In Cambodia, grain yield in rainfed lowland rice is often affected by drought during late vegetative or reproductive stage. Several experiments were conducted to quantify the contribution of potential yield, drought tolerance and drought escape mechanisms to yield under water stress conditions. In total nine pairs of well irrigated and simulated drought (by draining water) experiments were conducted. Potential yield was obtained under irrigation. Grain yields and flowering dates were recorded in 15 varieties. Drought tolerance was quantified by using drought response index (DRI), which is grain yield under drought adjusted for potential yield and flowering date of the variety. Drought escape is expressed as days to flower under drought conditions. Mean yield reduction due to drought of nine experiments was 27 % (range 12-44). The relative contribution of yield potential, flowering date and DRI to observe yield under drought were evaluated by multiple regression for each experiment. Potential yield accounted for 54% (with a range of 10-80) of the variation in actual yield under drought. This was followed by DRI and flowering date with 34 (with a range of 0-60) and 12 (with a range of 0-30) of the contribution, respectively. It is concluded that selecting for drought tolerance as well as for high yield potential would be important in developing cultivars for rainfed lowlands in Cambodia. Although flowering dates are important for drought escape, it had a small contribution probably because drought developed slowly in these experiments in Cambodia.

Dynamic rheological behaviour of starch-honey systems was studied using a strain-controlled rheometer. A dynamic temperature (30-130 degreesC) ramp test was used at 10 rad s(-1) frequency, 1% strain, 2 degreesC min(-1) ramp rate, 25 mm parallel plate, and 1.5 min gap, using Wheaten cornflour(TM) and five honeys to generate 25 formulations (0.34-0.80 g water/g dry starch). G', G, and eta* increased upon gelatinisation, and they reduced as the honey content was increased. For all the formulations, G' was higher than G, and tan 6 was generally less than 1.0. Key gelatinisation characterising temperatures (onset, peak and end) ranged from 96.0 to 122.3 degreesC, but did not vary much (CV < 5%) for each honey irrespective of the concentration. The influence of water, fructose and glucose, singly and in combination, on gelatinisation indices (temperature and rheological parameters) was investigated. An exponential equation was employed to describe the relationship, and relevant parameters were obtained. The consequences of the observations in the study are discussed particularly as they relate to extrusion of such systems, and possible interactions between fructose and glucose in the starch-honey systems. Background and Aims The morphogenesis and architecture of a rice plant, Oryza sativa, are critical factors in the yield equation, but they are not well studied because of the lack of appropriate tools for 3D measurement. The architecture of rice plants is characterized by a large number of tillers and leaves. The aims of this study were to specify rice plant architecture and to find appropriate functions to represent the 3D growth across all growth stages. Methods A japonica type rice, 'Namaga', was grown in pots under outdoor conditions. A 3D digitizer was used to measure the rice plant structure at intervals from the young seedling stage to maturity. The L-system formalism was applied to create '3D virtual rice' plants, incorporating models of phenological development and leaf emergence period as a function of temperature and photoperiod, which were used to determine the timing of tiller emergence. Key Results The relationships between the nodal positions and leaf lengths, leaf angles and tiller angles were analysed and used to determine growth functions for the models. The '3D virtual rice' reproduces the structural development of isolated plants and provides a good estimation of the fillering process, and of the accumulation of leaves. Conclusions The results indicated that the '3D virtual rice' has a possibility to demonstrate the differences in the structure and development between cultivars and under different environmental conditions. Future work, necessary to reflect both cultivar and environmental effects on the model performance, and to link with physiological models, is proposed in the discussion.
