We introduce three area preserving maps with phase space structures which resemble circle packings. Each mapping is derived from a kicked Hamiltonian system with one of the three different phase space geometries (planar, hyperbolic or spherical) and exhibits an infinite number of coexisting stable periodic orbits which appear to ‘pack’ the phase space with circular resonances.

Let T be a partial latin square and L be a latin square with T subset of L. We say that T is a latin trade if there exists a partial latin square T' with T' boolean AND T = theta such that (LT) U T' is a latin square. A k-homogeneous latin trade is one which intersects each row, each column and each entry either 0 or k times. In this paper, we construct 3-homogeneous latin trades from hexagonal packings of the plane with circles. We show that 3-homogeneous latin trades of size 3 m exist for each m >= 3. This paper discusses existence results for latin trades and provides a glueing construction which is subsequently used to construct all latin trades of finite order greater than three. A considerable body of literature suggests that significant psychological barrier and anxiety characterize the teaching and learning process in statistics. This study investigates the incidence of statistics anxiety, the extent to which it can be overcome and the factors that contribute to the process of overcoming it. Self-study and overall teaching quality, amongst others, significantly contributed to this outcome. This study identifies factors contributing to overall teaching quality. The teaching and learning process typified a highly effective communication mechanism based on an appropriate diagnosis of individual needs. This cumulative change resulted from circular causation. It is argued that given appropriate conditions the vicious circle of anxiety can be transformed into a virtuous circle of learning.

Adsorption of different aromatic compounds (two of them are electrolytes) onto an untreated activated carbon (F100) is investigated. The experimental isotherms are fitted into Langmuir homogenous and heterogeneous Model. Theoretical maximum adsorption capacities that are based on the BET surface area of the adsorbent cannot be close to the real value. The affinity and the heterogeneity of the adsorption system observed to be related to the pK(a) of the solutes. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q(max)) of activated carbon for each solute dependent on the molecular area as well as the type of functional group attached on the aromatic compound and also pH of solution. The arrangement of the molecules on the carbon surface is not face down. Furthermore, it is illustrated that the packing arrangement is most likely edge to face (sorbate-sorbent) with various tilt angles. For characterization of the carbon, the N-2 and CO2 adsorption were used. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurement was used to surface elemental analysis of activated carbon.

A maximum packing of any lambda-fold complete multipartite graph (where there are lambda edges between any two vertices in different parts) with edge-disjoint 4- cycles is obtained and the size of each minimum leave is given. Moreover, when lambda =2, maximum 4-cycle packings are found for all possible leaves.

Understanding the interlayer swelling and molecular packing in organoclays is important to the formation and design of polymer nanocomposites. This paper presents recent experimental and molecular simulation studies on a variety of organoclays that show a linear relationship between the increase of d-spacing and the mass ratio between organic and clay. A denser molecular packing is observed in organoclays containing surfactants with hydroxyl-ethyl units. Moreover, our simulation results show that the head (nitrogen) groups are essentially tethered to the clay surface while the long hydrocarbon chains tend to adopt a layering structure with disordered conformation, which contrasts with the previous assumptions of either the chains lying parallel to the clay surface or being tilted at rather precise angles. Based on a self-similar array model of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), the pore structure of SWNT bundles is analyzed and compared with that obtained from the conventional triangular model and adsorption experimental results. In addition to the well known cylindrical endo-cavities and interstitial pores, two types of newly defined pores with diameters of 2-10 and 8-100 nm are proposed, inter-bundle pores and inter-array pores. In particular, the relationship between the packing configuration of SWNTs and their pore structures is systematically investigated. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Ordered mesoporous materials show great importance in energy, environmental, and chemical engineering. The diffusion of guest species in mesoporous networks plays an important role in these applications, especially for energy storage, such as supercapacitors based on ordered mesoporous carbons ( OMCs). The ion diffusion behavior in two different 2-D hexagonal OMCs was investigated by using cyclic voltametry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In addition, transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen cryosorption methods were used to study the pore structure variations of these two OMCs. It was found that, for the OMC with defective pore channels ( termed as pore packing defects), the gravimetric capacitance was greatly decayed when the voltage scan rate was increased. The experimental results suggest that, for the ion diffusion in 2-D hexagonal OMCs with similar mesopore size distribution, the pore packing defect is a dominant dynamic factor.

In this work we investigate several important aspects of the structure theory of the recently introduced quasi-Hopf superalgebras (QHSAs), which play a fundamental role in knot theory and integrable systems. In particular we introduce the opposite structure and prove in detail (for the graded case) Drinfeld's result that the coproduct Delta ' =_ (S circle times S) (.) T (.) Delta (.) S-1 induced on a QHSA is obtained from the coproduct Delta by twisting. The corresponding "Drinfeld twist" F-D is explicitly constructed, as well as its inverse, and we investigate the complete QHSA associated with Delta '. We give a universal proof that the coassociator Phi ' = (S circle times S circle times S) Phi (321) and canonical elements alpha ' = S(beta), beta ' = S(alpha) correspond to twisting, the original coassociator Phi = Phi (123) and canonical elements alpha, beta with the Drinfeld twist F-D. Moreover in the quasi-tri angular case, it is shown algebraically that the R-matrix R ' = (S circle times S)R corresponds to twisting the original R-matrix R with F-D. This has important consequences in knot theory, which will be investigated elsewhere.

Representations of the non-semisimple superalgebra gl(2/2) in the standard basis are investigated by means of the vector coherent state method and boson-fermion realization. All finite-dimensional irreducible typical and atypical representations and lowest weight (indecomposable) Kac modules of gl(2/2) are constructed explicity through the explicit construction of all gl(2) circle plus gl(2) particle states (multiplets) in terms of boson and fermion creation operators in the super-Fock space. This gives a unified and complete treatment of finite-dimensional representations of gl(2/2) in explicit form, essential for the construction of primary fields of the corresponding current superalgebra at arbitrary level.
