Metal ion binding properties of the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporin A have been investigated. Complexation studies in acetonitrile solution using H-1 NMR and CD spectroscopy yielded 1:1 metal-peptide binding constants (log(10)K) for potassium(l), < 1, magnesium(II), 4.8 +/- 0.2. and calcium(II), 5.0 +/- 1.0. The interaction of copper(II) with cyclosporin A in methanol was investigated with UV/visible and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. No complexation of copper(II) was observed in neutral solution. In the presence of base, monomeric copper(II) complexes were detected. These results support the possibility that cyclosporin A has ionophoric properties for biologically important essential metal ions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The literature dealing with the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of unalloyed copper in aqueous chloride media is examined. The enormous quantity of polarisation and mixed/corrosion potential data that has been made available in the literature over the last 50 years has been compiled and discussed in a comprehensive review. For a wide range of electrode geometries, the importance of the chloride ion and the mass transport of anodic corrosion products on the corrosion behaviour of copper are made clear for both freshly polished and 'filmed' surfaces. The three-dimensional branched nature of dendritic macromolecules provides many potential sites per molecule for the complexation of metal ions. Therefore, dendrimers may act as hosts for metals with coordination potentially occurring at the periphery, the interior, or both. To understand further the complexation of dendrimers with metal ions EXAFS experiments were carried out. In this work, the interaction of amine-terminated polyamido(amine), PAMAM, dendrimer with copper(II) ions determined by EXAFS is reported. It was found that a model consisting of the copper(II) ion forming five- and six-membered rings by chelating with the primary amine, amide, and tertiary amine nitrogen donors of the PAMAM dendrimer could describe the experimental EXAFS data well. Corroborative evidence for binding to amide nitrogen donors comes from the broadening of NMR resonances of a copper(Il)-PAMAM mixture revealing the presence of paramagnetic copper(II) ions at these sites. The significance of the results presented in this paper is that copper(II) ions form complexes within the dendrimer structure and not just at the periphery. The current study may have implications for the use of PAMAM dendrimers as effective ligands in sensing systems.

Copper(II) bromide and chloride complexes of the new heptadentate ligand 2,6-bis(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methylpyridine (L) have been prepared. For the bromide complexes, chains of novel, approximately C-2-symmetric, chiral [Cu-2(L)Br-2](2+) 'wedge-shaped' tectons are found. The links between the dicopper tectons and the overall chirality and packing of the chains are dictated by the bromide ion content, not the counter anion. In contrast, the chloride complexes exhibit linked asymmetric [Cu-2(L)Cl-3](+) tectons with distinct N3CuCl2 and N4CuCl2 centres in the solid. The overall structures of the dicopper bromide and chloride units persist in solution irrespective of the halide. The redox chemistry of the various species is also described.

Patellamide D (patH(4)) is a cyclic octapeptide isolated from the ascidian Lissoclinum patella. The peptide possesses a 24-azacrown-8 macrocyclic structure containing two oxazoline and two thiazole rings, each separated by an amino acid. The present spectrophotometric, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and mass spectral studies show that patellamide D reacts with CuCl, and triethylamine in acetonitrile to form mononuclear and binuclear copper(II) complexes containing chloride. Molecular modelling and EPR studies suggest that the chloride anion bridges the copper(II) ions in the binuclear complex [Cu-2(patH(2))(mu-Cl)](+). These results contrast with a previous study employing both base and methanol, the latter substituting for chloride in the copper(II) complexes en route to the stable mu-carbonato binuclear copper(II) complex [Cu-2 (patH(2))(mu-CO3)]. Solvent clearly plays an important role in both stabilising these metal ion complexes and influencing their chemical reactivities. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A solution culture experiment was conducted to examine the effect of Cu toxicity on Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana Knuth.), a pasture species used in mine-site rehabilitation. The experiment used dilute, solution culture to achieve external nutrient concentrations, which were representative of the soil solution, and an ion exchange resin to maintain stable concentrations of Cu in solution. Copper toxicity was damaging to plant roots, with symptoms ranging from disruption of the root cuticle and reduced root hair proliferation, to severe deformation of root structure. A reduction in root growth was observed at an external Cu concentration of < 1 mu M, with damage evident from an external concentration of 0.2 mu M. Critical to the success of this experiment, in quantitatively examining the relationship between external Cu concentration and plant response, was the use of ion exchange resin to buffer the concentration of Cu in solution. After some initial difficulty with pH control, stable concentrations of Cu in solution were maintained for the major period of plant growth. The development of this technique will facilitate future investigations of the effect of heavy metals on plants.

The temperature dependence of the structure of the mixed-anion Tutton salt K-2[Cu(H2O)(6)](SO4)(2x)(SeO4)(2-2x) has been determined for crystals with 0, 17, 25, 68, 78, and 100% sulfate over the temperature range of 85-320 K. In every case, the [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) ion adopts a tetragonally elongated coordination geometry with an orthorhombic distortion. However, for the compounds with 0, 17, and 25% sulfate, the long and intermediate bonds occur on a different pair of water molecules from those with 68, 78, and 100% sulfate. A thermal equilibrium between the two forms is observed for each crystal, with this developing more readily as the proportions of the two counterions become more similar. Attempts to prepare a crystal with approximately equal amounts of sulfate and selenate were unsuccessful. The temperature dependence of the bond lengths has been analyzed using a model in which the Jahn-Teller potential surface of the [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) ion is perturbed by a lattice-strain interaction. The magnitude and sign of the orthorhombic component of this strain interaction depends on the proportion of sulfate to selenate. Significant deviations from Boltzmann statistics are observed for those crystals exhibiting a large temperature dependence of the average bond lengths, and this may be explained by cooperative interactions between neighboring complexes.
