A new method for ameliorating high-field image distortion caused by radio frequency/tissue interaction is presented and modeled, The proposed method uses, but is not restricted to, a shielded four-element transceive phased array coil and involves performing two separate scans of the same slice with each scan using different excitations during transmission. By optimizing the amplitudes and phases for each scan, antipodal signal profiles can be obtained, and by combining both images together, the image distortion can be reduced several-fold. A hybrid finite-difference time-domain/method-of-moments method is used to theoretically demonstrate the method and also to predict the radio frequency behavior inside the human head. in addition, the proposed method is used in conjunction with the GRAPPA reconstruction technique to enable rapid imaging. Simulation results reported herein for IIT (470 MHz) brain imaging applications demonstrate the feasibility of the concept where multiple acquisitions using parallel imaging elements with GRAPPA reconstruction results in improved image quality. We describe the production of BECs on a new type of atom chip based on silver foil. Our atom chip is fabricated with thick wires capable of carrying currents of several amperes without overheating. The silver surface is highly reflective to light resonant with optical transitions used for Rb. The pattern on the chip consists of two parallel Z-trap wires, capable of producing two-wire guide, and two additional endcap wires for varying the axial confinement. Condensates are produced in magnetic microtraps formed within 1 mm of surface of the chip. We have observed the fragmentation of cold atom clouds when brought close to the chip surface. This results from a perturbed trapping potential caused by nanometer deviations of the current path through the wires on the chip. We present results of fragmentation of cold clouds at distances below 100 µm from the wires and investigate the origin of the deviating current. The fragmentation has different characteristics to those seen with copper conductors. The dynamics of atoms in these microtraps is also investigated. ©2005 COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. The Asparagus officinalis L. asparagine (Asn) synthetase (AS) promoter was analysed for elements responding to carbohydrate and senescence signals. Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana L. plants containing deletion constructs of the –1958 bp AS promoter linked to the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene (AS::GUS) were analysed by measuring GUS specific activity. Inclusion of sucrose (Suc), glucose (Glc) or fructose (Fru) in plant media repressed levels of GUS activity in –1958AS::GUS plants, regardless of the light environment, with increases in GUS found 1 d after incubation on Suc-lacking media. Hexokinase is likely to be involved in the signal pathway, as Suc, Glc, Fru, 2-deoxy-d-glucose and mannose were more effective repressors than 3-O-methylglucose, and the hexokinase inhibitor mannoheptulose reduced repression. Plants containing AS::GUS constructs with deletions that reduced the promoter to less than –405 bp did not show low sugar induction. AS::GUS activity was significantly higher in excised leaves induced to senesce by dark storage for 24 h, compared to fresh leaves, for lines containing at least –640 bp of the AS promoter but not those with –523 bp or smaller promoter fragments. Fusion of the –640 to –523 bp region to a –381AS::GUS construct generated a promoter that retained senescence induction but lacked low sugar induction. Alignment of this region to the 33-bp senescence-related sequence of the Arabidopsis and Brassica napus L. SAG12 promoters identified the sequence TTGCACG as being conserved in all the promoters, and which may be an important senescence-responsive element.

We investigate the effect of transmitter and receiver array configurations on the stray-light and diffraction-caused crosstalk in free-space optical interconnects. The optical system simulation software (Code V) is used to simulate both the stray-light and diffraction-caused crosstalk. Experimentally measured, spectrally-resolved, near-field images of VCSEL higher order modes were used as extended sources in our simulation model. Our results show that by changing the square lattice geometry to a hexagonal configuration, we obtain the reduction in the stray-light crosstalk of up to 9 dB and an overall signal-to-noise ratio improvement of 3 dB.

A phased-array antenna with switched-beam elements used to combat interference in an indoor wireless communication system is described. The array uses I-bit phase shifters applied to its elements in order to point its main beam in a desired direction and internal switching of elements in order to form nulls towards interference. The array's capability of suppressing interference is verified by studying its radiation patterns and by performing interference-rejection experiments in an indoor multipath environment. This letter presents an analytical model for evaluating the Bit Error Rate (BER) of a Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) system, with M-ary orthogonal modulation and noncoherent detection, employing an array antenna operating in a Nakagami fading environment. An expression of the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) at the output of the receiver is derived, which allows the BER to be evaluated using a closed form expression. The analytical model is validated by comparing the obtained results with simulation results.

This article presents an array antenna with beam-steering capability in azimuth over a wide frequency band using real-valued weighting coefficients that can be realized in practice by amplifiers or attenuators. The described beamforming scheme relies on a 2D (instead of 1D) array structure in order to make sure that there are enough degrees of freedom to realize a given radiation pattern in both the angular and frequency domains. In the presented approach, weights are determined using an inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) technique by neglecting the mutual coupling between array elements. Because of the presence of mutual coupling, the actual array produces a radiation pattern with increased side-lobe levels. In order to counter this effect, the design aims to realize the initial radiation pattern with a lower side-lobe level. This strategy is demonstrated in the design example of 4 X 4 element array. Iodine-doped (I-doped) mesoporous titania with a bicrystalline (anatase and rutile) framework was synthesized by a two-step template hydrothermal synthesis route. I-doped titania with anatase structure was also synthesized without the use of a block copolymer as a template. The resultant titania samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. Both I-doped titania samples, with and without template, show much better photocatalytic activity than commercial P25 titania in the photodegradation of methylene blue under the irradiation of visible light (> 420 nm) and UV-visible light. Furthermore, I-doped mesoporous titania with a bicrystalline framework exhibits better activity than I-doped titania with anatase structure. The effect of rutile phase in titania on the adsorptive capacity of water and surface hydroxyl, and photocatalytic activity was investigated in detail. The excellent performance of I-doped mesoporous titania under both visible light and UV-visible light can be attributed to the combined effects of bicrystalline framework, high crystallinity, large surface area, mesoporous structure, and high visible light absorption induced by I-doping.

Quality of life has been shown to be poor among people living with chronic hepatitis C However, it is not clear how this relates to the presence of symptoms and their severity. The aim of this study was to describe the typology of a broad array of symptoms that were attributed to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Phase I used qualitative methods to identify symptoms. In Phase 2, 188 treatment-naive people living with HCV participated in a quantitative survey. The most prevalent symptom was physical tiredness (86%) followed by irritability (75%), depression (70%), mental tiredness (70%), and abdominal pain (68%). Temporal clustering of symptoms was reported in 62% of participants. Principal components analysis identified four symptom clusters: neuropsychiatric (mental tiredness, poor concentration, forgetfulness, depression, irritability, physical tiredness, and sleep problems); gastrointestinal (day sweats, nausea, food intolerance, night sweats, abdominal pain, poor appetite, and diarrhea); algesic (joint pain, muscle pain, and general body pain); and dysesthetic (noise sensitivity, light sensitivity, skin. problems, and headaches). These data demonstrate that symptoms are prevalent in treatment-naive people with HCV and support the hypothesis that symptom clustering occurs.

The design, development, and testing of an X-band 137-element passive reflect away capable of incorporating active devices such as transistor amplifiers is presented. In order to avoid grating lobes in the radiation pattern, the interelement spacing is minimized using dual-feed aperture-coupled patch antenna elements. Far-field radiation pattern results are presented and compared with the predicted radiation patterns. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

We recorded reflexive OKN in ten younger (32.3±5.98 years) and older (65.6±6.53) visually normal subjects under viewing conditions designed to differentiate M-pathway functioning from other pathways. Subjects were required to gaze straight ahead while viewing vertical gratings of either 0.43 or 1.08 cpd, drifting at either 5 or 20°/sec and presented at either 8 or 80% contrast. Gratings were presented as full field stimulation, central stimulation or peripheral (>15°) stimulation. The order of presentation of conditions was pseudo-randomised at two blocked light levels: ‘mesopic’ or twilight conditions (1.8 cdm-2) and ‘photopic’ or full light conditions (71.5 cdm-2). For the partial fields, central stimulation, mesopic light level, lower temporal frequencies (i.e. number of stripes passing per second) each contributed to greater OKN strength as measured by slow-phase velocity (SPV). For full field stimulation, and especially for higher temporal frequencies and low contrast, there was a significant interaction between age group × light level (p = 0.017): SPV diminished much more among the older than the younger group for the twilight condition compared to full light. Such a clear diminution in M-pathway sensitivity revealed by OKN response has important implications for everyday situations like crash avoidance under twilight driving conditions.
