Item noise models of recognition assert that interference at retrieval is generated by the words from the study list. Context noise models of recognition assert that interference at retrieval is generated by the contexts in which the test word has appeared. The authors introduce the bind cue decide model of episodic memory, a Bayesian context noise model, and demonstrate how it can account for data from the item noise and dual-processing approaches to recognition memory. From the item noise perspective, list strength and list length effects, the mirror effect for word frequency and concreteness, and the effects of the similarity of other words in a list are considered. From the dual-processing perspective, process dissociation data on the effects of length, temporal separation of lists, strength, and diagnosticity of context are examined. The authors conclude that the context noise approach to recognition is a viable alternative to existing approaches.

The origin of smooth muscle cells involved in vascular healing was examined. Eighteen C57BL/6 (Ly 5.2) female mice underwent whole body irradiation followed by transfusion with 10(6) bone nucleated marrow cells from congenic (Ly 5.1) male donors. Successful repopulation by donor marrow was demonstrated after 4 weeks by flow cytometry with FITC-conjugated A20.1/Ly 5.1 monoclonal antibody. The iliac artery of six of the chimeric mice was scratch-injured by five passes of a probe, causing severe medial damage. After 4 weeks the arterial lumen was obliterated by a cell-rich neointima, with alpha-smooth muscle actin-containing cells present around the residual lumen. Approximately half of these cells were of male donor origin, as evidenced by in situ hybridization with a Y chromosome-specific probe. An organized arterial thrombus was formed in the remaining 12 chimeric mice by inserting an 8.0 silk suture into the left common carotid artery. Donor cells staining with alpha-smooth muscle actin were found in those arteries sustaining serious damage but not in arteries with minimal damage. Our results suggest that bone marrow-derived cells are recruited in vascular healing as a complementary source of smooth muscle-like cells when the media is severely damaged and few resident smooth muscle cells are available to effect repair.

The demonstration that both oxygen atoms of 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5] undecane (1), the sex-pheromone of the female olive fly, originate from dioxygen, strongly implicates monooxygenase mediated processes in assembly of (1), and reveals unexpected complexity in the formation of its nine-carbon precursor.

The finite element method is used to simulate coupled problems, which describe the related physical and chemical processes of ore body formation and mineralization, in geological and geochemical systems. The main purpose of this paper is to illustrate some simulation results for different types of modelling problems in pore-fluid saturated rock masses. The aims of the simulation results presented in this paper are: (1) getting a better understanding of the processes and mechanisms of ore body formation and mineralization in the upper crust of the Earth; (2) demonstrating the usefulness and applicability of the finite element method in dealing with a wide range of coupled problems in geological and geochemical systems; (3) qualitatively establishing a set of showcase problems, against which any numerical method and computer package can be reasonably validated. A new model of halo formation in directional solidification is presented. The model describes halo formation in terms of competitive growth between the halo phase and coupled eutectic in liquid with a nominal composition that follows the primary phase liquidus extension with decreasing temperature. The model distinguishes between the effects of constitutional, capillarity and (where applicable) kinetic undercooling and avoids a number of theoretical inconsistencies associated with previous models. The critical growth rate for halo formation in directionally solidified hypereutectic Al-Si alloys is calculated using the model in conjunction with models of primary phase and coupled eutectic growth from the literature. The calculated result agrees reasonably well with the experimental result of Yilmaz and Elliott (Met. Sci. 18 (1984) 362), given the use of a relatively simple isolated dendrite tip model to calculate the growth undercooling of the halo tip. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Assessment has been integral to career counseling since the early 1900s. During that time, the greatest amount of attention was focused on quantitative assessment. Thus, there is still very little to guide the development and conduct of qualitative assessment in career counseling. The authors present an overview of qualitative career assessment and its theoretical underpinnings and propose suggestions that could guide the development of qualitative career assessment instruments.

The functional brain organisation of mathematically gifted adolescents may be different from those of average mathematical ability. In this study we used fMRI to examine the neural circuitry that mediates the performance of mathematically gifted boys and average ability controls while engaged in mental rotation. Eight math gifted male adolescents and five average ability male adolescents were presented 18 control and 18 mental rotation trials in two separate blocks. Participants selected one of four test stimuli to match the target stimulus by pressing one of four fibreoptic buttons. The control task required a simple 'best match' for the target stimulus. EPI scans were acquired on a 3-T MR scanner and a fixed effects statistical analysis (SPM99) was used to identify areas of significant activation in the rotation tasks, for the two groups. The results indicate that during mental rotation both groups activate the parietal lobes bilaterally, though to different levels. Moreover, the math gifted are uniformly bilateral in their pattern of activation, and engage some anterior regions not found in those of average ability. These regions include bilateral prefrontal cortex and the right anterior cingulate, which may serve to heighten concentration, and to optimise the pre-planning of purposeful actions.

Slumping of hardsetting seedbeds upon wetting has not been extensively studied despite the likelihood that it determines the physical properties after drying. Slumping results from processes similar to those involved in crusting except that overburden pressure can dominate rather than rainfall kinetic energy. Only a few studies have dealt with the morphological description of slumping. To simulate different climatic and management conditions, repacked seedbeds of a hardsetting sandy-loam soil were subjected to a range of wetting conditions, e.g. capillary rise, immersion, and rainfall simulation. Slumping processes were characterized using qualitative and quantitative micromorphological observations of polished blocks and thin sections from resin-impregnated samples. A morphogenetical framework was proposed to help description of the complex associations of processes which can lead to structural collapse (crusting and slumping) on wetting. Three main stages were considered, i.e. aggregate disruption or abrasion, relocation of the released material, and compaction. In the hardsetting material studied here, structural collapse under slow wetting occurred at the bottom of cores due to aggregate coalescence under overburden pressure. Coalescence required aggregate cohesion being reduced by microcracking; therefore, it differed from the coalescence previously described in unstable silty loam soils where microcracking was not necessary for aggregates to coalesce. Macroporosity decreased most strongly under fast wetting due to physical dispersion and aggregate breakdown. Under simulated rainfall, compaction by raindrops could not be distinguish from aggregate breakdown. The role of overburden pressure and of rainfall kinetic energy remains to be stated; new data are required including measurement of total porosity in the initial, wet, and dry states. Reconstruction of the evolution of the Tyrrhenian Sea shows that the major stage of rifting associated with the opening of this basin began at similar to10 Ma. It involved two episodes of back arc extension, which were induced by the rollback of a west dipping subducting slab. The first period of extension (10-6 Ma) was prominent in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea and in the western part of the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. The second period of extension, mainly affected the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, began in the latest Messinian (6-5 Ma) and has been accompanied by subduction rollback at rates of 60-100 km Myr(-1). Slab reconstruction, combined with paleomagnetic and paleogeographic constraints, indicates that in the central Apennines, the latest Messinian (6-5 Ma) arrival of a carbonate platform at the subduction zone impeded subduction and initiated a slab tear and major strike-slip faults. These processes resulted in the formation of a narrow subducting slab beneath the Ionian Sea that has undergone faster subduction rollback and induced extreme rates of back arc extension.

A series of aluminum-10 wt pet silicon castings were produced in sand molds to investigate the effect of modification on porosity formation. Modification with individual additions of either strontium or sodium resulted in a statistically significant increase in the level of porosity compared to unmodified castings. The increase in porosity with modification is due to the presence of numerous dispersed pores, which were absent in the unmodified casting. It is proposed that these pores form as a result of differences in size of the aluminum-silicon eutectic grains between unmodified and modified alloys. A geometric model is developed to show how the size of eutectic grains can influence the amount and distribution of porosity. Unlike traditional feeding-based models, which incorporate the effect: of microstructure on permeability, this model considers what happens when liquid is isolated from the riser and can no longer flow. This simple isolation model complements rather than contradicts existing theories on modification-related porosity formation and should be considered in the development of future comprehensive models.

A large number of ore deposits that formed in the Peruvian Andes during the Miocene (15-5 Ma) are related to the subduction of the Nazea plate beneath the South American plate. Here we show that the spatial and temporal distribution of these deposits correspond with the arrival of relatively buoyant topographic anomalies, namely the Nazca Ridge in central Peru and the now-consumed Inca Plateau in northern Peru, at the subduction zone. Plate reconstruction shows a rapid metallogenic response to the arrival of the topographic anomalies at the subduction trench. This is indicated by clusters of ore deposits situated within the proximity of the laterally migrating zones of ridge subduction. It is accordingly suggested that tectonic changes associated with impingement of the aseismic ridge into the subduction zone may trigger the formation of ore deposits in metallogenically fertile suprasubduction environments. Al-3-11% Si alloys have been high-pressure die-cast and characterized microstructurally. Alstruc was used to calculate the solidification characteristics and fraction of eutectic. Defect bands were observed at all Si contents, although their constitution, position and distinctiveness were a function of Si content. The defect bands contain a higher fraction Al-Si eutectic than the surroundings in all alloys, and porosity was additionally found in the band in AlSi3. With decreasing Si content, the defect bands formed closer to the casting surface, became more prevalent and also the width of the bands decreased. These differences are discussed by considering the effect of Si content on the distribution of solid in the mushy wall layers and on the feeding potentials of the alloys. The observations are consistent with the mechanism proposed by Gourlay et al. in which bands form due to deformation within the solidifying mushy wall layers. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
