Study Objective: Community-based models for injury prevention have become an accepted part of the overall injury control strategy. This systematic review of the scientific literature examines the evidence for their effectiveness in reducing injury due to inadequate car seat restraint use in children 0-16 years of age. Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature was performed using the following study selection criteria: community-based intervention study: target population was children aged 0-16 years of age; outcome measure was either injury rates due to motor vehicle crashes or observed changes in child restraint use; and use of community control or historical control in the study design. Quality assessment and data abstraction was guided by a standardized procedure and performed independently by two authors. Data synthesis was in tabular and text form with meta-analysis not being possible due to the discrepancy in methods and measures between the studies. Results: This review found eight studies, that met all the inclusion criteria. In the studies that measured injury outcomes, significant reductions in risk of motor vehicle occupant injury (33-55%) were reported in the study communities. For those studies reporting observed car seat restraint use the community-based programs were successful in increasing toddler restraint use in 1-5 year aged children by up to 11%; child booster seat use in 4-8 year aged children by up to 13%; rear restraint use in children aged 0-15 years by 8%; a 50% increase in restraint use in pre-school aged children in a high-risk community; and a 44% increase in children aged 5-11 years. Conclusion: While this review highlights that there is some evidence to support the effectiveness of community-based programs to promote car restraint use and/or motor vehicle occupant injury, limitations in the evaluation methodologies of the studies requires the results to be interpreted with caution. As class contact times are reduced as a result of fiscal restraints in the modern tertiary sector, language instructors are placed in the position of having to find new ways to provide experience and continuity in language learning. Extending 'learning communities'—sites of learner knowledge exchange, exposure to diverse learning styles and strategies, and mutual support—beyond the classroom is one solution to maintaining successful linguistic competencies amongst learners. This, however, can conflict with the diverse extra-curricular commitments faced by tertiary students. The flexibility of web-based learning platforms provides one means of overcoming these obstacles. This study investigates learner perceptions of the use of the WebCT platform's computer medicated communication (CMC) tools as a means of extending the community of learning in tertiary Chinese language and non-language courses. Learner responses to Likert and open-ended questionnaires show that flexibility and reduction of negative affect are seen as significant benefits to 'virtual' interaction and communication, although responses are notably stronger in the non-language compared with the language cohort. While both learner cohorts acknowledge positive learning outcomes, CMC is not seen to consistently further interpersonal rapport beyond that established in the classroom. Maintaining a balance between web-based and classroom learning emerges as a concern, especially amongst language learners. [Author abstract, ed]

Alpha helices are key structural components of proteins and important recognition motifs in biology. New techniques for stabilizing short peptide helices could be valuable for studying protein folding, modeling proteins, creating artificial proteins, and may aid the design of inhibitors or mimics of protein function. We previously reported* that 5-15 residue peptides, corresponding to the Zn-binding domain of thermolysin, react with [Pd(en)(ONO,),]in DMF-d’ and 90% H,O 10% DzO to form a 22-membered [Pd(en)(H*ELTH*)]2+ macrocycle that is helical in solution and acts as a template in nucleating helicity in both Cand N- terminal directions within the longer sequences in DMF. ~f~~&g7$$& d&qx~m ~. y AC&q& In water, however, there was less a-helicity observed, testifying to #..q,& &$--Lb &l-- &.$;,J~p?:~~q&~+~~ ’ w w the difficulty of fixing intramolecular amide NH...OC H-bonds in 6,“;;” ( k.$ U”C.a , p d$. competition with the H-bond donor solvent water. To expand the utility of [Pd(en)(H*XXXH*)]*+ as a helix- @r4”8 & oJ#:& &G& @-qd ,‘d@-gyp promoting module in solution, we now report the result that Ac- ‘$4: %$yyy + H*ELTH*H*VTDH*-NH,(l), AC-H*ELTH*AVTDYH*ELTH*- NH, (2) and AC-H*AAAH*H*ELTH*H*VTDH*-NH* (3) react with multiple equivalents of [Pd(en)(ONO,),] to produce exclusively 4-6 respectively in both DMF-d7 and water (90% Hz0 10% D,O). Mass spectrometry, 15N- and 2D ‘H- NMR spectroscopy, and CD spectra were used to characterise the structures 4-6, and their three dimensional structures were calculated from NOE restraints using simulated annealing protocols. Results demonstrate (a) selective coordination of metal ions at (i, i+4) histidine positions in water and DMF, (b) incorporation of 2 and 3 a turn-mimicking modules [Pd(en)(HELTH)]2+ in lo-15 residue peptides, and (c) facile conversion of unstructured peptides into 3- and 4- turn helices of macrocycles, with well defined a-helicity throughout and more structure in DMF than in water.
