Alumina intercalated laponite (Al-laponite) was prepared with a polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfactant and used as supports of nickel catalysts for the carbon dioxide reforming reaction with methane to synthesis gas. The effects of the supports of intercalated laponite and catalyst preparation on catalytic activity, stability and carbon deposition were investigated for the above reforming reaction. We found that the pore structure of the Al-laponite supports can be tailored with the surfactant and the catalyst with well-developed porosity exhibited higher catalytic activity and a longer time of catalyst stability. It is believed that surface instabilities can occur during the extrusion of linear low density polyethylene due to high extensional stresses at the exit of the die. Local crack development can occur at a critical stress level when melt rupture is reached. This high extensional stress results from the rearrangement of the flow at the boundary transition between the wall exit and the free surface. The stress is highest at the extrudate surface and decreases into the bulk of the material. The location of the region where the critical level is reached can determine the amplitude of the extrudate surface distortion, This paper studies the effect of wall slip on the numerically simulated extensional stress level at the die exit and correlates this to the experimentally determined amplitude of the surface instability. The effect of die exit radius and die wall roughness on extrusion surface instabilities is also correlated to the exit stress level in the same way. Whereas full slip may completely suppress the surface instability, a reduction in the exit stress level and instability amplitude is also shown for a rounded die exit and a slight increase in instability is shown to result from a rough die wall. A surface instability map demonstrates how the shear rate for onset of extrusion surface instabilities can be predicted on the basis of melt strength measurements and simulated stress peaks at the exit of the die. Past studies from our laboratory have shown that whole immature, or mature sliced, zygotic embryos are a very good starting explant for coconut somatic embryogenesis. The highest rate of somatic embryogenesis was obtained when certain polyamines were added into the culture medium as well as activated charcoal (AC) to absorb unwanted phenolics. These past studies also showed that the development and maturation of the somatic embryos produced could be improved by the addition of abscisic acid (ABA), alone or with one of several osmotically active agents, into the culture medium. In the present study this well characterised somatic embryogenic system for zygotic tissues is being modified and applied to somatic tissues. This recent approach should be a better method for the rapid production of clonal, true-to-type coconut palms. The present research approach is focused on young leaf section explants which have been found to be very responsive to callus production. Young leaf sections produced optimum callus when cultured on media containing 2,4-D (150 μM) and the amount produced could be increased by soaking the sections in sterile water (15 to 60 minutes) or ascorbic acid (15 to 30 minutes) prior to culturing. Further improvement in callus production, as well as a reduction in the time taken for callogenesis was obtained when casein hydrolysate and/or certain polyamines were added to the callus induction medium. The development of the somatic embryos was improved by using ABA and polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the maturation medium. Despite these initial successes in improving coconut somatic embryogenesis, further studies are now being considered to shorten the time to achieve somatic embryogenesis, to better germinate somatic embryos and to improve the rate of somatic seedling conversion into plantlets.

This paper presents a numerical study of fluidized-bed coating on thin plates using an orthogonal collocation technique. Inclusion of the latent heat of fusion term in the boundary conditions of the mathematical model accounts for the fact that some polymer powders used in coating may be partially crystalline. Predictions of coating thickness on flat plates were made with actual polymers used in fluidized-bed coating. Reasonably good agreement between numerical predictions of the coating thickness and experimental coating data of Richart was obtained for steel panels preheated to 316 degreesC. A good agreement was also obtained between numerical predictions and our coating thickness data for nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. Predicted coating thickness for polyethylene powder on flat plates were obtained with values of heat transfer coefficient closer to those obtained from our experiments. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Quaternary ammonium surfactants were used to control the pore structure of bentonite intercalated with a mixed hydro-sol of silicon and titanium. Porous clay heterostructures of alumina and laponite were prepared in the presence of polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfactants. Participation of the surfactants in the synthesis results in significant changes in the structure of porous clay products. Surfactants are involved in different mechanisms, In the case of bentonite, the mean size of the framework pores was directly proportional to the chain length of the quaternary ammonium surfactants. This indicates a molecular templating mechanism, similar to that observed in the synthesis of MCM41. However, in the case of laponite, the size and volume of the mesopores were related to the amount of PEO surfactants used. By using an appropriate surfactant, we can obtain highly porous clays with various pore structures. Introducing surfactants during intercalation is an efficient strategy for the molecular engineering of porous clay adsorbents and catalysts. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The characteristics of sharkskin surface instability for linear low density polyethylene are studied as a function of film blowing processing conditions. By means of scanning electron microscopy and surface profilometry, is it found that for the standard industrial die geometry studied, sharkskin only occurs on the inside of the film bubble. Previous work suggests that this instability may be due to critical extensional stress levels at the exit of the die. Isothermal integral viscoelastic simulations of the annular extrusion process are reported, and confirm that the extensional stress at the die exit is large enough to cause local melt rupture. However the extensional stress level at the outer die wall predicts melt rupture of the outside bubble surface also, which contradicts the experimental findings. A significant temperature gradient is expected to exist across the die gap at the exit of the die, due to the external heating of the die and the low conductivity, of the polymer melt. It is shown that a gradient of 20 degreesC is required to cause sharkskin to only appear on the inner bubble surface.

This is the first report of surface-active phospholipid as the boundary lubricant in total hip arthroplasty. Aspirate and rinsings from the bearing surfaces of 25 revision operations and one primary surgery were analyzed from 3 weeks to 26 years postoperatively. All samples contained substantial amounts of surface-active phospholipids ranging from 14 to 4186 μg. These findings indicate that synoviocytes continue producing the lubricant in significant quantities after arthroplasty surgery independent of the type of joint replacement and its fixation. Surface-active phospholipid was found on all bearing surfaces analyzed including polyethylene, stainless steel, chrome cobalt, alumina, zirconia, and titanium.

Plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH) were measured in the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) pouch young from 25 through to 198 days post-partum (n=71). GH concentrations were highest early in pouch life (around 100 ng/ml), and thereafter declined in an exponential fashion to reach adult concentrations (10.8 +/- 1.8 ng/ml; n=21) by approximately 121-145 days post-partum, one to two months before the young is weaned. Growth hormone-binding protein (GHBP), which has been shown to modify the cellular actions of GH in eutherian mammals, was identified for the first time in a marsupial. Based on size exclusion gel filtration, possum GHBP had an estimated molecular mass of approximate to 65 kDa, similar to that identified in other mammalian species, and binding of I-125-labelled human GH (hGH) was displaced by excess hGH (20 mug). An immunoprecipitation method, in which plasma GHBP was rendered polyethylene glycol precipitable with a monoclonal antibody to the rabbit GHBP/GH receptor (MAb 43) and labelled with I-125-hGH, was used to quantitate plasma GHBP by Scatchard analysis in the developing (pooled plasma samples) and adult (individual animals) possums. Binding affinity (K-a) values in pouch young aged between 45 and 54 and 144 and 153 days post-partum varied between 1.0 and 2.4 x 10(9)/M, which was slightly higher than that in adult plasma (0.96 +/- 0.2 x 10(9)/M, n = 6). Binding capacity (B-max) values increased from non-detectable levels in animals aged 25-38 days post-partum to reach concentrations around half that seen in the adult (1.4 +/- 0.2 x 10(-9) M) by about 117 days post-partum and remained at this level until 153 days post-partum. Therefore, in early pouch life when plasma GH concentrations are highest, the very low concentrations of GHBP are unlikely to be important in terms of competing with GH-receptor for ligand or altering the half-life of circulating GH.

In recent years, progress has been made in modelling long chain branched polymers by the introduction of the so-called pompom model. Initially developed by McLeish and Larson (1998), the model has undergone several improvements or alterations, leading to the development of new formulations. Some of these formulations however suffer from certain mathematical defects. The purpose of the present paper is to review some of the formulations of the pom-pom constitutive model, and to investigate their possible mathematical defects. Next, an alternative formulation is proposed, which does not appear to exhibit mathematical defects, and we explore its modelling performance by comparing the predictions with experiments in non-trivial rheometric flows of an LDPE melt. The selected rheometric flows are the double step strain, as well as the large amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. For LAOS experiments, the comparison involves the use of Fourier-transform analysis.

The effects of copolymer composition and microstructure on the radiation chemistry of styrene/alkane and alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers have been studied. The primary radical species formed on radiolysis of the copolymers at 77 K, and identified by ESR spectroscopy, are the same as those formed during radiolysis of the homopolymers. The yields of radicals for the copolymer are as predicted assuming that the cross-section is proportional to the electron density of each component; however, there is some evidence of radical migration to aromatic groups at 77 K. Changes in molecular structure on irradiation were detected by using C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Evidence of the consumption of terminal double bonds, and chain scission in alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers was found. Measurements of viscosity supported the mechanism of cross-linking predominating in styrene/alkane copolymers, while in alpha-methylstyrene/alkane copolymers chain scission was the major result of irradiation. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropyI vinyl ether), PFA, was grafted with styrene from the vapor phase using a simultaneous radiation grafting method. The graft yields were measured as a function of the dose and dose rate and were found to be initially linearly dependent on the dose and independent of the dose rate up to dose rates of similar to3 kGy/h. However, at a dose rate of 6.2 kGy/h, the slope of the yield-grafting time plot decreased. Raman depth profiles of the grafts showed that the polystyrene concentrations were greatest near the surface of the grafted samples and decreased with depth. The maximum penetration depth of the graft depended on the radiation dose for a fixed dose rate. Fmoc-Rink loading tests showed that the grafts displayed superior loading compared to grafts prepared from bulk styrene or from styrene solutions other than methanol.
