saturated chain ends -CF2CF3 (G = 1.0), methyl ether end groups -CF2OCF3 (G = 0.9), acid end groups -CF2COOH (G = 0.5), and a small amount of terminal unsaturation -CF=CF2 (G = 0.2). A mechanism for the formation of these scission products was proposed and the G value for main chain scission, G(S), was determined to be 1.4. Cross-linking of TFE/PMVE was found to proceed via a Y-linking mechanism. The G value for cross-linking, G(X), was determined to be 0.9. A maximum of 0.2 mol % cross-links were formed under the experimental conditions.

The extent of mixing in blends of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) (27% HV) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) has been measured using a number of different techniques, principally solid-state NMR. Differential scanning calorimetry DSC measurements indicated effective mixing of the polymer chains on a scale of several nanometres. The results of H-1 T-1 and H-1 T-1rho. measurements confirm intimate mixing of the chains. A change on blending in the H-1 T-1rho, and the H-1 NMR line width of the signal from the protons of PVAc was consistent with an increase in the amplitude and frequency of motion of this component. The PVAc chains reside within the inter-lamellar space, as confirmed by spin diffusion measurements after H-1 T-1rho preparation. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

Inorganic nutrients play a critical role in determining benthic community structure in tropical seas. This study examined the impact of adding inorganic nutrients (ammonium and phosphate) on the isotopic composition of 2 reef-building corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Heliofungia actiniformis, on the southern Great Barrier Reef. The addition of elevated nutrients to patch reefs that pond at low tide did not perturb the C:N ratio of either species or their symbiotic dinoflagellates. The C:N ratios were significantly higher in material extracted from the skeleton (14.8 +/- 1.50 and 10.8 +/- 1.42) than either host (7.6 +/- 0.87 and 6.0 +/- 0.71) or symbiotic dinoflagellates (5.7 +/- 0.48 and 6.9 +/- 0.66) (P. damicornis and H. actiniformis respectively; 95 confidence intervals). The ratio of acquired N to background N suggests that the added dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) accounted for 50 to 100% of total nitrogen within the tissues of P. damicornis and H. actiniformis at the end of the experiment. The addition of the isotopically depleted nutrients (delta(15) N = 0parts per thousand) to patch reefs significantly decreased delta(15)N from control values of between 3 and 4 to values to below 1 in the case of all compartments, while delta(13)C values were relatively unresponsive to nutrient treatments. These findings suggest that coral delta(15)N has the potential to provide a historical record of the delta(15)N of dissolved nitrogen surrounding reef-building corals and their symbiotic dinoflagellates.

Condensation of (-)-norephedrine with excess formaldehyde under mild conditions leads to formation of the 2:1 condensation product N,N'-methylenebis(4-methyl-5-phenyl)oxazolidine compared with the reaction with 1 mol of formaldehyde, which leads to 4-methyl-5-phenyloxazolidine. H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy was used to monitor the stability of this compound and its decomposition products. The 2:1 condensation product is found to be stable in CDC1(3) but breaks down rapidly in CD3OD to yield a 50:50 mixture of 4-methyl-5-phenyloxazolidine and 3-hydroxymethyl-4-methyl-5-phenyloxazolidine. Upon addition of D2O to this equimolar mixture, the latter compound decomposes to norephedrine and formaldehyde, whereas the former compound is stable. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Solid-state C-13 NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate the three-dimensional structure of melittin as lyophilized powder and in ditetradecylphosphatidylcholine (DTPC) membranes. The distance between specifically labeled carbons in analogs [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Ala4, [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Leu6, [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Ala15, [2-C-13]Leu13-[1-C-13]Ala15, and [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Leu16 was measured by rotational resonance. As expected, the internuclear distances measured in [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Ala4 and [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Leu6 were consistent with alpha -helical structure in the N-terminus irrespective of environment. The Internuclear distances measured in [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Ala15, [2-C-13]Leu13-[1-C-13]Ala15, and [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Leu16 revealed, via molecular modeling, some dependence upon environment for conformation in the region of the bend in helical structure induced by Pro14. A slightly larger interhelical angle between the N- and C-terminal helices was indicated for peptide in dry or hydrated gel state DTPC (139 degrees -145 degrees) than in lyophilized powder (121 degrees -139 degrees) or crystals (129 degrees). The angle, however, is not as great as deduced for melittin in aligned bilayers of DTPC in the liquid-crystalline state (similar to 160 degrees) (R. Smith, F. Separovic, T. J. Milne, A. Whittaker, F. M. Bennett, B. A. Cornell, and A. Makriyannis, 1994, J. Mol, Biol 241:456-466). The study illustrates the utility of rotational resonance in determining local structure within peptide-lipid complexes.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of a (CO2)-C-13 breath test for the prediction of short-duration energy expenditure. Methods: Eight healthy volunteers walked at 1.5 km.h(-1) for 60 min followed by 60-min recovery. During this time, the energy cost of physical activity was measured via respiratory calorimetry and a C-13 bicarbonate breath test. A further eight subjects were tested using the same two methods during a 60-min cycle at 0.5 kp. 30 ipm followed by a 60-min recovery. The rate of appearance of (CO2)-C-13, (RaCO2) was measured and the mean ratio, (V) over dot CO2/RaCO2 was used to calculate energy expenditure using the isotopic approach. Results: As would be expected, there was a significant difference in the energy cost of walking and cycling using both methods (P < 0.05). However. no significant differences were observed between respiratory calorimetry and the isotope method for measurement of energy expenditure while walking or cycling. Conclusions: These data suggest that the C-13 breath test is a valid method that can be used to measure the energy cost of short duration physical activity in a field setting.

The structural changes which occur on the gamma -radiolysis of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) under vacuum at 303 K have been investigated using Si-29 and C-13 NMR. New structural units consistent with main chain scission and crosslinking through both H-linking and Y-linking reactions have been identified. The results obtained at various absorbed doses have been used to calculate the G-values for scission and crosslinking. G-values for scission of G(S) = 1.3 +/- 0.2, for H-linking of G(D-CH2-R) = 0.34 +/- 0.02 and for Y-Linking of G(Y) = 1.70 +/- 0.09 were obtained for radiolysis under vacuum at 303 K. Thus crosslinking predominates over scission for radiolysis of PDMS under these conditions, and, by contrast with previous studies, Y-links have been shown to be the predominant form of crosslinks. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) was used to pre-treat forest soils of south-east Queensland for assessing the effectiveness of iron (Fe) removal, carbon (C) composition using C-13 cross-polarisation (CP) with magic-angle-spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) before and after the HF pre-treatment, and the improvement of C-13 CPMAS NMR spectra. Soil samples were collected from 4 experimental sites of different soil types, harvest residue management or prescribed burning, and tree species. More than 86% of Fe was in all soil types removed by the HF treatment. The C-13 NMR spectral quality was improved with increased resolution, especially in the alkyl C and O-alkyl C regions, and reduced NMR run-time (1-5 h per sample compared with >20 h per sample without the pre-treatment). The C composition appeared to alter slightly after the pre-treatment, but this might be largely due to improved spectrometer conditions and increased resolution leading to more accurate NMR spectral integration. Organic C recovery after HF pre-treatment varied with soil types and forest management, and soluble soil organic matter (SOM) could be lost during the pre-treatment. The Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) spectra of HF extracts indicated the preferential removal of carboxylic C groups during the pre-treatment, but this could also be due to adsorbed water on the mineral matter. The NMR spectra revealed some changes in C composition and quality due to residue management and decomposition. Overall, the HF treatment was a useful pre-treatment for obtaining semi-quantitative C-13 CPMAS NMR spectra of subtropical Australian forest soils.
