The solidification of intruded magma in porous rocks can result in the following two consequences: (1) the heat release due to the solidification of the interface between the rock and intruded magma and (2) the mass release of the volatile fluids in the region where the intruded magma is solidified into the rock. Traditionally, the intruded magma solidification problem is treated as a moving interface (i.e. the solidification interface between the rock and intruded magma) problem to consider these consequences in conventional numerical methods. This paper presents an alternative new approach to simulate thermal and chemical consequences/effects of magma intrusion in geological systems, which are composed of porous rocks. In the proposed new approach and algorithm, the original magma solidification problem with a moving boundary between the rock and intruded magma is transformed into a new problem without the moving boundary but with the proposed mass source and physically equivalent heat source. The major advantage in using the proposed equivalent algorithm is that a fixed mesh of finite elements with a variable integration time-step can be employed to simulate the consequences and effects of the intruded magma solidification using the conventional finite element method. The correctness and usefulness of the proposed equivalent algorithm have been demonstrated by a benchmark magma solidification problem. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

MCM-41 samples of various pore dimensions are synthesized. Plotting of nitrogen adsorption data at 77 K versus the statistical film thickness (comparison plot) reveals three distinct stages, with a characteristic of two points of inflection. The steep intermediate stage caused by capillary condensation occurred in the highly uniform mesopores. From the slopes of the sections before and after the condensation, the surface area of the mesopores is calculated. The linear portion of the last section is extrapolated to the adsorption axis of the comparison plot, and this intercept is used to obtain the volume of the mesopores. From the surface area and pore volume, average mesopore diameter is calculated, and the value thus obtained is in good agreement with the pore dimension obtained from powder X-ray diffraction measurements. The principle of the calculation as well as problems associated are discussed in detail.

Economic growth usually leads to a substantial increase in the demand for recreational fishing, and China is likely to follow this trend. Factors influencing this expansion in demand are identified. Recreational fishing is of major economic importance in higher income countries and indicators of its economic significance are given. Growing demand for recreational fishing results in intensified involvement of recreational fishers in conflicts about resource use. With increasing demand for recreational fishing, recreational fishers face growing competition with one another for limited fish stocks and with commercial fishers. Their concerns for environmental threats to fish stocks also intensify. Furthermore, some strategies of recreational fishers are increasingly criticised by conservationists. Governments, therefore, are put under pressure to adopt policies to address these conflicts. Some of the policy measures adopted to help sustain the fisheries and reduce conflict are outlined. These include limits on the catch and exclusive zones for recreational fishing. However, wild stocks of fish are likely to remain under mounting harvesting and other pressures. Therefore, we need to consider the role that aquaculture can play in overcoming these problems. The possible ways in which aquaculture can do this are outlined and discussed.

The influence that trace concentrations Of SiO2 have on improving grain-boundary conduction via precursor scavenging using additional heat treatment at 1200 degreesC for 40 h before sintering was investigated. At a SiO2-impurity level (SIL) less than or equal to 160 ppm by weight, the grain-boundary resistivity (p(gb)) decreased to 20% of its value, while no improvement in grain-boundary conduction was found at a SIL greater than or equal to 310 ppm. The correlation between the resistance per unit grain-boundary area, p(gb), and average grain size indicated that the inhomogeneous distribution of the siliceous phase in the sample with a SIL greater than or equal to 310 ppm. hampered the scavenging reaction.

Ussing [1] considered the steady flux of a single chemical component diffusing through a membrane under the influence of chemical potentials and derived from his linear model, an expression for the ratio of this flux and that of the complementary experiment in which the boundary conditions were interchanged. Here, an extension of Ussing's flux ratio theorem is obtained for n chemically interacting components governed by a linear system of diffusion-migration equations that may also incorporate linear temporary trapping reactions. The determinants of the output flux matrices for complementary experiments are shown to satisfy an Ussing flux ratio formula for steady state conditions of the same form as for the well-known one-component case. Any given n X n matrix A is shown to be a restriction, to the A-invariant subspace, of a nonnegative N x N matrix B of spectral radius p(B) arbitrarily close to p(A). A difference inclusion x(k+1) is an element of Ax(k), where A is a compact set of matrices, is asymptotically stable if and only if A can be extended to a set B of nonnegative matrices B with \ \B \ \ (1) < 1 or \ \B \ \ (infinity) < 1. Similar results are derived for differential inclusions.

Twins taking part in two unrelated studies were sent a questionnaire together with a self-addressed envelope that either carried one or multiple (up to 5) stamps to the same value. The unprompted proportion of questionnaires returned (before commencement of telephone reminder calls) was increased from 62% to 71% in one study, and from 43% to 52% in the other study (test for common odds ratio in studies, p = 0.04).

The quasi mode theory of macroscopic quantization in quantum optics and cavity QED developed by Dalton, Barnett and Knight is generalized. This generalization allows for cases in which two or more quasi permittivities, along with their associated mode functions, are needed to describe the classical optics device. It brings problems such as reflection and refraction at a dielectric boundary, the linear coupler, and the coupling of two optical cavities within the scope of the theory. For the most part, the results that are obtained here are simple generalizations of those obtained in previous work. However the coupling constants, which are of great importance in applications of the theory, are shown to contain significant additional terms which cannot be 'guessed' from the simpler forms. The expressions for the coupling constants suggest that the critical factor in determining the strength of coupling between a pair of quasi modes is their degree of spatial overlap. In an accompanying paper a fully quantum theoretic derivation of the laws of reflection and refraction at a boundary is given as an illustration of the generalized theory. The quasi mode picture of this process involves the annihilation of a photon travelling in the incident region quasi mode, and the subsequent creation of a photon in either the incident region or transmitted region quasi modes.

In this paper a methodology for integrated multivariate monitoring and control of biological wastewater treatment plants during extreme events is presented. To monitor the process, on-line dynamic principal component analysis (PCA) is performed on the process data to extract the principal components that represent the underlying mechanisms of the process. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is used to classify the operational state. Performing clustering on scores from PCA solves computational problems as well as increases robustness due to noise attenuation. The class-membership information from FCM is used to derive adequate control set points for the local control loops. The methodology is illustrated by a simulation study of a biological wastewater treatment plant, on which disturbances of various types are imposed. The results show that the methodology can be used to determine and co-ordinate control actions in order to shift the control objective and improve the effluent quality.

Some efficient solution techniques for solving models of noncatalytic gas-solid and fluid-solid reactions are presented. These models include those with non-constant diffusivities for which the formulation reduces to that of a convection-diffusion problem. A singular perturbation problem results for such models in the presence of a large Thiele modulus, for which the classical numerical methods can present difficulties. For the convection-diffusion like case, the time-dependent partial differential equations are transformed by a semi-discrete Petrov-Galerkin finite element method into a system of ordinary differential equations of the initial-value type that can be readily solved. In the presence of a constant diffusivity, in slab geometry the convection-like terms are absent, and the combination of a fitted mesh finite difference method with a predictor-corrector method is used to solve the problem. Both the methods are found to converge, and general reaction rate forms can be treated. These methods are simple and highly efficient for arbitrary particle geometry and parameters, including a large Thiele modulus. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

It is believed that surface instabilities can occur during the extrusion of linear low density polyethylene due to high extensional stresses at the exit of the die. Local crack development can occur at a critical stress level when melt rupture is reached. This high extensional stress results from the rearrangement of the flow at the boundary transition between the wall exit and the free surface. The stress is highest at the extrudate surface and decreases into the bulk of the material. The location of the region where the critical level is reached can determine the amplitude of the extrudate surface distortion, This paper studies the effect of wall slip on the numerically simulated extensional stress level at the die exit and correlates this to the experimentally determined amplitude of the surface instability. The effect of die exit radius and die wall roughness on extrusion surface instabilities is also correlated to the exit stress level in the same way. Whereas full slip may completely suppress the surface instability, a reduction in the exit stress level and instability amplitude is also shown for a rounded die exit and a slight increase in instability is shown to result from a rough die wall. A surface instability map demonstrates how the shear rate for onset of extrusion surface instabilities can be predicted on the basis of melt strength measurements and simulated stress peaks at the exit of the die. Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestations affect schoolchildren worldwide, creating social, economic and health consequences for families. Problems with self-detection, chronic infestations and classroom transmission are compounded by increasing resistance of the lice to pediculicides. Public health strategies are based on limited research and little is known about transmission dynamics. Mismanagement and transmission in the general community are blamed for control failure. The purpose of this study was to explore community head-lice experience in Brisbane, Australia, and to identify critical factors underlying control failure. A home-based pilot survey used physical examination to verify transmission and treatment patterns which were self-reported by a group of trace-contact families in addition to other unconnected participants. The survey was enlarged to further compare therapy outcomes and suspected risk factors. The findings reinforce those of previous studies - that children attending school and early childhood centres, and subsequently their families, are most at risk of contracting pediculosis capitis, and some may carry lice for years. First-line (pediculicidal) treatment and even additional physical methods of hand-picking and fine-toothed combing usually fail to eradicate lice quickly and completely (overall cure-rate 39 per cent, n = 84 cases). Failures were linked to hair characteristics. Public education alone may not control pediculosis. Accurate diagnosis requires considerable experience; a strong case exists for returning to institutional surveillance.

Computer simulation was used to suggest potential selection strategies for beef cattle breeders with different mixes of clients between two potential markets. The traditional market paid on the basis of carcass weight (CWT), while a new market considered marbling grade in addition to CWT as a basis for payment. Both markets instituted discounts for CWT in excess of 340 kg and light carcasses below 300 kg. Herds were simulated for each price category on the carcass weight grid for the new market. This enabled the establishment of phenotypic relationships among the traits examined [CWT, percent intramuscular fat (IMF), carcass value in the traditional market, carcass value in the new market, and the expected proportion of progeny in elite price cells in the new market pricing grid]. The appropriateness of breeding goals was assessed on the basis of client satisfaction. Satisfaction was determined by the equitable distribution of available stock between markets combined with the assessment of the utility of the animal within the market to which it was assigned. The best goal for breeders with predominantly traditional clients was a CWT in excess of 330 kg, while that for breeders with predominantly new market clients was a CWT of between 310 and 329 kg and with a marbling grade of AAA in the Ontario carcass pricing system. For breeders who wished to satisfy both new and traditional clients, the optimal CWT was 310-329 kg and the optimal marbling grade was AA-AAA. This combination resulted in satisfaction levels of greater than 75% among clients, regardless of the distribution of the clients between the traditional and new marketplaces.
