A comparison is made between the structures and calcium binding properties of four cyclic octapeptides that differ in the number of heterocyclic thiazole and oxazoline ring constraints. The conformations of the naturally occurring cyclic octapeptides ascidiacyclamide 1 and patellamide D 2, which each contain two oxazoline and two thiazole rings, are compared by H-1 NMR spectroscopy with the analogues cyclo(Thr-D-Val(Thz)-Ile)(2) 3 with just two thiazoles, and cyclo(Thr-D-Val-alpha Abu-Ile)(2) 4, with no 5-membered rings. The conformations observed in the solid state for ascidiacyclamide (saddle) and patellamide D (twisted figure of eight) were retained in solution, whilst peptide 3 was found to have a chair shape and peptide 4 displayed a range of conformations. The solid state structure of 4 revealed that the peptide takes a relatively planar conformation with a number of transannular hydrogen bonds, which are apparently retained in solution. Complexation studies utilising H-1 NMR and CD spectroscopy yielded 1∶1 calcium-peptide binding constants (log K) for the four peptides (2.9 (1), 2.8 (2), 4.0 (3) and 5.5 (4)) as well as a 1 : 2 metal-peptide binding constant for 3 (log K = 4.5). The affinity for Ca2+ thus decreases with increasing number of 5-membered ring constraints in the macrocycle (4 > 3 > 2 approximate to 1).

Hedamycin, a member of the pluramycin class of antitumour antibiotics, consists of a planar anthrapyrantrione chromophore to which is attached two aminosugar rings at one end and a bisepoxide-containing sidechain at the other end, Binding to double-stranded DNA is known to involve both reversible and non-reversible modes of interaction. As a part of studies directed towards elucidating the structural basis for the observed 5'-pyGT-3' sequence selectivity of hedamycin, we conducted one-dimensional NMR titration experiments at low temperature using the hexadeoxyribonucleotide duplexes d(CACGTG)(2) and d(CGTACG)(2). Spectral changes which occurred during these titrations are consistent with hedamycin initially forming a reversible complex in slow exchange on the NMR timescale and binding through intercalation of the chromophore. Monitoring of this reversible complex over a period of hours revealed a second type of spectral change which corresponds with formation of a non-reversible complex. Using the coupled-system approach we calculate the optical spectra of the fluorescence and transmitted fields of a two-level atom driven by a squeezed vacuum of bandwidths smaller than the natural atomic linewidth. We find that in this regime of squeezing bandwidths the spectra exhibit unique features, such as a hole burning and a three-peak structure, which do not appear for a broadband excitation. We show that the features are unique to the quantum nature of the driving squeezed vacuum field and donor appear when the atom is driven by a classically squeezed field. We find that a quantum squeezed-vacuum field produces squeezing in the emitted fluorescence field which appears only in the squeezing spectrum while there is no squeezing in the total field. We also discuss a nonresonant excitation and find that depending on the squeezing bandwidth there is a peak or a hole in the spectrum at a frequency corresponding to a three-wave-mixing process. The hole appears only for a broadband excitation and results from the strong correlations between squeezed-vacuum photons.

The development of structure perpendicular to and in the plane of the interface has been studied for mesoporous silicate films self-assembled at the air/water interface. The use of constrained X-ray and neutron specular reflectometry has enabled a detailed study of the structural development perpendicular to the interface during the pre-growth phase. Off-specular neutron reflectometry and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction has enabled the in-plane structure to be probed with excellent time resolution. The growth mechanism under the surfactant to silicate source ratios used in this work is clearly due to the self-assembly of micellar and molecular species at the air/liquid interface, resulting in the formation of a planar mesoporous film that is tens of microns thick. This paper presents a case study that explores how operator digging style juxtaposes with mechanical capability for a class of hydraulic mining excavators. The relationships between actuator and digging forces are developed and these are used to identify the excavator's capability to apply forces in various directions. Two distinct modes of operation are examined to see how they relate to the mechanical capabilities of the linkage and to establish if one has merit over the other. It is found that one of these styles results in lower loading of the machine.

We calculate the stationary state of the system of two non-identical two-level atoms driven by a finite-bandwidth two-mode squeezed vacuum. It is well known that two identical two-level atoms driven by a broadband squeezed vacuum may decay to a pure state, called the pure two-atom squeezed state, and that the presence of the antisymmetric state can change its purity. Here, we show that for small interatomic separations the stationary state of two non-identical atoms is not sensitive to the presence of the antisymmetric state and is the pure two-atom squeezed state. This effect is a consequence of the fact that in the system of two non-identical atoms the antisymmetric state is no longer the trapping state. We also calculate the squeezing properties of the emitted field and find that the squeezing spectrum of the output field may exhibit larger squeezing than that in the input squeezed vacuum. Moreover, we show that squeezing in the total field attains the optimum value which can ever be achieved in the field emitted by two atoms.

We present results from both theoretical and experimental studies of the noise characteristics of mode-locked superfluorescent lasers. The results show that observed macroscopic broadband amplitude noise on the laser pulse train has its origin in quantum noise-initiated ''phase-wave'' fluctuations, and we find an associated phase transition in the noise characteristics as a function of laser cavity detuning.

Gold(III)-directed condensation of ethane-1,2-diamine with nitroethane and formaldehyde yielded the gold-coloured macrocyclic complex (cis-6,13-dimethyl-6,13-dinitro-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-1-ido)gold(III) and the orange acyclic complex (1,9-diamino-5-methyl-5-nitro-3,7-diazanoran-3-ido)gold(III) in good yields. Dissolution in strongly acidic solution gave the colourless fully protonated complexes. The pendant nitro groups are disposed on the same side of the macrocycle in a cis geometry, as confirmed by crystal structure analysis. In both complexes the gold ion lies in a square-planar environment of four nitrogen donors, and the co-ordinate bond to the deprotonated amine is shorter than the remaining Au-N distances.

An experimental study of the effect of fuel stagnation temperature on mixing in a supersonic hydrogen-air flame is described, The combustor consisted of a constant-area rectangular duct with a centrally located fuel-injection strut that spanned the width. A high-enthalpy stream of air was supplied by a free-piston shock tunnel, and heated hydrogen fuel, supplied by a gun-tunnel, was injected into the freestream as a coflowing planar jet. The freestream total enthalpies were 5.6, 6.5, and 9 MJ/kg, and fuel stagnation temperatures were 300, 450, and 700 K, Raising the fuel stagnation temperature increased the fuel velocity to be near that of the airstream and resulted in a decrease in the mixing rate, Even as the fuel and air velocities became equal, significant mixing still occurred because of a large difference in density, Increasing the freestream enthalpy reduced the difference between the initial air temperature and the adiabatic flame temperature, which in turn reduced the heat addition, and subsequently, the amount of pressure rise in the duct.

The steady-state resonance fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom driven by a bichromatic field in a broadband squeezed vacuum is studied. When the carrier frequency of the squeezed vacuum is tuned to the frequency of the central spectral line, anomalous spectral features, such as hole burning and dispersive profiles, can occur at the central line. We show that these features appear for wider, and experimentally more convenient, ranges of the parameters than in the case of monochromatic excitation. ?he absence of a coherent spectral component at the central line makes any experimental attempt to observe these features much easier. We also discuss the general features of the spectrum. When the carrier frequency of the squeezed vacuum is tuned to the first odd or even sidebands, the spectrum is asymmetric and only the sidebands an sensitive to phase. For appropriate choices of the phase the linewidths or only the odd or even sidebands can be reduced. A dressed-stale interpretation is provided.

The fluorescence spectrum of a strongly driven two-level atom located inside an optical cavity damped by a narrow-bandwidth squeezed vacuum is studied. We use a dressed atom model approach, first applied to squeezed vacuum problems by Yeoman and Barnett, to derive the master equation of the system and discuss the role of the cavity and the squeezed vacuum in the narrowing of the spectral lines and the population trapping effect. We find that in the presence of a single-mode cavity the effect of squeezing on the fluorescence spectrum is more evident in the linewidths of the Rabi sidebands rather than in the linewidth of the central component. Even in the absence of squeezing, the cavity can reduce the linewidth of the central component almost to zero, whereas the Rabi sidebands can be narrowed only to some finite value. In the presence of a two-mode cavity and a two-mode squeezed vacuum the signature of squeezing is evident in the linewidths of all spectral lines. We also establish that the narrowing of the spectral lines is very sensitive to the detuning of the driving field from the atomic resonance. Moreover, we find that the population trapping effect, predicted for the broadband squeezed vacuum case, may appear in a narrow-bandwidth case only if the input squeezed modes are perfectly matched to the cavity modes and if there is non-zero squeezing at the Rabi sidebands.

The reaction of the bis(1,2-diamine) copper(II) complexes of racemic propane-1,2-diamine (pn) and 2-methylpropane-1,2-diamine (dmen) with formaldehyde and nitroethane in methanol under basic conditions yields minor macrocyclic condensation products in addition to the major acyclic products. Where C-pendant methyl groups on the pair of coordinated diamines are in cis dispositions, the first -NH-CH2-C(CH3)(NO2)-CH2-NH- ring formation occurs at amine pairs distant from these C-methyl substituents, and further reaction to yield a macrocycle is not observed. However, where the C-methyl substituents are in trans dispositions, the chemistry proceeds to yield the macrocycle. Commencing with pn, trans-(6,13-diammonio-2,6,9,13-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) perchlorate formed and crystallized in the space group P2(1)/n, with a 9.782(2), b 9.2794(6), c 17.017(4) Angstrom, beta 103.24(1)degrees. The copper ion is found in a square-planar environment, with the two methyl groups of the pn residues and the pairs of introduced pendant groups all in trans arrangements.

A flow tagging technique based upon ionic fluorescence in strontium is investigated for applications to velocity measurements in gas flows. The method is based upon a combination of two laser based spectroscopic techniques, i.e. resonantly-enhanced ionisation and laser-induced ionic fluorescence. Strontium is first ionised and then planar laser-induced fluorescence is utilised to give 2D 'bright images' of the ionised region of the flow at a given time delay. The results show that this method can be used for velocity measurements. The velocities were measured in two types of air-acetylene flames - a slot burner and a circular burner yielding velocities of 5.1 +/- 0.1 m/s and 9.3 +/- 0.2 m/s, respectively. The feasibility of the method for the determination of velocities in faster flows than those investigated here is discussed.

In this paper, a small transmit array of transistor amplifiers illuminated by a passive array of microstrip patches in the reactive near-field region is investigated as a power-combining structure. The two cases considered are when the transmit array radiates in a free space and when a passive array similar to the one used for illumination collects the radiated power. A comparison of the performance of the proposed structure against the alternative one, which uses a conventional horn antenna as a power-launching/receiving device, is also presented.
