A 20kg, 10-month-old male Kelpie developed a rapid onset of profound paresis progressing to flaccid paralysis and dyspnoea, followed by death about 36 hours after chewing on a partly discharged anti-bloat capsule from a dead cow. Intoxication by monensin in the capsule was considered the cause of death. No Lodes holocyclus were found on the dog. Evidence of muscle damage was seen in clinical biochemistry assays of plasma, but consent for necropsy was not obtained. The median lethal dose for Beagle dogs of the material contained in anti-bloat capsules is 0.5-1.0g. As this represents a serious toxicity risk if dogs chew these devises, the manufacturer includes a warning on potential dog toxicity in product literature.

Experimental studies have been undertaken, involving in situ observations of the interaction between cover gas mixtures and molten magnesium. It has been shown that, in the presence of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), the contact angle between solid MgO and molten magnesium is reduced, resulting in the wetting of MgO by magnesium metal. In contrast, it was observed that the absence of SF6 results in a large contact angle, poor wetting of the MgO by magnesium metal and a non-adherent surface film. It is proposed that the formation of an adherent, protective surface film under a cover gas mixture containing SF6 is due to capillary forces acting within the film.

PRL and placental lactogen (PL) play key roles in maintaining the rodent corpus luteum through pregnancy. Suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) have been shown to decrease cell sensitivity to cytokines, including PRL, and so here we have addressed the issue of whether luteolysis induced by prostaglandin F-2alpha (PGF(2alpha)) might up-regulate SOCS proteins to inhibit PRL signaling. In d 19 pregnant rats, cloprostenol, a PGF(2alpha) analog, rapidly induced transcripts for SOCS-3 and, to a lesser extent, SOCS-1. We also found increased SOCS-3 protein in the ovary by immunoblot and in the corpus luteum by immunohistochemistry. Increased SOCS-3 expression was preceded by an increase in STAT3 tyrosine phosphorylation 10 min after cloprostenol injection and was maintained for 4 h, as determined by gel shift and immunohistochemistry. Induction of SOCS-3 was accompanied by a sharp decrease in active STAT5, as determined by gel-shift assay and by loss of nuclear localized STAT5. Four hours after cloprostenol administration, the corpus luteum was refractory to stimulation of STAT5 by PRL administration, and this was not due to down-regulation of PRL receptor. Therefore, induction of SOCS-3 by PGF(2alpha) may be an important element in the initiation of luteolysis via rapid suppression of luteotropic support from PL.

Detailed microstructural evidence for the mechanism of the alpha-beta phase transformation in ytterbium SiAlON ceramics is presented. Grains, which show partial transformation, have been examined using transmission electron microscopy. We suggest that the transformation proceeds as a discernable reaction front and the accompanying lattice mismatch is accommodated be a series of complex dislocations. The stabilizing cation is ejected from the transformed alpha- phase and diffuse along the dislocation to accumulate as isolated pockets in a way similar to that observed in metal systems and termed pipe diffusion. High-resolution electron microscopy reveals the details of each of these features.

The diversity literature is replete with examples of poor outcomes in Culturally Heterogeneous Workgroups (CHWs) caused by relational difficulties. Although it is widely recognised that culture shapes people's interpretation of behavior and their style of interaction with others in the workplace, what is ill understood is what the specific conflict triggers of these conflicts are. In this paper, we argue that differences in cultural norms and views of physical and psychological space are major triggers of conflict in CHWs. Findings from a field study support the proposition that different viewpoints regarding the use of space, the inability to retreat from exposure to others, decreased interpersonal space, and privacy invasion moderate the relationship between cultural diversity in the workgroup and the type, frequency, and duration of conflict events in CHWs. The paper represents a first step in elucidating the role of space in cross-cultural interactions in the workplace and how space may be a potentially important conflict control mechanism for managers of culturally diverse workgroups.

Discharge grates play an important role in determining the performance of autogenous, semi-autogenous and grate discharge ball mills. The flow capacity (grinding capacity) of these mills is strongly influenced by the discharge grate design-open area and position of apertures, as well as the performance of the pulp lifters. As mill sizes have progressively increased and closed-circuiting has become more popular the importance of grate and pulp lifter design has grown. Unfortunately very few studies have concentrated on this aspect of mill performance. To remedy this a series of laboratory and pilot-scale tests were undertaken to study both the performance of grates on their own and in conjunction with pulp lifters. In this first paper of a two-part series the results from the grate-only experiments are presented and discussed, whilst the performance of the grate-pulp-lifter system is covered in the second paper. The results from the grate-only experiments have shown that the build-up of slurry (hold-up) inside the mill starts from the shoulder of the charge, while the toe position of the slurry progressively moves towards the toe of the charge with increasing flowrate. Besides grate design (open area and position of apertures), charge volume and mill speed were also found to have a strong influence on mill hold-up and interact with grate design variables. Activation of cyclin B-Cdc2 is an absolute requirement for entry into mitosis, but other protein kinase pathways that also have mitotic functions are activated during G(2)/M progression. The MAPK cascade has well established roles in entry and exit from mitosis in Xenopus, but relatively little is known about the regulation and function of this pathway in mammalian mitosis. Here we report a detailed analysis of the activity of all components of the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathway in HeLa cells during normal G(2)/M. The focus of this pathway is the dramatic activation of an endomembrane-associated MEK1 without the corresponding activation of the MEK substrate ERK. This is because of the uncoupling of MEK1 activation from ERK activation. The mechanism of this uncoupling involves the cyclin B-Cdc2-dependent proteolytic cleavage of the N-terminal ERK-binding domain of MEK1 and the phosphorylation of Thr(286). These results demonstrate that cyclin B-Cdc2 activity regulates signaling through the MAPK pathway in mitosis.

Specific neuronal mRNAs are localized in dendrites, often concentrated in dendritic spines and spine synapses, where they are translated. The molecular mechanism of localization is mostly unknown. Here we have explored the roles of A2 response element (A2RE), a cis-acting signal for oligodendrocyte RNA trafficking, and its cognate trans-acting factor, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein ( hnRNP) A2, in neurons. Fluorescently labeled chimeric RNAs containing A2RE were microinjected into hippocampal neurons, and RNA transport followed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. These RNA molecules, but not RNA lacking the A2RE sequence, were transported in granules to the distal neurites. hnRNP A2 protein was implicated as the cognate trans-acting factor: it was colocalized with RNA in cytoplasmic granules, and RNA trafficking in neurites was compromised by A2RE mutations that abrogate hnRNP A2 binding. Coinjection of antibodies to hnRNP A2 halved the number of trafficking cells, and treatment of neurons with antisense oligonucleotides also disrupted A2RE - RNA transport. Colchicine inhibited trafficking, whereas cells treated with cytochalasin were unaffected, implicating involvement of microtubules rather than microfilaments. A2RE-like sequences are found in a subset of dendritically localized mRNAs, which, together with these results, suggests that a molecular mechanism based on this cis-acting sequence may contribute to dendritic RNA localization.

A stickiness testing device based on the probe tack test has been designed and tested. It was used to perform in situ characterization of drying hemispherical drops with an initial radius 3.5 mm. Tests were carried out in two drying temperatures, 63 and 95 degreesC. Moisture and temperature histories of the drying drops of fructose, honey, sucrose, maltodextrin and sucrose-maltodextrin mixtures were determined. The rates of moisture evaporation of the fructose solution was the fastest while those of the maltodextrin solution was the lowest. A profile reversal was observed when the temperature profiles of these materials were compared. Different modes of failure were observed during the stickiness tests. Pure fructose and honey solutions remained completely sticky and failed cohesively until the end of drying. Pure sucrose solution remained sticky and failed cohesively until complete crystallization occurred. The surface of the maltodextrin drops formed a skin shortly after the start of drying. It exhibited adhesive failure and reached a state of non-adhesion. Addition of maltodextrin significantly altered the stickiness of sucrose solution. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
