Background: Automated measurement of LV function could extend the clinical utility of echo by less expert readers. We sought to define normal ranges of global 2D strain (2DS) and strain-rate (SR) in an international, multicenter study of healthy subjects, and to assess the determinants of variation. Methods: SR and 2DS were measured in 18 myocardial segts in both apical and short axis views of 227 normal subjects (38% men, 48±14y) with no cardiac history, risk factors or drug therapy. The association of age and resting hemodynamics with global strain indices was sought using multiple regression. Differences in variance were expressed as F values. Results: Baseline SBP was 127±18 mmHg, pulse was 76±13/min and ejection fraction 50±20%. Although global longitudinal strain was influenced by endsystolic volume (F=4.2, p

Background: Endothelial dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Apart from traditional risk factors complement activation and inflammation may trigger and sustain endothelial dysfunction. We sought to assess the association between endothelial function, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and markers of complement activation in patients with either stable or unstable coronary artery disease. Methods: We prospectively recruited 78 patients, 35 patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and 43 patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP). Endothelial function was assessed as brachial artery reactivity (BAR). Hs-CRP, C3a, C5a, and C1-Inhibitor (C1 inh.) were measured enzymatically. Results: Patients with IJAP showed higher median levels of hs-CRP and C3a compared to patients with SAP, while BAR was not significantly different between patient groups. In UAP patients, hs-CRP was significantly correlated with cholesterol (r = 0.27, p < 0.02), C3a (r = 0.32, p < 0.001) and C1 INH.(r = 0.41, p < 0.003), but not with flow mediated dilatation (r = 0.09, P = 0.41). Hs-CRP and C1 INH.were found to be independant predictors of IJAP in a backward stepwise logistic regression model. Conclusions: We conclude that both hs-CRP, a marker of inflammation and C3a, a marker of complement activation are elevated in patients with UAP, but not in patients with SAP. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. International business research has identified separately two distinct influences on the direction of firm internationalisation. One of those influences is psychic distance, the other is regionalisation. This paper sets out to test the influences of regionalisation and psychic distance on the direction of Australian merchandise exports. The paper applies a quantitative methodology using a multiple regression model on a large, purposively compiled data set. Unlike most previous outward internationalisation studies, which use the firm as the unit of analysis, this paper uses aggregated Australian export values by country destination and export category over an extended time period, 1990 to 2004. The findings show that regionalisation is the dominant influence on the direction of Australian merchandise exports. This has important trade policy implications for Australian state and federal governments, related export promotion agencies and for managers of Australian firms, as well as for international business researchers generally.

The rapid uptake of mobile devices has created the capacity to provide services to consumers while they are on the move, and new mobile services (m-services) are constantly emerging. In past research, personal attributes have been found to be important in the adoption and use of information and communication technology. However, little research has been conducted in the area of m-services. To explore factors influencing the use of these services, this paper examines personal attributes in terms of motivational, attitudinal and demographic characteristics. Specifically, it investigates the influence of innovativeness, self- efficacy, involvement and impulsiveness, as well as age and gender on m-services use. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 250 respondents using an online survey and a modified snowball procedure. Age and gender were quite well balanced in the sample. The multiple regression model was significant and the hypotheses relating to the positive relationship between impulsiveness, involvement and gender and m-services were supported. Findings are discussed, further implications for managers are suggested and directions for future research are proposed.

In Cambodia, grain yield in rainfed lowland rice is often affected by drought during late vegetative or reproductive stage. Several experiments were conducted to quantify the contribution of potential yield, drought tolerance and drought escape mechanisms to yield under water stress conditions. In total nine pairs of well irrigated and simulated drought (by draining water) experiments were conducted. Potential yield was obtained under irrigation. Grain yields and flowering dates were recorded in 15 varieties. Drought tolerance was quantified by using drought response index (DRI), which is grain yield under drought adjusted for potential yield and flowering date of the variety. Drought escape is expressed as days to flower under drought conditions. Mean yield reduction due to drought of nine experiments was 27 % (range 12-44). The relative contribution of yield potential, flowering date and DRI to observe yield under drought were evaluated by multiple regression for each experiment. Potential yield accounted for 54% (with a range of 10-80) of the variation in actual yield under drought. This was followed by DRI and flowering date with 34 (with a range of 0-60) and 12 (with a range of 0-30) of the contribution, respectively. It is concluded that selecting for drought tolerance as well as for high yield potential would be important in developing cultivars for rainfed lowlands in Cambodia. Although flowering dates are important for drought escape, it had a small contribution probably because drought developed slowly in these experiments in Cambodia.
