Separation of mercury (II), lead (II), and silver (I) from aqueous solution using an aminopolycarboxylate silica

A quartz crystal microbalance modified by the attachment of silica particles derivatized with the aminopolycarboxylate ligand N-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid has been employed to assess conditions under which mercury (II), lead (II), and silver (I) nitrates may be separated in aqueous solution. The separation protocol, which involved removal of Hg(II), as [HgI4](2-), and Pb(II) with H+ was successfully applied to a batchwise separation of the 3 metal ions.

Novel colloidal materials for high-throughput screening applications in drug discovery and genomics

Tracking the reaction history is the means of choice to identify bioactive compounds in large combinatorial libraries. The authors describe two approaches to synthesis on silica beads: a) addition of a reporter dye tag during each synthesis step (see Figure), which attaches itself to the bead by colloidal forces, and b) encapsulating arrays of fluorescent dyes into the beads to encode them uniquely, for recognition with a flow cytometer after each reaction step.

Using visual spatial search interface for WWW applications

Most Internet search engines are keyword-based. They are not efficient for the queries where geographical location is important, such as finding hotels within an area or close to a place of interest. A natural interface for spatial searching is a map, which can be used not only to display locations of search results but also to assist forming search conditions. A map-based search engine requires a well-designed visual interface that is intuitive to use yet flexible and expressive enough to support various types of spatial queries as well as aspatial queries. Similar to hyperlinks for text and images in an HTML page, spatial objects in a map should support hyperlinks. Such an interface needs to be scalable with the size of the geographical regions and the number of websites it covers. In spite of handling typically a very large amount of spatial data, a map-based search interface should meet the expectation of fast response time for interactive applications. In this paper we discuss general requirements and the design for a new map-based web search interface, focusing on integration with the WWW and visual spatial query interface. Broadsheet - Dendritic cells and their emerging clinical applications

Dendritic cells (DC) are now recognised as a unique leukocyte type, consisting of two or more subsets. The origins and functional inter-relationships of these cells are the subject of intense basic scientific investigation. They play important roles in initiating and directing immune responses, defending the host from pathogens and maintaining self tolerance. Fundamental studies are defining new molecules and mechanisms associated with DC function. The first methods for counting these rare blood cell populations are already providing interesting new clinical data. Indeed, abnormal DC function may contribute to deficiencies in the immune response against malignancies. Phase I trial data suggests that DC-based cancer vaccination protocols may contribute an important new biological approach to cancer therapy. Manipulation of DC to facilitate allogeneic transplantation and even to manage autoimmune disease are likely developments.
