Wrasses (Labridae) are the second largest family of fishes on the: Great Barrier Reef (after the Gobiidae) and, in terms of morphology and lifestyle, one of the most diverse. They occupy all zones of the reef from the very shadow reef flats to deep slopes, feeding on a variety of fauna. Many wrasses also have elaborately patterned bodies and reflect a range of colours from ultraviolet (UV) to far red. As a first step to investigating the visual system of these fishes we measured the transmission properties of the ocular media of 36 species from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, and Hawaii, California and the Florida Keys, USA. Transmission measurements were made of whole eyes with a window cut into the back, and also of isolated lenses and corneas. Based on the transmission properties of the corneas the species could be split into two distinct groups within which the exact wavelength of the cut-off was variable. One group had visibly yellow corneas, while the corneas of the other group appeared clear to human observers. Five species had ocular media that transmitted wavelengths below 400 nm, making a perception of UV wavelengths for those species possible. Possible functional roles for the different filler types are discussed.

Mesoporous Ti-substituted aluminophosphates (AlPOs) with a hexagonal, cubic and lamellar pore structure, characteristic of MCM-41, MCM-48. and MCM-50, respectively, were synthesized. The stability of these mesophases upon template removal was studied. The pore structures, surface properties, and local atom environments of Al, P, and Ti of the hexagonal and cubic Ti-containing mesoporous products were extensively characterized using X-ray diffraction, magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, AAS, XPS, ultraviolet-visible, and adsorption of nitrogen and water vapor techniques while the lamellar mesophase was not further characterized due to its very poor thermal stability. Ti-containing mesoporous AlPO materials show a reasonable thermal stability upon template removal, a hydrophilic surface property, and high porosity showing application potentials in catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons. It is possible to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars spectroscopically if the spectra obtained during galaxy surveys are searched for the presence of quasar emission lines. The up-coming 6 degree Field (6dF) redshift survey on the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope will involve obtaining similar to 10(5) spectra of near-infrared selected galaxies to a magnitude limit of K = 13. Applying previously developed techniques implies that at least one lens should be discovered in the 6dF survey, but that as many as ten could be found if quasars typically have B-J - K similar or equal to 8. In this model there could be up to fifty lensed quasars in the, sample, but most of them could only be detected by infrared spectroscopy.

The C-type natriuretic peptide from the platypus venom (OvCNP) exists in two forms, OvCNPa and OvCNPb, whose amino acid sequences are identical. Through the use of nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and peptidase digestion studies, we discovered that OvCNPb incorporates a D-amino acid at position 2 in the primary structure. Peptides containing a D-amino acid have been found in lower forms of organism, but this report is the first for a D-amino acid in a biologically active peptide from a mammal. The result implies the existence of a specific isomerase in the platypus that converts an L-amino acid residue in the protein to the D-configuration. Despite extensive research in the last 150 years, the regional tectonic reconstruction of the Western Alps has remained controversial. The curved orogenic belt consists of several ribbon-like continental terranes (Sesia/Austroalpine, Internal Crystalline Massifs, Brianconnais), which are separated by two or more ophiolitic sutures (Piemonte, Valais, Antrona?, Lanzo/ Canavese?). High-pressure (HP) metamorphism of each terrane occurred during distinct orogenic episodes: at similar to65 Ma in the Sesia/Austroalpine, at similar to45 Ma in the Piemonte zone and at similar to35 Ma in the Internal Crystalline Massifs. It is suggested that these events reflect individual accretionary episodes, which together with kinematic indicators and the speed and direction of plate motions, provide constraints for the discussed reconstruction model. The model involves a prolonged orogenic history that took place during relative convergence of Europe and Adria (here considered as a promontory of the African plate). The first accretionary event involved the Sesia/Austroalpine terrane. Final closure of the Piemonte Ocean occurred during the Eocene (similar to45 Ma) and involved ultra-high-pressure (UHP) metamorphism of the Piemonte oceanic crust. Incorporation of the Brianconnais terrane in the accretionary wedge occurred thereafter, possibly during or after subduction of the Valais Ocean in the late Eocene (45-35 Ma). This subduction was terminated at ca. 35 Ma, when the Internal Crystalline Massifs (i.e. the assumed internal parts of the Brianconnais terrane) were buried into great depths and underwent HP and UHP metamorphism. Lentil is a self-pollinating diploid (2n = 14 chromosomes) annual cool season legume crop that is produced throughout the world and is highly valued as a high protein food. Several abiotic stresses are important to lentil yields world wide and include drought, heat, salt susceptibility and iron deficiency. The biotic stresses are numerous and include: susceptibility to Ascochyta blight, caused by Ascochyta lentis; Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum truncatum; Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum; Sclerotinia white mold, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum; rust, caused by Uromyces fabae; and numerous aphid transmitted viruses. Lentil is also highly susceptible to several species of Orabanche prevalent in the Mediterranean region, for which there does not appear to be much resistance in the germplasm. Plant breeders and geneticists have addressed these stresses by identifying resistant/tolerant germplasm, determining the genetics involved and the genetic map positions of the resistant genes. To this end progress has been made in mapping the lentil genome and several genetic maps are available that eventually will lead to the development of a consensus map for lentil. Marker density has been limited in the published genetic maps and there is a distinct lack of co-dominant markers that would facilitate comparisons of the available genetic maps and efficient identification of markers closely linked to genes of interest. Molecular breeding of lentil for disease resistance genes using marker assisted selection, particularly for resistance to Ascochyta blight and Anthracnose, is underway in Australia and Canada and promising results have been obtained. Comparative genomics and synteny analyses with closely related legumes promises to further advance the knowledge of the lentil genome and provide lentil breeders with additional genes and selectable markers for use in marker assisted selection. Genomic tools such as macro and micro arrays, reverse genetics and genetic transformation are emerging technologies that may eventually be available for use in lentil crop improvement.

The effect of Ni and Al additions on grain boundary silica in mechanically alloyed and hot isostatically pressed (HTPed) MoSi2 was investigated. Mechanical alloying Mo and Si in the absence of Al produced finely dispersed silica within a fine grained structure. Mechanically alloyed and HIPed Mo and Si with Ni and Al partially transformed the silica to crystalline oxide phases, including Al2O3. An improvement in high temperature properties is not expected due to the retention of a grain boundary silica film. Rapid grain growth resulted during HIPing, possibly due to the formation of a Ni/Fe/Al liquid phase.

A line of FVB (H-2(q)) mice transgenic for the E6/E7 open reading frames of Human Papillomavirus type 16 driven from the alpha-A crystallin promoter expresses E7 mRNA in lens and skin epithelium. E7 protein is detectable in adult skin, coinciding with the development or inflammatory skin disease, which progresses to papillomata and squamous carcinomata in some mice. By examining the outcome of parenteral immunization with E7 protein, we sought to determine whether endogenous expression of E7 in skin had induced a preexisting immune outcome, i.e., specific immunity or tolerance, or whether the mice remain naive (''ignorant'') to E7. Our data show that the antibody response to defined E7 B-epitopes, the proliferative response to Th epitopes, and the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to whole E7 did not differ between groups or young and old E6/E7 transgenic mice (likely having different degrees of lifetime exposure to E7 protein) or between E6/E7-transgenic and nontransgenic parental strain control mice. Although an E7-specific CTL response could not be induced in the H-2(q) background of these mice, incorporation of a D-b allele into the genome allowed comparison of D-b-restricted CTL responses in E6/E7 transgenic and nontransgenic mice. Experiments indicated that the E7-immunization-induced CTL response did not differ significantly between E6/E7 transgenic and nontransgenic mice. We interpret these results to indicate that in spite of expression of E7 protein in adult skin, E6/E7 transgenic mice remain immunologically naive (ignorant) of E7 epitopes presented by immunization. Homocystinuria, due to a deficiency of the enzyme cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS), is an inborn error of sulphur-amino acid metabolism, This is an autosomal recessive disease which results in hyperhomocysteinaemia and a wide range of clinical features, including optic lens dislocation, mental retardation, skeletal abnormalities and premature thrombotic events, We report the identification of 5 missense mutations in the protein-coding region of the CBS gene from 3 patients with pyridoxine-nonresponsive homocystinuria. Reverse-transcription PCR was used to amplify CBS cDNA from each patient and the coding region was analysed by direct sequencing, The mutations detected included 3 novel (1058C --> T, 992C --> A and 1316G --> A) and 2 previously identified (430G --> A and 833C --> T) base alterations in the CBS cDNA, Each of these mutations predicts a single amino acid substitution in the CBS polypeptide, Appropriate cassettes of patient CBS cDNA, containing each of the above defined mutations, were used to replace the corresponding cassettes of normal CBS cDNA sequence within the bacterial expression vector pT7-7. These recombinant mutant and normal CBS constructs were expressed in Escherichia coli cells and the catalytic activities of the mutant proteins were compared with normal. All of the mutant proteins exhibited decreased catalytic activity in vitro, which confirmed the association between the individual mutation and CBS dysfunction in each patient.

Objective: As part of a randomised double-blind study of a new atypical antipsychotic we sought to determine both the levels of visual acuity and the occurrence of toxic side-effects in a group of patients treated for many years on a variety of antipsychotics. Method: Twenty-three inpatients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia from two separate hospital locations who met the criteria for the double-blind trial were examined for ocular abnormalities at both baseline and at trial completion. Results: At baseline a high prevalence of abnormalities was identified: 19 patients (82.6%) were found to have one or more ocular abnormalities, including lens opacities/cataracts and corneal pigmentation; three patients, with delusions related to the sun, were noted to have solar burns; a high proportion (almost 70%) of patients had untreated visual acuity problems. No further changes were observed at the follow-up examinations. Conclusions: The possible causes of ocular disturbance in schizophrenia and the reasons for the relatively high ocular morbidity in this group are thought to result from both illness-related factors and the effects of antipsychotic medication. Causality is confounded by a number of issues such as the high prevalence of smoking, poor general health and the variety of antipsychotic medications used in the treatment of psychosis as well as substance abuse. The clinical implications are considered in this paper in relation to the move towards community-based psychiatric services.

The world's deep oceans are home to a number of teleosts with asymmetrical or tubular eyes. These immobile eyes possess large spherical lenses and subtend a large binocular visual field directed either dorsally or rostrally. Derived from a lateral non-tubular eye, the tubular eye is comprised of a thick main retina, subserving the rostrally or dorsally directed binocular visual field, and a thin accessory retina subserving, the lateral, monocular visual field. The main retina is thought to receive a focussed image, while the accessory retina is too close to the lens for a focussed image to be received. Several species also possess retinal diverticula, which are small evaginations of differentiated retina located in the rostrolateral wall of the eye and thought to increase the visual field. In order to investigate the spatial resolving power of these retinae (main, accessory and diverticulum), the distribution of cells within the ganglion cell layer was analysed from retinal wholemounts and sectioned material in ten species representing four genera. In all species, the main retina possesses a marked increase in cell density towards a specialised retinal region (area centralis), with a centro-peripheral gradient range between 7.1 and 60:1 and a peak density range of between 30 and 55 x 10(3) cells per mm(2). The accessory retinae and the transitional zone between the main and accessory retinae possess relatively low cell densities (between 1 and 10 x 10(3) cells per mm(2)) and lack an area centralis. Retinal diverticula examined in four species possess mean ganglion cell densities of between 7.2 and 109.4 x 10(3) cells per mm(2). Analyses of soma areas show that the ganglion cell layer of most species possesses cells with areas in a range of 8.0 to 15.4 mu m(2) in the main retina and between 15.1 and 17.4 mu m(2) in the accessory retina. The peak spatial resolving power of the main retina of the ten species varies from 4.1 to 9.1 cycles per degree. The positions of the retinal areae centrales relative to each species' binocular visual field are discussed in relation to what is known of feeding behaviour of these fishes in the deep-sea.

Guadalupian reefs occur locally in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and Western Zhejiang, South China. Two types of Guadalupian reefs can be recognized, one is developed in carbonate platforms, e.g. those in the juncture areas of Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou; the other occurs in a littoral clastic shelf. The Lengwu reef in Western Zhejiang is a representative of the latter type, which is a major topic of this paper. Lengwu algae-sponge reef, more than one hundred meters in thickness, are composed mainly of sponges, hydrozoans, algae, bryozoans, microbes and lime mud. Reef limestones sit on the mudstone interbedded with fine sandstone of the proximal prodelta facies and are overlain by coarse clasts of the delta front sediments. Lengwu reef displays a lens-shaped relief, dipping and thinning from the reef core, which is remarkably different from the surrounding sediments, showing a protruding relief. Sponges and microbe/algae form bafflestone, bindstone and framestone of the reef core facies. Fore-reef facies is characterized by lithoclastic rudstone and bioclastic packstone. Reef limestone sequence is composed of three cycles and controlled by sea level changes and sediment influx. Such reef is unique among the Guadalupian reefs in South China, but seems similar in some aspects to lwaizaki reef limestones of south Kitakami in Japan. Algae and microbes growing around sponges to form rigid structure in Lengwu reef are a typical feature, which is distinctly different to Guadalupian reefs in a stable platform facies of Guizhou, Yunnan and Guangxi, South China.

The spectral sensitivities of avian retinal photoreceptors are examined with respect to microspectrophotometric measurements of single cells, spectrophotometric measurements of extracted or in vitro regenerated visual pigments, and molecular genetic analyses of visual pigment opsin protein sequences. Bird species from diverse orders are compared in relation to their evolution, their habitats and the multiplicity of visual tasks they must perform. Birds have five different types of visual pigment and seven different types of photo receptor-rods, double (uneven twin) cones and four types of single cone. The spectral locations of the wavelengths of maximum absorbance (lambda (max)) of the different visual pigments, and the spectral transmittance characteristics of the intraocular spectral filters (cone oil droplets) that also determine photoreceptor spectral sensitivity, vary according to both habitat and phylogenetic relatedness. The primary influence on avian retinal design appears to be the range of wavelengths available for vision, regardless of whether that range is determined by the spectral distribution of the natural illumination or the spectral transmittance of the ocular media (cornea, aqueous humour, lens, vitreous humour). Nevertheless, other variations in spectral sensitivity exist that reflect the variability and complexity of avian visual ecology. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Many coral reef fish are beautifully coloured and the reflectance spectra of their colour patterns may include UVa wavelengths (315-400 nm) that are largely invisible to the human eye (Losey, G. S., Cronin, T. W., Goldsmith, T. H., David, H., Marshall, N. J., & McFarland, W.N, (1999). The uv visual world of fishes: a review. Journal of Fish Biology, 54, 921-943; Marshall, N. J. & Oberwinkler, J. (1999). The colourful world of the mantis shrimp. Nature, 401, 873-874). Before the possible functional significance of UV patterns can be investigated, it is of course essential to establish whether coral reef fishes can see ultraviolet light. As a means of tackling this question, in this study the transmittance of the ocular media of 211 coral reef fish species was measured. It was found that the ocular media of 50.2% of the examined species strongly absorb light of wavelengths below 400 nm, which makes the perception of UV in these fish very unlikely. The remaining 49.8% of the species studied possess ocular media that do transmit UV light, making the perception of UV possible. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
