Non-astringent persimmon is rapidly expanding as a new fruit crop in warm subtropical regions of the world, Most research and development of this fruit crop has occurred in Japan, where there is a considerable amount of published literature on its performance. Much of this information is not readily accessible to other countries and needs to be interpreted and modified for other climatic regions. This paper reviews reproductive events from floral initiation to the completion of fruit growth. The timing and significance of these events is described in relation to the phenological cycle. Method of improving flowering, reducing fruit drop and altering the fruit maturity period are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

P-representation techniques, which have been very successful in quantum optics and in other fields, are also useful for general bosonic quantum-dynamical many-body calculations such as Bose-Einstein condensation. We introduce a representation called the gauge P representation, which greatly widens the range of tractable problems. Our treatment results in an infinite set of possible time evolution equations, depending on arbitrary gauge functions that can be optimized for a given quantum system. In some cases, previous methods can give erroneous results, due to the usual assumption of vanishing boundary conditions being invalid for those particular systems. Solutions are given to this boundary-term problem for all the cases where it is known to occur: two-photon absorption and the single-mode laser. We also provide some brief guidelines on how to apply the stochastic gauge method to other systems in general, quantify the freedom of choice in the resulting equations, and make a comparison to related recent developments.

The recently discovered mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 was tested as an adsorbent for VOC removal. Its adsorption/desorption properties were evaluated and compared with other hydrophobic zeolites (silicalite-1 and zeolite Y) and a commercial activated carbon, BPL. The adsorption isotherms of some typical VOCs (benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and n-hexane) on MCM-41 are of type IV according to the IUPAC classification, drastically different from the other microporous adsorbents, indicating that VOCs, in the gas phase, have to be at high partial pressures in order to make the most of the new mesoporous material as an adsorbent for VOC removal. However, a proper modification of the pore openings of MCM-41 can change the isotherm types from type IV to type I without remarkable loss of the accessible pare volumes and, therefore, significantly enhance the adsorption performance at low partial pressures. Adsorption isotherms of water on these adsorbents are all of type V, demonstrating that they possess a similar hydrophobicity. Desorption of VOCs from MCM-41 could be achieved at lower temperatures (50-60 degrees C), while this had to be conducted at higher temperatures (100-120 degrees C) for microporous adsorbents, zeolites, and activated carbons.

The electron transfer protein rubredoxin from Clostridium pasteurianum contains an Fe(S-Cys)(4) active site. Mutant proteins C9G, C9A, C42G and C42A, in which cysteine ligands are replaced by non-ligating Gly or Ala residues, have been expressed in Escherichia coli. The C42A protein expresses with a (Fe2S2)-S-III cluster in place. In contrast, the other proteins are isolated in colourless forms, although a (Fe2S2)-S-III cluster may be assembled in the C42G protein via incubation with Fe-III and sulfide. The four mutant proteins were isolated as stable mononuclear Hg-II forms which were converted to unstable mononuclear Fe-III preparations that contain both holo and apo protein. The Fe-III systems were characterized by metal analysis and mass spectrometry and by electronic, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopies. The dominant Fe-III form in the C9A preparation is a Fe(S-Cys)(3)(OH) centre, similar to that observed previously in the C6S mutant protein. Related centres are present in the proteins NifU and IscU responsible for assembly and repair of iron-sulfur clusters in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. In addition to Fe(S-Cys)(3)(OH) centres, the C9G, C42G and C42A preparations contain a second four-coordinate Fe-III form in which a ligand appears to be supplied by the protein chain. Background and Objectives: A number of familial temporal lobe epilepsies (TLE) have been recently recognized. Mutations in LGI1 (leucine-rich, glioma-inactivated 1 gene) have been found in a few families with the syndrome of autosomal dominant partial epilepsy with auditory features (ADPEAF). The authors aimed to determine the spectrum of TLE phenotypes with LGI1 mutations, to study the frequency of mutations in ADPEAF, and to examine the role of LGI1 paralogs in ADPEAF without LGI1 mutations. Methods: The authors performed a clinical and molecular analysis on 75 pedigrees comprising 54 with a variety of familial epilepsies associated with TLE and 21 sporadic TLE cases. All were studied for mutations in LGI1. ADPEAF families negative for LGI1 mutations were screened for mutations in LGI2, LGI3, and LGI4. Results: Four families had ADPEAF, 22 had mesial TLE, 11 had TLE with febrile seizures, two had TLE with developmental abnormalities, and 15 had various other TLE syndromes. LGI1 mutations were found in two of four ADPEAF families, but in none of the other 50 families nor in the 21 individuals with sporadic TLE. The mutations were novel missense mutations in exons 1 (c. 124T --> G; C42G) and 8 (c. 1418C --> T; S473L). No mutations in LGI2, LGI3, or LGI4 were found in the other two ADPEAF families. Conclusion: In TLE, mutations in LGI1 are specific for ADPEAF but do not occur in all families. ADPEAF is genetically heterogeneous, but mutations in LGI2, LGI3, or LGI4 did not account for families without LGI1 mutations.

High removal rate (up to 16.6 mm(3)/s per mm) grinding of alumina and alumina-titania was investigated with respect to material removal and basic grinding parameters using a resin-bond 160 mu m grit diamond wheel at the speeds of 40 and 160 m/s, respectively. The results show that the material removal for the single-phase polycrystalline alumina and the two-phase alumina-titania composite revealed identical mechanisms of microfracture and grain dislodgement under the grinding conditioned selected. There were no distinct differences in surface roughness and morphology for both materials ground at either conventional or high speed. An increase in material removal rate did not necessarily worsen the surface toughness for the two materials at both speeds. Also the grinding forces for the two ceramics demonstrated similar characteristics at any grinding speeds and specific removal rates. Both normal and tangential grinding forces and their force ratios at the high speed were lower than those at the conventional speed, regardless of removal rates. An increase in specific removal rate caused more rapid increases in normal and tangential forces obtained at the conventional grinding speed than those at the high speed. Furthermore, it is found that the high speed grinding at all the removal rates exerted a great amount of coolant-induced normal forces in grinding zone, which were 4-6 times higher than the pure normal grinding forces. In the course of daily living, humans frequently encounter situations in which a motor activity, once initiated, becomes unnecessary or inappropriate. Under such circumstances, the ability to inhibit motor responses can be of vital importance. Although the nature of response inhibition has been studied in psychology for several decades, its neural basis remains unclear. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, we found that temporary deactivation of the pars opercularis in the right inferior frontal gyrus selectively impairs the ability to stop an initiated action. Critically, deactivation of the same region did not affect the ability to execute responses, nor did it influence physiological arousal. These findings confirm and extend recent reports that the inferior frontal gyrus is vital for mediating response inhibition.

The batch removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(Vl)) from wastewater under different experimental conditions using economic adsorbents was investigated in this study. These adsorbents were produced from the pyrolysis and activation of the waste tyres (TAC) and from the pyrolysis of sawdust (SPC). The performance of these adsorbents against commercial activated carbon F400 (CAC) has also been carried out. The removal was favoured at low pH, with maximum removal at pH = 2 for all types of carbon. The effects of concentration, temperature and particle size have been reported. All sorbents were found to efficiently remove Cr(VI) from solution. The batch sorption kinetics have been tested for a first-order reversible reaction, a first-order and second-order reaction. The rate constants of adsorption for all these kinetic models have been calculated. The applicability of the Langmuir isotherm for the present system has been tested at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters (AGO, K,) obtained indicate the endothermic nature of Cr(Vl) adsorption on TAC, SPC and CAC. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
