The principle nematocidal agent present in a southern Australian marine sponge of the genus Echinodictyum has been isolated and identfied as the novel betaine (+)-echinobetaine B (6), and the structure assigned by spectroscopic analysis has been confirmed by total synthesis. Preliminary SAR conclusions are drawn from analysis of synthetic intermediates and the known marine metabolites zooanemonin (12) and norzooanemonin (13), and the new sponge metabolite norzooanemonin methyl ester (14). The latter compound is reported for the first time from a selection of Australian sponges, including an Axinyssa sp., a Niphates sp., an Axinella sp. and a Ptilocaulis sp.
Synthesis, crystal structure and herbicidal activity of mimics of intermediates of the KARI reaction
Resumo:
Two mimics of the intermediate in the reaction catalyzed by ketol-acid reductoisomerase (KARI) were synthesized. Their structures were established on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, H-1 NMR and GC/mass detector. The crystal structure of compound 2 was found to be a substituted dioxane, formed by the condensation of two molecules. The two compounds showed some herbicidal activity on the basis of tests using rape root and barnyard grass growth inhibition. However, the herbicidal effect was weaker in greenhouse tests. We discuss recent progress towards the establishment of important structure-property-function relationships in eumelanins-key functional bio-macromolecular systems responsible for photoprotection and immune response in humans, and implicated in the development of melanoma skin cancer. We focus on the link between eumelanin's secondary structure and optical properties such as broad band UV-visible absorption and strong non-radiative relaxation; both key features of the photo-protective function. We emphasise the insights gained through a holistic approach combining optical spectroscopy with first principles quantum chemical calculations, and advance the hypothesis that the robust functionality characteristic of eumelanin is related to extreme chemical and structural disorder at the secondary level. This inherent disorder is a low cost natural resource, and it is interesting to speculate as to whether it may play a role in other functional bio-macromolecular systems.

Purpose: To determine whether a significant relationship exists between fat mass (FM) development and physical activity (PA) and/or sugar-sweetened drink (SD) consumption in healthy boys and girls aged 8-19 yr. Methods: A total of 105 males and 103 females were assessed during childhood and adolescence for a maximum of 7 yr and a median of 5 yr. Height was measured biannually. Fat-free mass (FFM) and FM were assessed annually by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). PA was evaluated two to three times annually using the PAQ-C/A. Energy intake and SD were assessed using a 24-h dietary intake questionnaire also completed two to three times per year. Years from peak height velocity were used as a biological maturity age indicator. Multilevel random effects models were used to test the relationship. Results: When controlling for maturation, FFM, and energy intake adjusted for SD, PA level was negatively related to FM development in males (P < 0.05) but not in females (P > 0.05). In contrast, there was no relationship between SD and FM development of males or females (P > 0.05). There was also no interaction effect between SD and PA (P > 0.05) with FM development. Conclusion: This finding tends support to the idea that increasing PA in male youths aids in the control of FM development. Models employed showed no relationship between SD and FM in either gender.

Single phase (Zn,Fe)(1-x) O zincite solid solution samples have been prepared by high temperature equilibration in air and in reducing atmospheres, followed by quenching to room temperature. The Fe2+/Fe3+ concentrations in the samples have been determined using wet chemical and XPS techniques. Iron is found to be present in zincite predominantly in the form of Fe3+ ions. The transition from an equiaxed grain morphology to plate-like zincite crystals is shown to be associated with increasing Fe3+ concentration, increasing elongation in < 001 > of the hexagonal crystals and increasing anisotropic strain along the c-axis. The plate-like crystals are shown to contain planar defects and zincite polytypes at high iron concentrations.
