Numerical optimisation methods are being more commonly applied to agricultural systems models, to identify the most profitable management strategies. The available optimisation algorithms are reviewed and compared, with literature and our studies identifying evolutionary algorithms (including genetic algorithms) as superior in this regard to simulated annealing, tabu search, hill-climbing, and direct-search methods. Results of a complex beef property optimisation, using a real-value genetic algorithm, are presented. The relative contributions of the range of operational options and parameters of this method are discussed, and general recommendations listed to assist practitioners applying evolutionary algorithms to the solution of agricultural systems. A software package that efficiently solves a comprehensive range of problems based on coupled complex nonlinear stochastic ODEs and PDEs is outlined. Its input and output syntax is formulated as a subset of XML, thus making a step towards a standard for specifying numerical simulations.

Objectives Low doses of ACTH [1-24] (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mug per 1.73 m(2)) may provide a more physiological level of adrenal stimulation than the standard 250 mug test, but not all studies have concluded that the 1.0 fig is a more sensitive screening test for central hypoadrenalism. Eight-hour infusions of high dose ACTH [1-24] have also been suggested as a means of assessing the adrenals' capacity for sustained cortisol secretion. In this study, we compared the diagnostic accuracy of three low dose ACTH tests (LDTs) and the 8-h infusion with the standard 250 jig test (HDT) and the insulin hypoglycaemia test (IHT) in patients with hypothalamic-pituitary disease. Subjects and design Three groups of subjects were studied. A healthy control group (group 1, n=9) and 33 patients with known hypothalamic or pituitary disease who were divided into group 2 (n=12, underwent IHT) and group 3 (n=21, IHT contraindicated). Six different tests were performed: a standard IHT (0.15 U/kg soluble insulin); a 60-minute 250 mug HDT; three different LDTs using 0.1 mug, 0.5 mug and 1.0 mug (all per 1.73 m(2)); and an 8-h infusion test (250 mug ACTH [1-24] at a constant rate over 8 h). Results Nine out of the 12 patients in group 2 failed the IHT. Three out of 12 patients from group 2 who clearly passed the IHT, also passed all the ACTH [1-24] stimulation tests. Despite evidence linking shrimp farming to several cases of environmental degradation, there remains a lack of ecologically meaningful information about the impacts of effluent on receiving waters. The aim of this study was to determine the biological impact of shrimp farm effluent, and to compare and distinguish its impacts from treated sewage effluent. Analyses included standard water quality/sediment parameters, as well as biological indicators including tissue nitrogen (N) content, stable isotope ratio of nitrogen (delta N-15) and amino acid composition of inhabitant seagrasses, mangroves and macroalgae. The study area consisted of two tidal creeks, one receiving effluent from a sewage treatment plant and the other from an intensive shrimp farm. The creeks discharged into the western side of Moreton Bay, a sub-tropical coastal embayment on the east coast of Australia. Characterization of water quality revealed significant differences between the creeks, and with unimpacted eastern Moreton Bay. The sewage creek had higher concentrations of dissolved nutrients (predominantly NO3-/NO2- and PO43-, compared to NH4+ in the shrimp creek). In contrast, the shrimp creek was more turbid and had higher phytoplankton productivity. Beyond 750 m from the creek mouths, water quality parameters were indistinguishable from eastern Moreton Bay values. Biological indicators detected significant impacts up to 4 km beyond the creek mouths (reference site). Elevated plant delta N-15 values ranged from 10.4-19.6 parts per thousand at the site of sewage discharge to 2.9-4.5 parts per thousand at the reference site. The free amino acid concentration and composition of seagrass and macroalgae was used to distinguish between the uptake of sewage and shrimp derived N. Proline (seagrass) and serine (macroalgae) were high in sewage impacted plants and glutamine (seagrass) and alanine (macroalgae) were high in plants impacted by shrimp effluent. The delta N-15 isotopic signatures and free amino acid composition of inhabitant flora indicated that sewage N extended further from the creek mouths than shrimp N. The combination of physical/chemical and biological indicators used in this study was effective in distinguishing the composition and subsequent impacts of aquaculture and sewage effluent on the receiving waters. By exhibiting a violation of a novel form of the Bell-CHSH inequality, Żukowski has recently established that the quantum correlations exploited in the standard perfect teleportation protocol cannot be recovered by any local hidden variables model. In the case of imperfect teleportation, we show that a violation of a generalized form of Żukowski's teleportation inequality can only occur if the channel state, considered by itself, already violates a Bell-CHSH inequality. On the other hand, the fact that the channel state violates a Bell-CHSH inequality is not sufficient to imply a violation of Żukowski's teleportation inequality (or any of its generalizations). The implication does hold, however, if the fidelity of the teleportation exceeds ≈ 0.90. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an integrated methodology for modelling froth zone performance in batch and continuously operated laboratory flotation cells. The methodology is based on a semi-empirical approach which relates the overall flotation rate constant to the froth depth (FD) in the flotation cell; from this relationship, a froth zone recovery (R,) can be extracted. Froth zone recovery, in turn, may be related to the froth retention time (FRT), defined as the ratio of froth volume to the volumetric flow rate of concentrate from the cell. An expansion of this relationship to account for particles recovered both by true flotation and entrainment provides a simple model that may be used to predict the froth performance in continuous tests from the results of laboratory batch experiments. In this paper, we report our modelling evaluation on the effect of tracer density on axial dispersion in a batch oscillatory baffled column (OBC). Tracer solution of potassium nitrite, its specific density ranged from 1.0 to 1.5, was used in the study, and was injected to the vertical column from either the top or bottom. Local concentration profiles are measured using conductivity probes at two locations along the height of the column. Using the experimental measured concentration profiles together with both 'Tank-in-Series' and 'Plug Flow with Axial Dispersion' models, axial dispersion coefficients were determined and used to describe the effect of specific tracer density on mixing in the OBC. The results showed that the axial dispersion coefficients evaluated by the two models are very similar in both magnitudes and trends, and the range of variations in such coefficients is generally larger for the bottom injection than for the top one. Empirical correlations linking the mechanical energy for mixing, the specific density of tracer and axial dispersion coefficient were established. Using these correlations, we identified the enhancements of up to 269% on axial dispersion for various specific tracer densities. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
