Detailed microstructural evidence for the mechanism of the alpha-beta phase transformation in ytterbium SiAlON ceramics is presented. Grains, which show partial transformation, have been examined using transmission electron microscopy. We suggest that the transformation proceeds as a discernable reaction front and the accompanying lattice mismatch is accommodated be a series of complex dislocations. The stabilizing cation is ejected from the transformed alpha- phase and diffuse along the dislocation to accumulate as isolated pockets in a way similar to that observed in metal systems and termed pipe diffusion. High-resolution electron microscopy reveals the details of each of these features.

To determine the potential for rootstocks to improve avocado quality, 'Hass' fruit from trees on seedling 'Velvick' (SV), clonal 'Velvick' (CV) or clonal 'Duke 7' (CD) rootstocks were harvested in 1999 and 2000, ripened at 20 C immediately after harvest (non-stored) or stored at 5 C for four weeks (stored), and then fruit quality and mineral concentrations determined. In 2000, non-stored CV fruit had lower severity of body rots (5% of flesh volume affected, caused mainly by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) than CD fruit (20%), while body rots severity in stored CV fruit was 20% compared with 38% in stored CD fruit. Stored CV fruit had less severe diffuse discoloration (3% and 9% in 1999 and 2000, respectively) than CD fruit (7% and 20%, respectively). Stored CV fruit also had less severe vascular browning (19%) than CD fruit (33%) in 2000. In both seasons, CV fruit had 15-19% higher flesh calcium concentrations, 17-22% higher flesh boron concentrations, and 14-15% lower flesh nitrogen concentrations than CD fruit. In 2000, CV fruit also had 27% more skin calcium and 14% less skin nitrogen than CD fruit. There were no effects of rootstock on yield, canopy volume, measured length of non-suberized roots, average fruit weight, fruit length: width ratio, skin thickness, dry matter, proportion of the fruit skin purple-black when ripe, or seed mass: fruit weight ratio. These results suggest that there is potential to improve 'Hass' avocado quality through rootstock selection, and that tree and fruit mineral concentrations have a role in this relationship.

Posterior leukoencephalopathy syndromes have been reported with hypertension, and immunosuppressive and chemotherapy agents. Cerebral vasospasm on MR angiography (MRA) has been noted in cases due to eclampsia. The authors report a case of Balint syndrome with irreversible posterior leukoencephalopathy on MRI following intrathecal methotrexate and cytarabine. Hypertension was not present. Diffuse, reversible arterial irregularities consistent with vasospasm were present on MRA during the acute illness.

Low-temperature anneals (1200 degreesC for 40 h) of 8 mol% yttria-stabilised zirconia, prior to the samples being sintered at 1500 degreesC, had the effect of improving the ionic conductivity of the specimens. The presence Of SiO2 in the specimens was shown to be detrimental, however. Irrespective of the SiO2 content, this type of heat treatment also leads to improvements in conductivity. Extensive microstructural analysis provided indication of the mechanism of this phenomenon. This included selective formation of zircon, relief of sintering strain leading to the formation of coherent grain boundaries and segregation effects. The radio frequency (RF) plasma-modified surfaces of kaolinite were investigated by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) and deuteration techniques to determine the nature of RF plasma-induced surface functional groups, the altered sites in the lattice, and interaction mechanism between RF plasma and the surface of the kaolinite. It has been concluded that the RF plasma-induced infrared (IR) vibration absorption bands at 2805, 3010, and 3100 cm(-1) are attributable to the stretching vibration of hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups, and the band at 1407 cm(-1) is attributable to the bending vibration of (HO-)Al-O or (HO-)Si-O groupings with hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups. Structural alteration occurred on both the surface and subsurface region of the kaolinite during RF plasma treatment. Further structural alteration or adjustment was also observed on well-modified and well-deuterated kaolinite. There are two types of OD bands visible in the DRIFT spectra of this kaolinite, one type which decreased rapidly as a function of time in moist air, and the other which remained unchanged during the measurement. Furthermore, the appearance of broad IR bands at 3500-3100 cm(-1) as a result of deuteration is evidence of structural disturbance by RF plasma treatment lattice deuteration. An RF plasma-induced hydrogen bonding model on the surface of the kaolinite is proposed.

We present a theory for the transport of molecules adsorbed in slit and cylindrical nanopores at low density, considering the axial momentum gain of molecules oscillating between diffuse wall reflections. Good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations is obtained over a wide range of pore sizes, including the regime of single-file diffusion where fluid-fluid interactions are shown to have a negligible effect on the collective transport coefficient. We show that dispersive fluid-wall interactions considerably attenuate transport compared to classical hard sphere theory.
