Religious Information Poverty in Australian State Schools

This paper introduces the concept of religious information poverty in Australian state schools from an information science perspective. Information scientists have been theorising about the global information society for some time, along with its increased provision of vital information for the good of the world. Australian state schools see themselves as preparing children for effective participation in the information society, yet Australian children are currently suffering a religious illiteracy that undermines this goal. Some reasons and theories are offered to explain the existence of religious information poverty in state schools, and suggestions for professional stakeholders are offered for its alleviation.

Spin-glass dynamics

Spin glasses are magnetic systems with conflicting and random interactions between the individual spins. The dynamics of spin glasses, as of structural glasses, reflect their complexity. Both in experimental and numerical work the relaxation below the freezing temperature depends strongly on the annealing conditions (aging) and, above the freezing point, relaxation in equilibrium is slow and non-exponential, In this Forum, observed characteristics of the dynamics were summarized and the physical models proposed to explain them were outlined. Book review of: Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction Ruby Vuchinich & Nick Heather, eds

The body of work contained in Choice, Behavioural Economics and Addiction is the result of a conference held at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, 2002. The purpose of the conference was to bring together highly accredited international authors in the field of addiction research pertaining to behavioural choice theories. The conference provided a forum where these theories and their empirical implications could be discussed and debated. This book represents the conference proceedings and as such is a combination of journal articles that each relevant author has published plus additional comments from allocated reviewers.

"Futuristic medical education"

The Australian National Medical Education Colloquium provided a productive forum for medical educators to meet and to discuss and debate important contemporary issues affecting Australian medical schools. None of us know what the future will hold, and some of the possibilities discussed at the Colloquium were futuristic indeed. We would be wise to keep an open mind, to focus very much on competence and fitness to practice, and to develop a strong evidence base, as we travel this important path.
