Genetic algorithms (GAs) are known to locate the global optimal solution provided sufficient population and/or generation is used. Practically, a near-optimal satisfactory result can be found by Gas with a limited number of generations. In wireless communications, the exhaustive searching approach is widely applied to many techniques, such as maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) and distance spectrum (DS) techniques. The complexity of the exhaustive searching approach in the MLD or the DS technique is exponential in the number of transmit antennas and the size of the signal constellation for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. If a large number of antennas and a large size of signal constellations, e.g. PSK and QAM, are employed in the MIMO systems, the exhaustive searching approach becomes impractical and time consuming. In this paper, the GAs are applied to the MLD and DS techniques to provide a near-optimal performance with a reduced computational complexity for the MIMO systems. Two different GA-based efficient searching approaches are proposed for the MLD and DS techniques, respectively. The first proposed approach is based on a GA with sharing function method, which is employed to locate the multiple solutions of the distance spectrum for the Space-time Trellis Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (STTC-OFDM) systems. The second approach is the GA-based MLD that attempts to find the closest point to the transmitted signal. The proposed approach can return a satisfactory result with a good initial signal vector provided to the GA. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed GA-based efficient searching approaches can achieve near-optimal performance, but with a lower searching complexity comparing with the original MLD and DS techniques for the MIMO systems.

Foreign exchange trading has emerged recently as a significant activity in many countries. As with most forms of trading, the activity is influenced by many random parameters so that the creation of a system that effectively emulates the trading process will be very helpful. A major issue for traders in the deregulated Foreign Exchange Market is when to sell and when to buy a particular currency in order to maximize profit. This paper presents novel trading strategies based on the machine learning methods of genetic algorithms and reinforcement learning.

We introduce methods for clock synchronization that make use of the adiabatic exchange of nondegenerate two-level quantum systems: ticking qubits. Schemes involving the exchange of N independent qubits with frequency omega give a synchronization accuracy that scales as (omega root N)(-1)-i.e., as the standard quantum limit. We introduce a protocol that makes use of N-c coherent exchanges of a single qubit at frequency omega, leading to an accuracy that scales as (omega N-c)(-1) ln N-c. This protocol beats the standard quantum limit without the use of entanglement, and we argue that this scaling is the fundamental limit for clock synchronization allowed by quantum mechanics. We analyze the performance of these protocols when used with a lossy channel.

To maximise data output from single-shot astronomical images, the rejection of cosmic rays is important. We present the results of a benchmark trial comparing various cosmic ray rejection algorithms. The procedures assess relative performances and characteristics of the processes in cosmic ray detection, rates of false detections of true objects, and the quality of image cleaning and reconstruction. The cosmic ray rejection algorithms developed by Rhoads (2000, PASP, 112, 703), van Dokkum (2001, PASP, 113, 1420), Pych (2004, PASP, 116, 148), and the IRAF task xzap by Dickinson are tested using both simulated and real data. It is found that detection efficiency is independent of the density of cosmic rays in an image, being more strongly affected by the density of real objects in the field. As expected, spurious detections and alterations to real data in the cleaning process are also significantly increased by high object densities. We find the Rhoads' linear filtering method to produce the best performance in the detection of cosmic ray events; however, the popular van Dokkum algorithm exhibits the highest overall performance in terms of detection and cleaning.

Anterior knee pain (AKP) is common and has been argued to be related to poor patellofemoral joint control due to impaired coordination of the vasti muscles. However, there are conflicting data. Changes in motor unit firing may provide more definitive evidence. Synchronization of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) in vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) may contribute to coordination in patellofemoral joint control. We hypothesized that synchronization may be reduced in AKP. Recordings of single MUAPs were made from VMO and multiunit electromyograph (EMG) recordings were made from VL. Averages of VL EMG recordings were triggered from the single MUAPs in VMO. Motor units in VL firing in association with the VMO motor units would appear as a peak in the VL EMG average. Data were compared to previous normative data. The proportion of trials in which a peak was identified in the triggered averages of VL EMG was reduced in people with AKP (38%) compared to controls (90%). Notably, although 80% of subjects had values less than controls, 20% were within normal limits. These results provide new evidence that motor unit synchronization is modified in the presence of pain and provide evidence for motor control dysfunction in AKP. Perspective: This study shows that coordination of motor units between the medial and lateral vasti muscles in people with anterior knee pain is reduced compared to people without knee pain. It confirms that motor control dysfunction is a factor in this condition and has implications for selection of rehabilitation strategies. (c) 2005 by the American Pain Society.

Objective: Accurate neuromuscular control of the patellofemoral joint is important in knee joint mechanics. Strategies to coordinate the vasti muscles, such as motor unit synchronization, may simplify control of patellar tracking. This study investigated motor unit synchronization between vastus medialis (VM) and lateralis (VL). Methods: Electromyographic (EMG) recordings of single motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) were made from VM and single- and multi-unit recordings were made from VL. Synchronization was quantified from peaks in the cross-correlogram generated from single MUAP pairs in VL and VM. The proportion of motor units in VM with synchronized firing in VL was also quantified from peaks in averages of multiunit VL EMG triggered from the VM MUAP. Results: A high degree of synchronization of motor unit firing between VM and VL was identified. Results were similar for cross-correlation (similar to 45% of cases) and triggered averages (similar to 41% of cases). Conclusions: The data suggest that synchronization between VM and VL is higher than expected. Agreement between traditional cross-correlation and triggered averaging methods suggest that this new technique may provide a more clinically viable method to quantify synchronization. Significance: High synchronization between VM and VL may provide a solution to simplify control of the mechanically unstable patellofemoral joint. Objectives: To investigate motor unit synchronization between medial and lateral vasti and whether such synchronization differs in closed and open chain tasks. Design: Electromyographic recordings of single motor unit action potentials were made from the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and multiunit recordings from vastus lateralis during isometric contractions at 30 degrees of knee flexion in closed and open chain conditions. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: Five volunteers with no history of knee pain (age, 30 +/- 3.32y). Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measure: The degree of synchronization between motor unit firing was evaluated by identifying peaks in the electromyographic averages of the vastus lateralis, triggered from motor unit action potentials in the VMO, and the proportion of power in the power spectral density of the triggered average at the firing frequency of the reference motor unit. The proportion of cases in which there was significant power and peaks in the triggered averages was calculated. Results: The proportion of trials with peaks in the triggered averages of the vastus lateralis electromyographic activity was greater than 61.5% in all tasks, and there was a significantly greater proportion of cases where power in the spectrum was greater than 7.5% (P = .01) for the closed chain condition. Conclusions: There was a high proportion of synchronized motor units between the 2 muscles during isometric contractions, with evidence for greater common drive between the VMO and vastus lateralis in closed chain tasks. This has implications for rehabilitation because it suggests that closed chain tasks may generate better coordination between the vasti muscles.

Beyond the inherent technical challenges, current research into the three dimensional surface correspondence problem is hampered by a lack of uniform terminology, an abundance of application specific algorithms, and the absence of a consistent model for comparing existing approaches and developing new ones. This paper addresses these challenges by presenting a framework for analysing, comparing, developing, and implementing surface correspondence algorithms. The framework uses five distinct stages to establish correspondence between surfaces. It is general, encompassing a wide variety of existing techniques, and flexible, facilitating the synthesis of new correspondence algorithms. This paper presents a review of existing surface correspondence algorithms, and shows how they fit into the correspondence framework. It also shows how the framework can be used to analyse and compare existing algorithms and develop new algorithms using the framework's modular structure. Six algorithms, four existing and two new, are implemented using the framework. Each implemented algorithm is used to match a number of surface pairs. Results demonstrate that the correspondence framework implementations are faithful implementations of existing algorithms, and that powerful new surface correspondence algorithms can be created. Activity of the vasti has been argued to vary through knee range of movement due to changes in passive support of the patellofemoral joint and the relative contribution of these muscles to knee extension. Efficient function of the knee is dependent on optimal control of the patellofemoral joint, largely through coordinated activity of the medial and lateral quadriceps. Motor unit synchronization may provide a mechanism to coordinate the activity of vastus medialis (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL), and may be more critical in positions of reduced passive support for the patellofemoral joint (i.e., full extension). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether the degree of motor unit synchronization between the vasti muscles is dependent on joint angle. Electromyographic (EMG) recordings of single motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) were made from VMO and multiunit recordings from VL during isometric contractions of the quadriceps at 0 degrees, 30 degrees, and 60 degrees of knee flexion. The degree of synchronization between motor unit firing was evaluated by identification of peaks in the rectified EMG averages of VL, triggered from MUA-Ps in VMO. The proportion of cases in which there was a significant peak in the triggered averages was calculated. There was no significant difference in the degree of synchronization between the vasti at different knee angles (p = 0.57). These data suggest that this basic coordinative mechanism between the vasti muscles is controlled consistently throughout knee range of motion, and is not augmented at specific angles where the requirement for dynamic control of stability is increased. The estimation of P(S-n > u) by simulation, where S, is the sum of independent. identically distributed random varibles Y-1,..., Y-n, is of importance in many applications. We propose two simulation estimators based upon the identity P(S-n > u) = nP(S, > u, M-n = Y-n), where M-n = max(Y-1,..., Y-n). One estimator uses importance sampling (for Y-n only), and the other uses conditional Monte Carlo conditioning upon Y1,..., Yn-1. Properties of the relative error of the estimators are derived and a numerical study given in terms of the M/G/1 queue in which n is replaced by an independent geometric random variable N. The conclusion is that the new estimators compare extremely favorably with previous ones. In particular, the conditional Monte Carlo estimator is the first heavy-tailed example of an estimator with bounded relative error. Further improvements are obtained in the random-N case, by incorporating control variates and stratification techniques into the new estimation procedures.

Selleri's arguments that a consideration of noninertial reference frames in the framework of special relativity identify absolute simultaneity as being Nature's choice of synchronization are considered. In the case of rectilinearly accelerating rockets, it is argued by considering two rockets which maintain a fixed proper separation rather than a fixed separation relative to the inertial frame in which they start from rest, that what seems the most natural choice for a simultaneity convention is problem-dependent and that Einstein's definition is the most natural (though still conventional) choice in this case. In addition, the supposed problems special relativity has with treating a rotating disk, namely how a pulse of light traveling around the circumference of the disk can have a local speed of light equal to c everywhere but a global speed not equal to c, and how coordinate transformations to the disk can give the Lorentz transformations in the limit of large disk radius but small angular velocity, are addressed. It is shown that the theory of Fermi frames solves both of these problems. It is also argued that the question of defining simultaneity relative to a uniformly rotating disk does riot need to be resolved in order to resolve Ehrenfest's paradox.

In this letter, we propose a class of self-stabilizing learning algorithms for minor component analysis (MCA), which includes a few well-known MCA learning algorithms. Self-stabilizing means that the sign of the weight vector length change is independent of the presented input vector. For these algorithms, rigorous global convergence proof is given and the convergence rate is also discussed. By combining the positive properties of these algorithms, a new learning algorithm is proposed which can improve the performance. Simulations are employed to confirm our theoretical results.
