Wet agglomeration processes have traditionally been considered an empirical art, with great difficulties in predicting and explaining observed behaviour. Industry has faced a range of problems including large recycle ratios, poor product quality control, surging and even the total failure of scale up from laboratory to full scale production. However, in recent years there has been a rapid advancement in our understanding of the fundamental processes that control granulation behaviour and product properties. This review critically evaluates the current understanding of the three key areas of wet granulation processes: wetting and nucleation, consolidation and growth, and breakage and attrition. Particular emphasis is placed on the fact that there now exist theoretical models which predict or explain the majority of experimentally observed behaviour. Provided that the correct material properties and operating parameters are known, it is now possible to make useful predictions about how a material will granulate. The challenge that now faces us is to transfer these theoretical developments into industrial practice. Standard, reliable methods need to be developed to measure the formulation properties that control granulation behaviour, such as contact angle and dynamic yield strength. There also needs to be a better understanding of the flow patterns, mixing behaviour and impact velocities in different types of granulation equipment. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. MSS membranes are a good candidate for CO cleanup in fuel cell fuel processing systems due to their ability to selectively permeate H2 over CO via molecular sieving. Successfully scaled up tubular membranes were stable under dry conditions to 400°C with H2 permeance as high as 2 x 10-6 mol.m-2.s^-1.Pa^-1 at 200 degrees C and H2/CO selectivity up to 6.4, indicating molecular sieving was the dominant mechanism. A novel carbonised template molecular sieve silica (CTMSS) technology gave the scaled up membranes resilience in hydrothermal conditions up to 400 degrees C in 34% steam and synthetic reformate, which is required for use in fuel cell CO cleanup systems.

This review reflects the state of the art in study of contact and dynamic phenomena occurring in cold roll forming. The importance of taking these phenomena into account is determined by significant machine time and tooling costs spent on worn out forming rolls replacement and equipment adjustment in cold roll forming. Predictive modelling of the tool wear caused by contact and dynamic phenomena can reduce the production losses in this technological process.

The recently determined crystal structure of the PR65/A subunit of protein phosphatase 2A reveals the architecture of proteins containing HEAT repeats, The structural properties of this solenoid protein explain many functional characteristics and account for the involvement of solenoids as scaffold, anchoring and adaptor proteins.

Objective: To compare the Barthel Index (BI), a well-known and accepted measure of functional disability, with Timed Up and Go (TUG). Method: Thirty-three stroke patients had their BI and TUG assessed by independent blinded observers. Results: There was good agreement between BI and TUG, with good repeatability. Conclusion: Thus TUG is a good measure of function pre-discharge but needs to be further validated on more disabled patients.

Eighty one percent of a sample of long-term cannabis users was followed up at 1 year (162/200). Half (51%) were daily smokers, while 20% had substantially decreased or ceased use. More than half received a dependence diagnosis on each of three measures in the last year, with 44% dependent on all three. Remission was much more common than incidence of dependence. Nevertheless, use and dependence patterns were strongly related over time. Longitudinal analyses revealed that quantity of use and severity of dependence at baseline were the primary predictors of those same variables at follow-up. These data suggest that cannabis use and dependence are fairly stable among long-term users. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Early intervention for hazardous alcohol use has been shown repeatedly to be effective in reducing alcohol consumption, limiting alcohol-related problems and improving biochemical parameters. However, in most studies the follow-up period has been 2 years or less. The current paper presents progress on a 10-year follow-up of a randomized controlled trial of early intervention. Methods used for tracing subjects and ensuring minimal refusals are detailed. The intensity of effort required to locate subjects is documented and recommendations for ensuring good follow-up rates are made. At completion of follow-up, 72.5% of the sample reviewed here and 78.2% of the total cohort had been traced. Our experiences demonstrate that long-term follow-up is feasible, given sufficient planning and persistence.
