The gamma-radiolysis of poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoromethyl vinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE) was investigated using chemical and mechanical analyses. The polymer was found to form an insoluble network with a dose of gelation of 15.8 kGy. Tensile and glass transition temperature measurements indicated the predominance of crosslinking, with optimal elastomeric properties reached in the dose range of 120 to 200 kGy. Photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy CPAS) showed the formation of new carboxylic acid end groups on irradiation. These new end groups were shown to decrease the thermal oxidative stability of the crosslinked network as determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the polymer at 77 K indicated the presence of radical precursors. A G-value of 1.1 was determined for radical production at 77 K. Comparison of radical concentrations for a copolymer with a different mole ratio of PMVE, indicated that the PMVE units contribute to scission reactions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Composite adsorbents of carbon and alumina intercalated montmorillonite were prepared and characterized by adsorption of N-2 and O-2 at various temperatures. The effects of pyrolysis, temperature, heating rate, subsequent degassing, and doping of cations and anions were investigated. The adsorption capacities of the composite adsorbents developed at higher temperatures (0 and -79 degrees C) are found to be larger than those of normal alumina pillared clays. The experimental results showed that the framework of these adsorbents is made of alumina particles and clay sheets while the pyrolyzed carbon distributes in the space of interlayers and interpillars. The pores between the carbon particles, clay sheets, and alumina pillars are very narrow with very strong adsorption forces, leading to enhanced adsorption capacities at 0 and -79 degrees C. The composite adsorbents exhibit features similar to those of carbonaceous adsorbents. Their pore structures, adsorption capacities, and selectivities to oxygen can be tailored by a controlled degassing procedure. Meanwhile, ions can be doped into the adsorbents to modify their adsorption properties, as usually observed for oxide adsorbents like zeolite and pillared clays. Such flexibility in pore structure tailoring is a potential advantage of the composite adsorbents developed for their adsorption and separation applications. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Zinc fingers (ZnFs) are generally regarded as DNA-binding motifs. However, a number of recent reports have implicated particular ZnFs in the mediation of protein-protein interactions. The N-terminal ZnF of GATA-1 (NF) is one such finger, having been shown to interact with a number of other proteins, including the recently discovered transcriptional co-factor FOG. Here we solve the three-dimensional structure of the NF in solution using multidimensional H-1/N-15 NMR spectroscopy, and we use H-1/N-15 spin relation measurements to investigate its backbone dynamics. The structure consists of two distorted beta-hairpins and a single alpha-helix, and is similar to that of the C-terminal ZnF of chicken GATA-1. Comparisons of the NF structure with those of other C-4-type zinc binding motifs, including hormone receptor and LIM domains, also reveal substantial structural homology. Finally, we use the structure to map the spatial locations of NF residues shown by mutagenesis to be essential for FOG binding, and demonstrate that these residues all lie on a single face of the NE Notably, this face is well removed from the putative DNA-binding face of the NE an observation which is suggestive of simultaneous roles for the NF; that is, stabilisation of GATA-1 DNA complexes and recruitment of FOG to GATA-1-controlled promoter regions.

Incorporation of 1 wt % of triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) significantly enhanced the radiation crosslinking of the perfluoroelastomer, poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoromethylvinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE). The dose for gelation was lowered by 70% with the presence of TAIC. The additive also improved the tensile properties of TFE/ PMVE both before and after crosslinking by irradiation. Higher radical yields were obtained with the presence of TAIC at 77 K, indicating the crosslinking promoter was acting as a radical trap. ESR studies showed that radiolysis of TAIC and subsequent photobleaching cleaved an allyl branch from the ring structure. Upon thermal annealing, an allyl radical on the TAIC molecule was observed. The chemical potential of adsorbed film inside cylindrical mesopores is dependent on the attractive interactions between the adsorbed molecules and adsorbent, the curvature of gas/adsorbed phase interface, and surface tension. A state equation of the adsorbed film is proposed to take into account the above factors. Nitrogen adsorption on model adsorbents, MCM-41, which exhibit uniform cylindrical channels, are used to verify the theoretical analysis. The proposed theory is capable of describing the important features of adsorption processes in cylindrical mesopores. According to this theory, at a given relative pressure, the smaller the pore radius is, the thicker the adsorbed film will be. The thickening of adsorbed films in the pores as the vapor pressure increases inevitably causes an increase in the interface curvature, which consequently leads to capillary condensation. Besides, this study confirmed that the interface tension depends substantially on the interface curvature in small mesopores. A quantitative relationship between the condensation pressure and the pore radius can be derived from the state equation and used to predict the pore radius from a condensation pressure, or vice versa.

A number of carbonaceous adsorbents were prepared by carbonisation at 600 degrees C following acidic oxidation under various conditions. Effects of the chemical nature of the precursor, such as the ratio of aromatic to aliphatic carbons and oxygen content, on the chemical and structural characteristics of the resultant chars were investigated using C-13 NMR and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The C-13 NMR spectral parameters of the coal samples show that as the severity of oxidation conditions increased, the ratio of aromatic to aliphatic carbons increased. Furthermore, it was also found that the amount of disorganised carbon affects both the pore structure and the adsorption properties of carbonaceous adsorbents. It is demonstrated that higher amount of the disorganised carbon indicates smaller micropore size. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Catalytic conversion of N2O to N-2 With potassium catalysts supported on activated carbon (K/AC) was investigated. Potassium proves to be much more active and stable than either copper or cobalt because potassium possesses strong abilities both for N2O chemisorption and oxygen transfer. Potassium redispersion is found to play a critical role in influencing the catalyst stability. A detailed study of the reaction mechanism was conducted based upon three different catalyst loadings. It was found that during temperature-programmed reaction (TPR), the negative oxygen balance at low temperatures (< 50 degrees C) is due to the oxidation of the external surface of potassium oxide particles, while the bulk oxidation accounts for the oxygen accumulation at higher temperatures (below ca. 270 degrees C). N2O is beneficial for the removal of carbon-oxygen complexes because of the formation of CO2 instead of CO and because of its role in making the chemisorption of produced CO2 on potassium oxide particles less stable. A conceptual three-zone model was proposed to clarify the reaction mechanism over K/AC catalysts. CO2 chemisorption at 250 degrees C proves to be an effective measurement of potassium dispersion. Fertilisation of eggs of free-spawning marine invertebrates depends on factors affecting sperm concentration in the field and also on gamete characteristics such as egg size. In the free-spawning intertidal ascidian Pyura stolonifera mean egg size increased with maternal size in 2 separate populations. The largest ascidian produced eggs that were, on average, 50% greater in volume than the eggs produced by the smallest individual studied. There was no evidence to suggest that egg density varied with adult size and egg dry organic weight increased with maternal size. The fertilisation kinetics of this species were strongly affected by the variation in egg size, with the eggs of large individuals requiring much less concentrated sperm to achieve maximal levels of fertilisation success than the eggs of small individuals. We suggest that variation in egg size between individuals of different sizes and ages may be an important factor in determining fertilisation success for ascidians of this species.

A new isotherm is proposed here for adsorption of condensable vapors and gases on nonporous materials having type II isotherms according to the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (BDDH) classification. The isotherm combines the recent molecular-continuum model in the multilayer region, with other widely used models for sub-monolayer coverage, some of which satisfy the requirement of a Henry's law asymptote. The model is successfully tested using isotherm data for nitrogen adsorption on nonporous silica, carbon and alumina, as well as benzene and hexane adsorption on nonporous carbon. Based on the data fits, out of several different alternative choices of model for the monolayer region, the Freundlich and the Unilan models are found to be the most successful when combined with the multilayer model to predict the whole isotherm. The hybrid model is consequently applicable over a wide pressure range. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this article, a new hybrid model for estimating the pore size distribution of micro- and mesoporous materials is developed, and tested with the adsorption data of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon on ordered mesoporous materials reported in the literature. For the micropore region, the model uses the Dubinin-Rudushkevich (DR) isotherm with the Chen-Yang modification. A recent isotherm model of the authors for nonporous materials, which uses a continuum-mechanical model for the multilayer region and the Unilan model for the submonolayer region, has been extended for adsorption in mesopores. The experimental data is inverted using regularization to obtain the pore size distribution. The present model was found to be successful in predicting the pore size distribution of pure as well as binary physical mixtures of MCM-41 synthesized with different templates, with results in agreement with those from the XRD method and nonlocal density functional theory. It was found that various other recent methods, as well as the classical Broekhoff and de Beer method, underpredict the pore diameter of MCM-41. The present model has been successfully applied to MCM-48, SBA's, CMK, KIT, HMS, FSM, MTS, mesoporous fly ash, and a large number of other regular mesoporous materials.

The ability of Huntington's disease patients to co-ordinate their two hands with and without external cueing was investigated. Twelve Huntington's disease patients and sex- and age-matched controls performed a bimanual cranking task at two speeds (0.5 Hz, 1.5 Hz) and phase relationships (in-phase, anti-phase), with and without an external metronome cue. Data were sampled at 200 Hz, and raw displacement data for each hand, mean and standard deviation measures of the relative positions of the two hands and their velocities were then calculated. All participants could perform the in-phase movement, at both speeds; however, the Huntington's disease patients were more variable and less accurate than the control participants, particularly at the fast speed. While controls could perform the anti-phase movement, in which rotation of the cranks differed by 180 degrees at both speeds, Huntington's disease patients were unable to do so at either speed, reverting to the in-phase movement at the slow speed. An external metronome cue did not improve the performance of the Huntington's disease patients, which differentiated this group from patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. The Huntington's disease patients' inability to perform the anti-phase movement may be due to damage to the basal ganglia and its output regions.

First of all, we would like to clarify that the passive to active transition was determined not by using Solgasmix [1], but by combining thermodynamic equilibrium and mass balance for the oxidation of SiC under pure CO2 and pure CO. The model used in our paper [2]was an extension ofWagner’s model [3], in a similar way as Balat et al. [4] did for the oxidation of SiC in oxygen.

This article reports on the liquid phase adsorption of flavour esters onto granular activated carbon. Ethyl propionate, ethyl butyrate, and ethyl isovalerate were used as adsorbates, and Filtrasorb 400 activated carbon was chosen as the adsorbent. Sips, Toth, Unilan, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm equations which are generally used for heterogeneous adsorbents were used to fit the data. Although satisfactory in fitting the data, inconsistency in parameter values indicated these models to be inadequate. On the other hand the Dubinin-Radushkevich model gave more consistent and meaningful parameter values and adsorption capacities. By employing the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation, the limiting volume of the adsorbed space, which equals the accessible micropore volume, was determined, and found to correlate with the value from carbon dioxide adsorption.

In the present work, various theories predicting the critical diameter for the absence of capillary condensation and hysteresis are applied to experimental adsorption isotherms of vapors on regular mesoporous materials. Among the various theories studied, the tensile strength approximation proposed by the authors was found to be the most successful. Reversibility of nitrogen adsorption at 77.4 K was studied on pure MCM-41 of various pore sizes, as well as mixtures of pure MCM-41 samples in a 1:1 ratio. The results of PSD and hysteresis on MCM-41 mixtures are close to that expected from studies of the pure materials. The estimates of hysteresis critical temperature and diameter of MCM-41, HMS, FSM and KIT materials are also provided.
