Three main models of parameter setting have been proposed: the Variational model proposed by Yang (2002; 2004), the Structured Acquisition model endorsed by Baker (2001; 2005), and the Very Early Parameter Setting (VEPS) model advanced by Wexler (1998). The VEPS model contends that parameters are set early. The Variational model supposes that children employ statistical learning mechanisms to decide among competing parameter values, so this model anticipates delays in parameter setting when critical input is sparse, and gradual setting of parameters. On the Structured Acquisition model, delays occur because parameters form a hierarchy, with higher-level parameters set before lower-level parameters. Assuming that children freely choose the initial value, children sometimes will miss-set parameters. However when that happens, the input is expected to trigger a precipitous rise in one parameter value and a corresponding decline in the other value. We will point to the kind of child language data that is needed in order to adjudicate among these competing models.

Power system real time security assessment is one of the fundamental modules of the electricity markets. Typically, when a contingency occurs, it is required that security assessment and enhancement module shall be ready for action within about 20 minutes’ time to meet the real time requirement. The recent California black out again highlighted the importance of system security. This paper proposed an approach for power system security assessment and enhancement based on the information provided from the pre-defined system parameter space. The proposed scheme opens up an efficient way for real time security assessment and enhancement in a competitive electricity market for single contingency case

Human N-acetyltransferase type 1 (NAT1) catalyses the N- or O-acetylation of various arylamine and heterocyclic amine substrates and is able to bioactivate several known carcinogens. Despite wide inter-individual variability in activity, historically, NAT1 was considered to be monomorphic in nature. However, recent reports of allelic variation at the NAT1 locus suggest that it may be a polymorphically expressed enzyme. In the present study, peripheral blood mononuclear cell NAT1 activity in 85 individuals was found to be bimodally distributed with approximately 8% of the population being slow acetylators. Subsequent sequencing of the individuals having slow acetylator status showed all to have either a (CT)-T-190 or G(560)A base substitution located in the protein encoding region of the NAT1 gene. The (CT)-T-190 base substitution changed a highly conserved Arg(64), which others have shown to be essential for fully functional NAT1 protein. The (CT)-T-190 mutation has not been reported previously and we have named it NAT1*17. The G(560)A mutation is associated with the base substitutions previously observed in the NAT1*10 allele and this variant (NAT1*14) encodes for a protein with reduced acetylation capacity. A novel method using linear PCR and dideoxy terminators was developed for the detection of NAT1*14 and NAT1*17. Neither of these variants was found in the rapid acetylator population. We conclude that both the (CT)-T-190 (NAT1*17) and G(560)A (NAT1*14) NAT1 structural variants are involved in a distinct NAT1 polymorphism. Because NAT1 can bioactivate several carcinogens, this polymorphism may have implications for cancer risk in individual subjects. (C) 1998 Chapman & Hall Ltd.

A new two-parameter integrable model with quantum superalgebra U-q[gl(3/1)] symmetry is proposed, which is an eight-state fermions model with correlated single-particle and pair hoppings as well as uncorrelated triple-particle hopping. The model is solved and the Bethe ansatz equations are obtained.

Background: Concerns exist regarding the effect of radiation dose from paediatric pelvic CT scans and the potential later risk of radiation-induced neoplasm and teratogenic outcomes in these patients. Objective: To assess the diagnostic quality of CT images of the paediatric pelvis using either reduced mAs or increased pitch compared with standard settings. Materials and methods: A prospective study of pelvic CT scans of 105 paediatric patients was performed using one of three protocols: (1) 31 at a standard protocol of 200 mA with rotation time of 0.75 s at 120 kVp and a pitch factor approximating 1.4; (2) 31 at increased pitch factor approaching 2 and 200 mA; and (3) 43 at a reduced setting of 100 mA and a pitch factor of 1.4. All other settings remained the same in all three groups. Image quality was assessed by radiologists blinded to the protocol used in each scan. Results: No significant difference was found between the quality of images acquired at standard settings and those acquired at half the standard mAs. The use of increased pitch factor resulted in a higher proportion of poor images. Conclusions: Images acquired at 120 kVp using 75 mAs are equivalent in diagnostic quality to those acquired at 150 mAs. Reduced settings can provide useful imaging of the paediatric pelvis and should be considered as a standard protocol in these situations.

The problem of the negative values of the interaction parameter in the equation of Frumkin has been analyzed with respect to the adsorption of nonionic molecules on energetically homogeneous surface. For this purpose, the adsorption states of a homologue series of ethoxylated nonionic surfactants on air/water interface have been determined using four different models and literature data (surface tension isotherms). The results obtained with the Frumkin adsorption isotherm imply repulsion between the adsorbed species (corresponding to negative values of the interaction parameter), while the classical lattice theory for energetically homogeneous surface (e.g., water/air) admits attraction alone. It appears that this serious contradiction can be overcome by assuming heterogeneity in the adsorption layer, that is, effects of partial condensation (formation of aggregates) on the surface. Such a phenomenon is suggested in the Fainerman-Lucassen-Reynders-Miller (FLM) 'Aggregation model'. Despite the limitations of the latter model (e.g., monodispersity of the aggregates), we have been able to estimate the sign and the order of magnitude of Frumkin's interaction parameter and the range of the aggregation numbers of the surface species. We explore the task of optimal quantum channel identification and in particular, the estimation of a general one-parameter quantum process. We derive new characterizations of optimality and apply the results to several examples including the qubit depolarizing channel and the harmonic oscillator damping channel. We also discuss the geometry of the problem and illustrate the usefulness of using entanglement in process estimation.

Our aim was to determine whether antenatal corticosteroids improve perinatal adaptation of the pulmonary circulation in lambs with lung hypoplasia (LH). LH was induced in 12 ovine fetuses between 105 and 140 days gestation (term similar to 147 days); in 6 of these the ewe was given a single dose of betamethasone (11.4 mg im) 24 hr before delivery (LH + B). All lambs, including a control group (n = 6), were delivered at similar to 140 days and ventilated for 2 hr during which arterial pressures, pulmonary blood flow (PBF), and ventilating pressure and flow were recorded. During ventilation, respiratory system compliance was lower in both LH + B and LH groups than in controls. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) was lower in LH + B lambs than in LH lambs and similar to controls; PBF was reduced in LH lambs but was restored to control levels by betamethasone. The mean density of small arteries of LH + B lambs was similar to that of LH lambs (P = 0.06) and lower than in controls; the thickness of the media of small pulmonary arteries from LH + B lambs was similar to that in LH lambs and thicker than in controls. VEGF mRNA levels were not different between groups. PDGF mRNA levels in LH + B lambs were higher than in LH lambs; a similar trend (P = 0.06) was seen for PECAM-1. SP-C mRNA levels were greater in both LH and LH + B lambs than in controls. Effects of betamethasone were greater on indices of pulmonary circulation than ventilation. We conclude that a single dose of maternal betamethasone 24 hr prior to birth has significant favorable effects on the postnatal adaptation of the pulmonary circulation in lambs with LH.

The concept of parameter-space size adjustment is pn,posed in order to enable successful application of genetic algorithms to continuous optimization problems. Performance of genetic algorithms with six different combinations of selection and reproduction mechanisms, with and without parameter-space size adjustment, were severely tested on eleven multiminima test functions. An algorithm with the best performance was employed for the determination of the model parameters of the optical constants of Pt, Ni and Cr.

Numerical optimisation methods are being more commonly applied to agricultural systems models, to identify the most profitable management strategies. The available optimisation algorithms are reviewed and compared, with literature and our studies identifying evolutionary algorithms (including genetic algorithms) as superior in this regard to simulated annealing, tabu search, hill-climbing, and direct-search methods. Results of a complex beef property optimisation, using a real-value genetic algorithm, are presented. The relative contributions of the range of operational options and parameters of this method are discussed, and general recommendations listed to assist practitioners applying evolutionary algorithms to the solution of agricultural systems. We detail the automatic construction of R matrices corresponding to (the tensor products of) the (O-m\alpha(n)) families of highest-weight representations of the quantum superalgebras Uq[gl(m\n)]. These representations are irreducible, contain a free complex parameter a, and are 2(mn)-dimensional. Our R matrices are actually (sparse) rank 4 tensors, containing a total of 2(4mn) components, each of which is in general an algebraic expression in the two complex variables q and a. Although the constructions are straightforward, we describe them in full here, to fill a perceived gap in the literature. As the algorithms are generally impracticable for manual calculation, we have implemented the entire process in MATHEMATICA; illustrating our results with U-q [gl(3\1)]. Survival of bone marrow transplant recipients requiting mechanical ventilation is poor but improving. This study reports a retrospective audit of all haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients requiring mechanical ventilation at an Australian institution over a period spanning 11 years from 1988 to 1998. Recipients of autologous transplants are significantly less likely to require mechanical ventilation than recipients of allogeneic transplants. Of 50 patients requiring mechanical ventilation, 28% survived to discharge from the intensive care unit, 20% to 30 days post-ventilation, 18% to discharge from hospital and 12% to six months post-ventilation. Risk factors for mortality in the HSCT recipient requiting mechanical ventilation include renal, hepatic and cardiovascular insufficiency and greater severity of illness. Mechanical ventilation of HSCT recipients should not be regarded as futile therapy.
