Powder metallurgy alloys are typically inhomogeneous with a significant amount of porosity. This complicates conventional transmission electron microscopy sample preparation. However, the use of focused ion beam milling allows site specific transmission electron microscopy samples to be prepared in a short amount of time. This paper presents a method that can be used to produce transmission electron microscopy samples from an Al-Cu-Mg PM alloy. (C) 2003 IoM Communications Ltd. A lithographic method was used to produce polycrystalline diamond films having highly defined surface geometry, showing an array of diamond tips for possible application as a field emitter device. The films grown in this study used microwave plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition (MACVD) on a silicon substrate; the substrate was then dissolved away to reveal the surface features on the diamond film. It is possible to align the crystallite direction and affect the electron emission properties using a voltage bias to enhance the nucleation process and influence the nuclei to a preferred orientation. This study focuses on the identification of the distribution of crystal directions in the film, using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) to identify the crystallographic character of the film surface. EBSD allows direct examination of the individual diamond grains, grains boundaries and the crystal orientation of each individual crystallite. The EBSD maps of the bottom (nucleation side) of the films, following which a layer of film is ion-milled away and the mapping process repeated. The method demonstrates experimentally that oriented nucleation occurs and the thin sections allow the crystal texture to be reconstructed in 3-D. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the evolution of structural defects in AlxGa1-xN films (with x=0.0-0.6) bombarded with kilo-electron-volt heavy ions at 77 and 300 K. We use a combination of Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. Results show that an increase in Al content not only strongly enhances dynamic annealing processes but can also change the main features of the amorphization behavior. In particular, the damage buildup behavior at 300 K is essentially similar for all the AlGaN films studied. Ion-beam-produced disorder at 300 K accumulates preferentially in the crystal bulk region up to a certain saturation level (similar to50%-60% relative disorder). Bombardment at 300 K above a critical fluence results in a rapid increase in damage from the saturation level up to complete disordering, with a buried amorphous layer nucleating in the crystal bulk. However, at 77 K, the saturation effect of lattice disorder in the bulk occurs only for xgreater than or similar to0.1. Based on the analysis of these results for AlGaN and previously reported data for InGaN, we discuss physical mechanisms of the susceptibility of group-III nitrides to ion-beam-induced disordering and to the crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition. Semi-insulating InP was implanted with MeV P, As, Ga, and In ions, and the resulting evolution of structural properties with increased annealing temperature was analyzed using double crystal x-ray diffractometry and cross sectional transmission electron microscopy. The types of damage identified are correlated with scanning spreading resistance and scanning capacitance measurements, as well as with previously measured Hall effect and time resolved photoluminescence results. We have identified multiple layers of conductivity in the samples which occur due to the nonuniform damage profile of a single implant. Our structural studies have shown that the amount and type of damage caused by implantation does not scale with implant ion atomic mass. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Optical metallographic techniques for grain-size measurement give unreliable results for high pressure diecast Mg-Al alloys and electron back-scattered diffraction mapping (EBSD) provides a good tool for improving the quality of these measurements. An application of EBSD mapping to this question is described, and data for some castings are presented. Ion-beam milling was needed to prepare suitable samples, and this technique is detailed. As is well-known for high pressure die castings, the grain size distribution comprises at least two populations. The mean grain size of the fine-grained population was similar in both AZ91 and AM60 and in two casting thicknesses (2 mm and 5 mm) and, contrary to previously published reports, it did not vary with depth below the surface.

A set of varying-thickness Au-films were thermally evaporated onto poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) thin film surfaces. The Au/PSA bi-layer targets were then implanted with 50 keV N+ ions to a fluence of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 to promote metal-to-polymer adhesion and to enhance their mechanical and electrical performance. Electrical conductivity measurements of the implanted Au/PSA thin films showed a sharp percolation behavior versus the pre-implant Au-film thickness with a percolation threshold near the nominal thickness of 44 Å. The electrical conductivity results are discussed along with the film microstructure and the elemental diffusion/mixing within the Au/PSA interface obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ion beam analysis techniques (RBS and ERD).

The diagrammatic strong-coupling perturbation theory (SCPT) for correlated electron systems is developed for intersite Coulomb interaction and for a nonorthogonal basis set. The construction is based on iterations of exact closed equations for many - electron Green functions (GFs) for Hubbard operators in terms of functional derivatives with respect to external sources. The graphs, which do not contain the contributions from the fluctuations of the local population numbers of the ion states, play a special role: a one-to-one correspondence is found between the subset of such graphs for the many - electron GFs and the complete set of Feynman graphs of weak-coupling perturbation theory (WCPT) for single-electron GFs. This fact is used for formulation of the approximation of renormalized Fermions (ARF) in which the many-electron quasi-particles behave analogously to normal Fermions. Then, by analyzing: (a) Sham's equation, which connects the self-energy and the exchange- correlation potential in density functional theory (DFT); and (b) the Galitskii and Migdal expressions for the total energy, written within WCPT and within ARF SCPT, a way we suggest a method to improve the description of the systems with correlated electrons within the local density approximation (LDA) to DFT. The formulation, in terms of renormalized Fermions LIDA (RF LDA), is obtained by introducing the spectral weights of the many electron GFs into the definitions of the charge density, the overlap matrices, effective mixing and hopping matrix elements, into existing electronic structure codes, whereas the weights themselves have to be found from an additional set of equations. Compared with LDA+U and self-interaction correction (SIC) methods, RF LDA has the advantage of taking into account the transfer of spectral weights, and, when formulated in terms of GFs, also allows for consideration of excitations and nonzero temperature. Going beyond the ARF SCPT, as well as RF LIDA, and taking into account the fluctuations of ion population numbers would require writing completely new codes for ab initio calculations. The application of RF LDA for ab initio band structure calculations for rare earth metals is presented in part 11 of this study (this issue). (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We have previously shown that a division of the f-shell into two subsystems gives a better understanding of the cohesive properties as well the general behavior of lanthanide systems. In this article, we present numerical computations, using the suggested method. We show that the picture is consistent with most experimental data, e.g., the equilibrium volume and electronic structure in general. Compared with standard energy band calculations and calculations based on the self-interaction correction and LIDA + U, the f-(non-f)-mixing interaction is decreased by spectral weights of the many-body states of the f-ion. The synthesis, structural characterization, and photophysical behavior of a 14-membered tetraazamacrocycle with pendant 4-dimethylaminobenzyl (DMAB) and 9-anthracenylmethyl groups is reported (L-3, 6-((9-anthracenylmethyl)amino)-trans-6,13-dimethyl-13-((4-dimethylaminobenzyl)amino)-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane). In its free base form, this compound displays rapid intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) quenching of the anthracene emission, with both the secondary amines and the DMAB group capable of acting as electron donors. When complexed with Zn(II), the characteristic fluorescence of the anthracene chromophore is restored as the former of these pathways is deactivated by coordination. Importantly, it is shown that the DMAB group, which remains uncoordinated and PET active, acts only very weakly to quench emission, by comparison to the behavior of a model Zn complex lacking the pendant DMAB group, [ZnL2](2+) (Chart 1). By contrast, Stern-Volmer analysis of intermolecular quenching of [ZnL2](2+) by N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) has shown that this reaction is diffusion limited. Hence, the pivotal role of the bridge in influencing intramolecular PET is highlighted.

Zinc oxide single crystals implanted at room temperature with high-dose (1.4x10(17) cm(-2)) 300 keV As+ ions are annealed at 1000-1200 degrees C. Damage recovery is studied by a combination of Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry (RBS/C), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM), and atomic force microscopy. Results show that such a thermal treatment leads to the decomposition and evaporation of the heavily damaged layer instead of apparent defect recovery and recrystallization that could be inferred from RBS/C and XTEM data alone. This study shows that heavily damaged ZnO has relatively poor thermal stability compared to as-grown ZnO which is a significant result and has implications for understanding results on thermal annealing of ion-implanted ZnO.
