Approximately 15% of a population of the cryopelagic nototheniid fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki, found constantly swimming immediately beneath the annual fast ice, in McMudro Sound. Ross Sea, Antarctica, was affected by X-cell gill disease. This disease affected blood flow through the gill lamellae, and this in turn affected oxygen uptake. Exercise caused increases in heart rate and ventral aortic blood pressure. Heart rate increased from 15.1 +/- 1.55 to 23.1 +/- 0.93 beats min(-1) in healthy fish, with a similar increase from 15.1 +/- 1.55 to 23.1 +/- 0.93 beats min(-1) in healthy fish, with a similar increase (to 24.6 +/- 0.26 beats min(-1)) in X-cell-affected animals. In healthy fish, pressures rose with exercise (from 2.72 +/- 0.11 to 3.75 +/- 0.19 kPa) and then rapidly returned to resting levels during recovery. In X-cell fish pressures rose during exercise, but then continued to rise, to reach a high of 4.18 +/- 0.13 kPa, close to the predicted maximum pressure able to be generated by these hearts. Recovery was rapid in healthy fish, but was prolonged in diseased animals. As they are constantly swimming, there is the potential that X-cell-affected fish suffer from chronic hypertension. In the European lesser-spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula, rectal gland mass in mg (M-Rg) followed the allometric relationship: M-Rg = 1.15 M-0.68, where M is body mass (g). The concept of allometric scaling is an important consideration in studies investigating the function Of osmoregulatory organs. (C) 2003 the Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

Three different cone photoreceptor visual pigments in the retina of striped marlin Tetrapturus audax were found with the aid of microspectrophotometry. This provides the first evidence for the basis of colour vision in the Istiophoridae. Furthermore, regional variations in photoreceptor density, type and spatial arrangement indicate differing visual capabilities along different visual axes. Using multiple-choice feeding experiments, the selection of six species of macrophytes by the herbivorous rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens was examined. The rabbitfish showed distinct food choice in the laboratory; however, selection of macrophytes by S. fuscescens was not related to their absolute nutrient content (nitrogen, carbon, energy and ash free dry mass). Nutrient assimilation estimates showed that the macrophytes which were most preferred were those that S. fuscescens assimilated best. In S. fuscescens, the macrophytes that were preferred passed through the gut significantly faster than the less preferred species. Gut transit time had a significant effect on the absolute value of a food item in terms of net nutrient gain per unit time. This study showed that food value could be inferred from the absolute nutrient content of the macrophytes. Thus both the ability to assimilate nutrients as well as the absolute nutrient content of macrophytes must be quantified when assessing food value. At Heron Island reef, Great Barrier Reef Australia, biomass densities and mean wet mass of Ward's damselfish Pomacentrus wardi and the jewelled blenny Salarias fasciatus were not significantly different at 2-37 v. 2-95 g m(-2) and 8-7 v. 7-9 g, respectively. Whereas S. fasciatus significantly exceeded P. wardi in (1) total number of bites per day (3427 v. 1155), (2) the mass of epilithic algal community consumed per bite (2-19 1,. 0-14mg) and (3) total organic carbon consumed per day (487-31 v. 35-46 mg C m(-2) day(-1)). Territorial behaviour differed also between the two species. Pomacentrus wardi chased from their territories a smaller proportion of blennies than roving grazers (i.e. scarids, acanthurids, siganids and pomacentrids) relative to S. fasciatus. Salarias fasciatus chased c. 90% of other blennies from their territories, while chasing only c. 20% of all damsels that entered. Both P. wardi and S. fasciatus rarely chased non-grazers. The chasing behaviour of S. fascialus was size dependent, with resident fish chasing only individuals of its own family (i.e. Blenniidae) that were the same or smaller size. Pomacentrus wardi may have tolerated S. fasciatus grazing within its territory, as it contributes to territory defence from other blennies. The possibility that the interaction between the two species is facilitative, rather than competitive, is discussed. It was concluded that salariine blennies play an important, and previously underestimated role in coral reef trophodynamics. (C) 2004 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

Captive Hemigymnus melapterus exposed to large numbers of cultured juvenile parasitic isopods (Gnathia sp.) had significantly lower haematocrit (median 27-62% +/- 5-83% inter-quartile range) than uninfected, control fish (median 32-73% +/- 4-90%). This study is the first to show that juvenile Gnathia sp. reduce total blood volume in H. melapterus. The low haematocrit in infected fish was most likely due to plasma replacing erythrocytes lost as a result of isopods feeding on fish blood. (c) 2005 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

The stable isotope values for a range of size classes of Hyporhamphus regularis ardelio from Moreton Bay, south-east Australia were determined. There was a positive linear relationship between 613 C and standard length (L-s) (delta(13)C = 0.034 Ls - 16-23; r(2) = 0.78). delta(13)C ranged from -8.48 to - 17.29 parts per thousand with the smallest size class (50 mm Ls) being on average 1.04 parts per thousand enriched with respect to that of zooplankton (Temora turbinata) and 7.97 parts per thousand depleted compared to Zostera capricorni. delta(13)C was positively correlated with Ls (P 0.0 1) with delta(15) N, ranging from 9.18 to 11.00 parts per thousand. Fish of all size classes were on average 2.32 and 7.63 parts per thousand more enriched than zooplankton and seagrass, respectively. Carbon isotope data indicate that H. r. ardelio commence life as carnivores and change to a diet in which seagrass is the primary carbon source. The dependence on animal matter, however, is always present. Due to the low percentage of nitrogen in Z. capricorni (2.5%) compared to zooplankton (9.1%) it appears that nitrogen from zooplankton is necessary throughout their life history with the carbon requirements for these fish coming chiefly from Z. capricorni. Rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens preferences for Lyngbya majuscula collected from three bloom locations in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, were tested along with a range of local plant species in the laboratory. Consumption of L. majuscula by fish did not differ between wild and captive-bred fish (P = 0.152) but did differ between bloom location (P = 0.039). No relationship was found between consumption rates and lyngbyatoxin-a concentration (r(2) = 0.035, P = 0.814). No correlation existed between C : N and proportion of food consumed when all food types were analysed statistically, whereas a clear correlation was observed when L. majuscula was removed from the calculations. In simulated bloom conditions, fish avoided ingestion of L. majuscula by feeding through gaps in the L. majuscula coverage. Both wild and captive-bred S. fuscescens showed a distinct feeding pattern in 10 day no-choice feeding assays, with less L. majuscula being consumed than the preferred red alga Acanthophora spicifera. Lyngbya majuscula however, was consumed in equal quantities to A. spicifera by wild S. fuscescens when lyngbyatoxin-a was not detectable. Wild fish probably do not preferentially feed on L. majuscula when secondary metabolites are present and are not severely impacted by large L. majuscula blooms in Moreton Bay. Furthermore, poor feeding performance in both captive-bred and wild S. fuscescens suggests that they would exert little pressure as a top-down control agent of toxic L. majuscula blooms within Moreton Bay. From the record of dinosaurian skeletal remains it has been inferred that the origin and initial diversification of dinosaurs were rapid events, occupying an interval of about 5 million years in the Late Triassic. By contrast numerous reports of dinosauroid tracks imply that the emergence of dinosaurs was a more protracted affair extending through much of the Early and Middle Triassic. This study finds no convincing evidence of dinosaur tracks before the late Ladinian. Each of the three dinosaurian clades - Theropoda, Sauropodomorpha, Ornithischia - produced a unique track morphotype that appears to be an independent modification of the chirotherioid pattern attributed to stem-group archosaurs (thecodontian reptiles). The existence of three divergent track morphotypes is consistent with the concept of dinosaurian polyphyly but can be reconciled with the hypothesis of dinosaurian monophyly only by invoking many and rapid reversals in the locomotor anatomy of early dinosaurs. The origin of dinosaurs was not the correlate or consequence of any single event or process, be it global change, competitive replacement, or opportunism in the wake of mass extinction. Instead the origin of dinosaurs is envisaged as a series of three cladogenetic events over an interval of at least 10 million years and possibly as much as 25 million years. This scenario of dinosaurian polyphyly is as well-supported by fossil evidence as is the currently favoured view of dinosaurian monophyly.

The parasite fauna of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson from three regions off eastern Australia was examined for evidence of separate stocks. The abundance of five metacestodes was very similar in all areas suggesting that extensive mixing of the fish occurs along the coast, unlike the Situation across northern Australia where large differences have been found between regions. The similarity in abundances of two metacestodes from Townsville fish and south-east Queensland fish Suggests that these two regions have fish with very similar histories. The data lead to the conclusion that the seasonal fishery for Spanish mackerel off south-east Queensland is based on a random group of fish from the same origin as fish sampled off Townsville and is not a subpopulation that moves south each year.
