To identify possible associations between host genetic factors and the onset of liver fibrosis following Schistosoma japonicum infection, the major histocompatibility class II alleles of 84 individuals living on an island (Jishan) endemic for schistosomiasis japonica in the Poyang Lake Region of Southern China were determined. Forty patients exhibiting advanced schistosomiasis, characterised by extensive liver fibrosis, and 44 age and sex-matched control subjects were assessed for the class II haplotypes HLA-DRBI and HLA-DQB1. Two HLA-DRB1 alleles, HLA-DRB1*0901 (P = 0.012) and *1302 (P = 0.039), and two HLA-DQB1 alleles, HLA-DQB1*0303 (P = 0.012) and *0609 (P = 0.037), were found to be significantly associated with susceptibility to fibrosis. These associated DRB1 and DQB1 alleles are in very strong linkage disequilibrium, with DRB1*0901-DQB1*0303 and DRB1*1302-DQB1*0609 found as: common haplotypes in this population. In contrast, the alleles HLA-DRB1*1501 (P = 0.025) and HLA-DQB 1*0601 (P = 0.022) were found to be associated with resistance to hepatosplenic disease. Moreover, the alleles DQB1*0303 and DRB1*0901 did not increase susceptibility in the presence of DQB1*0601, indicating that DQB1*0601 is dominant over DQB1*0303 and DRB1*0901. The study has thus identified both positive and negative associations between HLA class II alleles and the risk of individuals developing moderate to severe liver fibrosis following schistosome infection. As part of an institutional closure programme, 95 individuals with an intellectual disability were relocated to community-based group homes. Each individual was assessed 6 months prior to the relocation and then again after 1, 6, and 12 months of community living. Assessments involved ratings of adaptive and maladaptive behaviour, choice-making, and life circumstances. The group means comparing institution to community ratings showed improvements in adaptive functioning but no significant change in maladaptive behaviour. There were also improvements in life circumstances and increased opportunities for choice-making following relocation to the community. These outcomes suggest that relocation to the community was associated with a more active and normalised lifestyle than experienced in the institutional setting.

The effect of adding thickening agents on the penetration of a sunscreen benzophenone-3 through epidermal and a high-density polyethylene membrane was studied using both very thick (infinite dose) and thin tin use) applications. Contradictory results were obtained. Thickening agents retard skin penetration, in a manner consistent with a diffusional resistance in the formulation, when applied as an infinite dose. In contrast, when applied as in thin (in use) doses, thickening agents promote penetration, most likely through greater stratum corneum diffusivity arising from an enhanced hydration by the thicker formulations. The two key implications from this work are (i) a recognition of the danger in the potential extrapolation of infinite dosing to in use situations, and (ii) to recognize that thicker formulations may sometimes enhance the penetration of other topical agents when applied in use.

A quartz crystal microbalance modified by the attachment of silica particles derivatized with the aminopolycarboxylate ligand N-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid has been employed to assess conditions under which mercury (II), lead (II), and silver (I) nitrates may be separated in aqueous solution. The separation protocol, which involved removal of Hg(II), as [HgI4](2-), and Pb(II) with H+ was successfully applied to a batchwise separation of the 3 metal ions.

A body of published evidence suggests that a significant portion of enamel matrix protein synthesized by ameloblasts localises in the lysosomal-endosomal organelles of these enamel organ cells. Little is known regarding the lysosomal proteolytic activities during amelogenesis. The aims of this study were to detect and measure the activities of lysosomal peptidases cathepsin B (E.C. 3.4.22.1) and dipeptidyl-peptidase II (E.C. 3.4.14.2) in the enamel organ of the rat incisor and to ascertain whether rat enamel matrix proteins are degraded by these peptidases in vitro. Whole enamel organs were dissected from rat mandibular incisors. Enamel protein was also collected from the rat teeth. Analysis indicated that the rat incisor enamel organs contained specific activities of both dipeptidyl-peptidase II and cathepsin B at levels comparable with those of kidney which is rich in both these lysosomal peptidases. Gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting demonstrated that both cathepsin B and dipeptidyl-peptidase II were able to substantially degrade the rat enamel proteins in vitro. Based on these observations, we propose that lysosomal proteases have roles in amelogenesis in the intracellular degradation of amelogenins.

A new addition to the family of single-molecule magnets is reported: an Fete cage stabilized with benzoate and pyridonate ligands. Monte Carlo methods have been used to derive exchange parameters within the cage, and hence model susceptibility behavior.
