A range of polyimides have been subjected to electron beam radiolysis at different temperatures. These polyimides were chemically designed to suit space applications, being either transparent or having groups which provide oxidation resistance. The structural changes that occur in the polyimides, when subjected to electron beam irradiation doses up to 18.5 MGy and up to temperatures close to their glass transition temperatures, were studied using FT-Raman spectroscopy. The range of polyimides studied included a series of perfluoropolyimides, a silicon-modified polyimide, and Ultem. The changes in the Raman peak intensities of the different groups indicated scission reactions involving the imide rings and ether linkages. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Powder metallurgy alloys are typically inhomogeneous with a significant amount of porosity. This complicates conventional transmission electron microscopy sample preparation. However, the use of focused ion beam milling allows site specific transmission electron microscopy samples to be prepared in a short amount of time. This paper presents a method that can be used to produce transmission electron microscopy samples from an Al-Cu-Mg PM alloy. (C) 2003 IoM Communications Ltd. Optical metallographic techniques for grain-size measurement give unreliable results for high pressure diecast Mg-Al alloys and electron back-scattered diffraction mapping (EBSD) provides a good tool for improving the quality of these measurements. An application of EBSD mapping to this question is described, and data for some castings are presented. Ion-beam milling was needed to prepare suitable samples, and this technique is detailed. As is well-known for high pressure die castings, the grain size distribution comprises at least two populations. The mean grain size of the fine-grained population was similar in both AZ91 and AM60 and in two casting thicknesses (2 mm and 5 mm) and, contrary to previously published reports, it did not vary with depth below the surface.

A set of varying-thickness Au-films were thermally evaporated onto poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) thin film surfaces. The Au/PSA bi-layer targets were then implanted with 50 keV N+ ions to a fluence of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 to promote metal-to-polymer adhesion and to enhance their mechanical and electrical performance. Electrical conductivity measurements of the implanted Au/PSA thin films showed a sharp percolation behavior versus the pre-implant Au-film thickness with a percolation threshold near the nominal thickness of 44 Å. The electrical conductivity results are discussed along with the film microstructure and the elemental diffusion/mixing within the Au/PSA interface obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ion beam analysis techniques (RBS and ERD).

Advances in three-dimensional (313) electron microscopy (EM) and image processing are providing considerable improvements in the resolution of subcellular volumes, macromolecular assemblies and individual proteins. However, the recovery of high-frequency information from biological samples is hindered by specimen sensitivity to beam damage. Low dose electron cryo-microscopy conditions afford reduced beam damage but typically yield images with reduced contrast and low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Here, we describe the properties of a new discriminative bilateral (DBL) filter that is based upon the bilateral filter implementation of Jiang et al. (Jiang, W., Baker, M.L., Wu, Q., Bajaj, C., Chin, W., 2003. Applications of a bilateral denoising filter in biological electron microscopy. J. Struc. Biol. 128, 82-97.). In contrast to the latter, the DBL filter can distinguish between object edges and high-frequency noise pixels through the use of an additional photometric exclusion function. As a result, high frequency noise pixels are smoothed, yet object edge detail is preserved. In the present study, we show that the DBL filter effectively reduces noise in low SNR single particle data as well as cellular tomograms of stained plastic sections. The properties of the DBL filter are discussed in terms of its usefulness for single particle analysis and for pre-processing cellular tomograms ahead of image segmentation. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc.
