Bond's method for ball mill scale-up only gives the mill power draw for a given duty. This method is incompatible with computer modelling and simulation techniques. It might not be applicable for the design of fine grinding ball mills and ball mills preceded by autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills. Model-based ball mill scale-up methods have not been validated using a wide range of full-scale circuit data. Their accuracy is therefore questionable. Some of these methods also need expensive pilot testing. A new ball mill scale-up procedure is developed which does not have these limitations. This procedure uses data from two laboratory tests to determine the parameters of a ball mill model. A set of scale-up criteria then scales-up these parameters. The procedure uses the scaled-up parameters to simulate the steady state performance of full-scale mill circuits. At the end of the simulation, the scale-up procedure gives the size distribution, the volumetric flowrate and the mass flowrate of all the streams in the circuit, and the mill power draw.

A new ball mill scale-up procedure is developed which uses laboratory data to predict the performance of MI-scale ball mill circuits. This procedure contains two laboratory tests. These laboratory tests give the data for the determination of the parameters of a ball mill model. A set of scale-up criteria then scales-up these parameters. The procedure uses the scaled-up parameters to simulate the steady state performance of the full-scale mill circuit. At the end of the simulation, the scale-up procedure gives the size distribution, the volumetric flowrate and the mass flowrate of all the streams in the circuit, and the mill power draw. A worked example shows how the new ball mill scale-up procedure is executed. This worked example uses laboratory data to predict the performance of a full-scale re-grind mill circuit. This circuit consists of a ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The MI-scale ball mill has a diameter (inside liners) of 1.85m. The scale-up procedure shows that the full-scale circuit produces a product (hydrocyclone overflow) that has an 80% passing size of 80 mum. The circuit has a recirculating load of 173%. A new ball mill scale-up procedure is developed. This procedure has been validated using seven sets of Ml-scale ball mil data. The largest ball mills in these data have diameters (inside liners) of 6.58m. The procedure can predict the 80% passing size of the circuit product to within +/-6% of the measured value, with a precision of +/-11% (one standard deviation); the re-circulating load to within +/-33% of the mass-balanced value (this error margin is within the uncertainty associated with the determination of the re-circulating load); and the mill power to within +/-5% of the measured value. This procedure is applicable for the design of ball mills which are preceded by autogenous (AG) mills, semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, crushers and flotation circuits. The new procedure is more precise and more accurate than Bond's method for ball mill scale-up. This procedure contains no efficiency correction which relates to the mill diameter. This suggests that, within the range of mill diameter studied, milling efficiency does not vary with mill diameter. This is in contrast with Bond's equation-Bond claimed that milling efficiency increases with mill diameter. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A study was undertaken to determine the effects of five industrial frothers on the relationship between entrainment recovery and water recovery. The experiments were conducted using a Batequip rectangular 60-L steel flotation cell that was run in parallel with the first cell in a copper/silver prefloat rougher circuit. The concentration of the frothers ranged from 2.5 to 8.4 g/t. The experiments were repeated at three different froth depths. A power function was found to fit this relationship with no discontinuity in the relationship caused by the changes in frother type and concentration and froth depth.

Pecans from the cultivars Wichita and Western Schley [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] collected over three years were analyzed for the following constituents: total lipid content; fatty acid profiles; sucrose content; protein; total dietary fiber; the minerals magnesium, calcium, potassium, sulfur, phosphorus, boron, copper, iron, manganese, sodium, zinc, and aluminum; vitamin C; and lipase; and lipoxygenase activities. Year of harvest and cultivar had little effect on the composition of the pecans. Overall, protein content was the only constituent that differed between pecans grown in Australia and those grown in the United States. This difference is probably related to differences in growing location and horticultural practices between the two countries.

Nucleation and growth of the eutectic, in hypoeutectic Al-Si foundry alloys has been investigated by the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mapping technique using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Sample preparation procedures for optimizing mapping have been developed. To obtain a sufficiently smooth surface from a cast Al-Si eutectic microstructure for EBSD mapping, an appropriate preparation technique by ion milling was developed and applied instead of conventional electropolishing. By comparing the orientation of the aluminum in the eutectic to that of the surrounding primary aluminum dendrites, the growth mechanism of the eutectic can be determined. Two different results were found, in isolation or sometimes together, but distinct for different strontium contents: (1) crystallographic orientations of aluminum in eutectic and surrounding primary dendrites are identical, and (2) wide variation in orientations of the aluminum in the eutectic. Trace elements can have a significant effect on the processing and properties of aluminium alloys, including sintered alloys. As little as 0.07 wt% (100 ppm) lead, tin or indium promotes sintering in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy produced from mixed elemental powders. This is a liquid phase sintering system and thin liquid films form uniformly throughout the alloy in the presence of the trace elements, but liquid pools develop in their absence. Analytical transmission electron microscopy indicates that the trace elements are confined to the interparticle and grain boundary regions. The sintering enhancement is attributed to the segregation of the microalloying addition to the liquid-vapour interface. Because the microalloying elements have a low surface tension, they lower the effective surface tension of the liquid. This reduces the wetting angle and extends the spreading of the liquid through the matrix. An improvement in sintering results. (C) 2001 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. The development of a new product or a new process, if adopted by the market, may generate a number of economic processes including secondary innovations to promote the exploitation of the new discovery. Such technological advances may also promote new industrial ventures which may exist over many decades, enhancing economic development. The history of the adoption of the cyanide process for the extraction of gold from its ores exemplifies such developments. One outcome was the formation of an international cyanide cartel.

We extend a recent construction for an integrable model describing Josephson tunneling between identical BCS systems to the case where the BCS systems have different single particle energy levels. The exact solution of this generalized model is obtained through the Bethe ansatz.

This paper discusses the design and characterisation of a short, and hence portable impact load cell for in-situ quantification of ore breakage properties under impact loading conditions. Much literature has been published in the past two decades about impact load cells for ore breakage testing. It has been conclusively shown that such machines yield significant quantitative energy-fragmentation information about industrial ores. However, documented load cells are all laboratory systems that are not adapted for in-situ testing due to their dimensions and operating requirements. The authors report on a new portable impact load cell designed specifically for in-situ testing. The load cell is 1.5 m in height and weighs 30 kg. Its physical and operating characteristics are detailed in the paper. This includes physical dimensions, calibration and signal deconvolution. Emphasis is placed on the deconvolution issue, which is significant for such a short load cell. Finally, it is conclusively shown that the short load cell is quantitatively as accurate as its larger laboratory analogues. (C) 2062 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ten surveys of the ball milling circuit at the Mt Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator were conducted aiming to identify any changes in slurry theology caused by the use of chrome balls charge, and the associated effect on grinding performance. Slurry theology was measured using an on-line viscometer. The data were mass balanced and analysed with statistical tools. Comparison of the rheogram demonstrated that slurry density and fines content affected slurry rheology significantly, while the effect of the chrome ball charge being negligible. Statistical analysis showed the effects of mill throughput and cyclone efficiency on the Grinding Index (a term describing the overall breakage). There was no difference in the Grinding Index between using the chrome ball charge and the ordinary steel ball charge. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an integrated methodology for modelling froth zone performance in batch and continuously operated laboratory flotation cells. The methodology is based on a semi-empirical approach which relates the overall flotation rate constant to the froth depth (FD) in the flotation cell; from this relationship, a froth zone recovery (R,) can be extracted. Froth zone recovery, in turn, may be related to the froth retention time (FRT), defined as the ratio of froth volume to the volumetric flow rate of concentrate from the cell. An expansion of this relationship to account for particles recovered both by true flotation and entrainment provides a simple model that may be used to predict the froth performance in continuous tests from the results of laboratory batch experiments.
