We demonstrate a contradiction of quantum mechanics with local hidden variable theories for continuous quadrature phase amplitude (position and momentum) measurements. For any quantum state, this contradiction is lost for situations where the quadrature phase amplitude results are always macroscopically distinct. We show that for optical realizations of this experiment, where one uses homodyne detection techniques to perform the quadrature phase amplitude measurement, one has an amplification prior to detection, so that macroscopic fields are incident on photodiode detectors. The high efficiencies of such detectors may open a way for a loophole-free test of local hidden variable theories.

The effects of the support phase and catalyst preparation methods on catalytic activity and carbon deposition were systematically investigated over nickel catalysts supported on Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO for the reforming reaction of methane with carbon dioxide. It is found that the pore structure of the support and metal-support interaction significantly affected the catalytic activity and coking resistance. Catalyst with well-developed porosity exhibited higher catalytic activity. Strong interaction between metal and the support made the catalyst more resistant to sintering and coking, thus resulting in a longer time of catalyst stability. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

We consider one source of decoherence for a single trapped ion due to intensity and phase fluctuations in the exciting laser pulses. For simplicity we assume that the stochastic processes involved are white noise processes, which enables us to give a simple master equation description of this source of decoherence. This master equation is averaged over the noise, and is sufficient to describe the results of experiments that probe the oscillations in the electronic populations as energy is exchanged between the internal and electronic motion. Our results are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments and predict that the decoherence rate will depend on vibrational quantum number in different ways depending on which vibrational excitation sideband is used.

The one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions interacting with dispersionless phonons is studied using a new variant of the density matrix renormalization group. By examining various low-energy excitations of finite chains, the metal-insulator phase boundary is determined precisely and agrees with the predictions of strong coupling theory in the antiadiabatic regime and is consistent with renormalization group arguments in the adiabatic regime. The Luttinger liquid parameters, determined by finite-size scaling, are consistent with a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.

Plant cells are characterized by low water content, so the fraction of cell volume (volume fraction) in a vessel is large compared with other cell systems, even if the cell concentrations are the same. Therefore, concentration of plant cells should preferably be expressed by the liquid volume basis rather than by the total vessel volume basis. In this paper, a new model is proposed to analyze behavior of a plant cell culture by dividing the cell suspension into the biotic- and abiotic-phases, Using this model, we analyzed the cell-growth and the alkaloid production by Catharanthus roseus, Large errors in the simulated results were observed if the phase-segregation was not considered.

Cerebral responses to alternating periods of a control task and a selective letter generation paradigm were investigated with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Subjects selectively generated letters from four designated sets of six letters from the English language alphabet, with the instruction that they were not to produce letters in alphabetical order either forward or backward, repeat or alternate letters. Performance during this condition was compared with that of a control condition in which subjects recited the same letters in alphabetical order. Analyses revealed significant and extensive foci of activation in a number of cerebral regions including mid-dorsolateral frontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, precuneus, supramarginal gyrus, and cerebellum during the selective letter generation condition. These findings are discussed with respect to recent positron emission tomography (PET) and fMRI studies of verbal working memory and encoding/retrieval in episodic memory.

A sensitive and reproducible solid-phase extraction (SPE) method for the quantification of oxycodone in human plasma was developed. Varian Certify SPE cartridges containing both C-8 and benzoic acid functional groups were the most suitable for the extraction of oxycodone and codeine (internal standard), with consistently high (greater than or equal to 80%) and reproducible recoveries. The elution mobile phase consisted of 1.2 ml of butyl chloride-isopropanol (80:20, v/v) containing 2% ammonia. The quantification limit for oxycodone was 5.3 pmol on-column. Within-day and inter-day coefficients of variation were 1.2% and 6.8% respectively for 284 nM oxycodone and 9.5% and 6.2% respectively for 28.4 nM oxycodone using 0.5-ml plasma aliquots. The high-affinity receptors for human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin-1 (IL-3), and IL-5 are heterodimeric complexes consisting of cytokine-specific alpha subunits and a common signal-transducing beta subunit (h beta c). We have previously demonstrated the oncogenic potential of this group of receptors by identifying constitutively activating point mutations in the extracellular and transmembrane domains of h beta c. We report here a comprehensive screen of the entire h beta c molecule that has led to the identification of additional constitutive point mutations by virtue of their ability to confer factor independence on murine FDC-P1 cells. These mutations were clustered exclusively in a central region of h beta c that encompasses the extracellular membrane-proximal domain, transmembrane domain, and membrane-proximal region of the cytoplasmic domain. Interestingly, most h beta c mutants exhibited cell type-specific constitutive activity, with only two transmembrane domain mutants able to confer factor independence on both murine FDC-P1 and BAF-B03 cells. Examination of the biochemical properties of these mutants in FDC-P1 cells indicated that MAP kinase (ERK1/2), STAT, and JAK2 signaling molecules were constitutively activated. In contrast, only some of the mutant beta subunits were constitutively tyrosine phosphorylated. Taken together; these results highlight key regions involved in h beta c activation, dissociate h beta c tyrosine phosphorylation from MAP kinase and STAT activation, and suggest the involvement of distinct mechanisms by which proliferative signals can be generated by h beta c. Familial hyperaldosteronism type II (FH-II) is characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance and hypersecretion of aldosterone due to adrenocortical hyperplasia or an aldosterone-producing adenoma; unlike FH type I (FH-I), hyperaldosteronism in FH-II is not suppressible by dexamethasone. Of a total of 17 FH-II families with 44 affected members, we studied a large kindred with 7 affected members that was informative for linkage analysis. Family members were screened with the aldosterone/PRA ratio test; patients with aldosterone/PRA ratio greater than 25 underwent fludrocortisone/salt suppression testing for confirmation of autonomous aldosterone secretion. Postural testing, adrenal gland imaging, and adrenal venous sampling were also performed. Individuals affected by FH-II demonstrated lack of suppression of plasma A levels after 4 days of dexamethasone treatment (0.5 mg every 6 h). All patients had neg ative genetic testing for the defect associated with FH-I, the CYP11B1/CYP11B2 hybrid gene. Genetic linkage was then examined between FH-II and aldosterone synthase (the CYP11B2 gene) on chromosome 8q. A polyadenylase repeat within the 5'-region of the CYP11B2 gene and 9 other markers covering an approximately 80-centimorgan area on chromosome 8q21-8qtel were genotyped and analyzed for linkage. Two-point logarithm of odds scores were negative and ranged from -12.6 for the CYP11B2 polymorphic marker to -0.98 for the D8S527 marker at a recombination distance (theta) of 0. Multipoint logarithm of odds score analysis confirmed the exclusion of the chromosome 8q21-8qtel area as a region harboring the candidate gene for FH-II in this family. We conclude that FH-II shares autosomal dominant inheritance and hyperaldosteronism with FH-I, but, as demonstrated by the large kindred investigated in this report, it is clinically and genetically distinct. Linkage analysis demonstrated that the CYP11B2 gene is not responsible for FH-II in this family; furthermore, chromosome 8q21-8qtel most likely does not harbor the genetic defect in this kindred.

We present a potential realization of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger all or nothing contradiction of quantum mechanics with local realism using phase measurement techniques in a simple photon number triplet. Such a triplet could be generated using nondegenerate parametric oscillation. [S0031-9007(98)07671-6].

In his study of the 'time of arrival' problem in the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics of a single particle, Allcock [1] noted that the direction of the probability flux vector is not necessarily the same as that of the mean momentum of a wave packet, even when the packet is composed entirely of plane waves with a common direction of momentum. Packets can be constructed, for example for a particle moving under a constant force, in which probability flows for a finite time in the opposite direction to the momentum. A similar phenomenon occurs for the Dirac electron. The maximum amount of probabilitiy backflow which can occur over a given time interval can be calculated in each case.

An experimental study on the ternary system PbO-ZnO-SiO2, in air by high-temperature equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis was carried out as part of the wider research program on the six-component system PbO-ZnO-SiO2-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3, which combines experimental and thermodynamic computer modeling techniques to characterize zinc and lead industrial slags. Liquidus and solidus data were reported for all primary phase fields in the system PbO-ZnO-SiO2 in the temperature range 640 degrees C to 1400 degrees C (913 to 1673 K).

We consider the magnetoresistance oscillation phenomena in the Bechgaard salts (TMTSF)(2)X, where X = ClO4, PF6, and AsF6 in pulsed magnetic fields to 51 T. Of particular importance is the observation of a new magnetoresistance oscillation for X = ClO4 in its quenched state. In the absence of any Fermi-surface reconstruction due to anion order at low temperatures, all three materials exhibit nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude in the spin-density-wave (SDW) state. We discuss a model where, below a characteristic temperature T* within the SDW state, a magnetic breakdown gap opens. [S0163-1829(99)00904-2].
