Catalytic conversion of N2O to N-2 With potassium catalysts supported on activated carbon (K/AC) was investigated. Potassium proves to be much more active and stable than either copper or cobalt because potassium possesses strong abilities both for N2O chemisorption and oxygen transfer. Potassium redispersion is found to play a critical role in influencing the catalyst stability. A detailed study of the reaction mechanism was conducted based upon three different catalyst loadings. It was found that during temperature-programmed reaction (TPR), the negative oxygen balance at low temperatures (< 50 degrees C) is due to the oxidation of the external surface of potassium oxide particles, while the bulk oxidation accounts for the oxygen accumulation at higher temperatures (below ca. 270 degrees C). N2O is beneficial for the removal of carbon-oxygen complexes because of the formation of CO2 instead of CO and because of its role in making the chemisorption of produced CO2 on potassium oxide particles less stable. A conceptual three-zone model was proposed to clarify the reaction mechanism over K/AC catalysts. CO2 chemisorption at 250 degrees C proves to be an effective measurement of potassium dispersion. The solution treatment stage of the T6 heat-treatment of Al-7%Si-Mg foundry alloys influences microstructural features such as Mg2Si dissolution, and eutectic silicon spheroidisation and coarsening. Microstructural and microanalytical studies have been conducted across a range of Sr-modified Al-7%Si alloys, with an Fe content of 0.12% and Mg contents ranging from 0.3-0.7wt%. Qualitative and quantitative metallography have shown that, in addition to the above changes, solution treatment also results in changes to the relative proportions of iron-containing intermetallic particles and that these changes are composition-dependent. While solution treatment causes a substantial transformation of pi phase to beta phase in low Mg alloys (0.3-0.4%), this change is not readily apparent at higher Mg levels (0.6-0.7%). The pi to beta transformation is accompanied by a release of Mg into the aluminum matrix over and above that which arises from the rapid dissolution of Mg2Si. Since the level of matrix Mg retained after quenching controls an alloy's subsequent precipitation hardening response, a proper understanding of this phase transformation is crucial if tensile properties are to be maximised.

Hedley er al. (1982) developed what has become the most widely used land modified), phosphorus (P) fractionation technique. It consists of sequential extraction of increasingly less phytoavailable P pools. Extracts are centrifuged at up to 25000 g (RCF) and filtered to 0.45 mu m to ensure that soil is not lost between extractions. In attempting to transfer this method to laboratories with limited facilities, it was considered that access to high-speed centrifuges, and the cost of frequent filtration may prevent adoption of this P fractionation technique. The modified method presented here was developed to simplify methodology, reduce cost, and therefore increase accessibility of P fractionation technology. It provides quantitative recovery of soil between extractions, using low speed centrifugation without filtration. This is achieved by increasing the ionic strength of dilute extracts, through the addition of NaCl, to flocculate clay particles. Addition of NaCl does not change the amount of P extracted. Flocculation with low speed centrifugation produced extracts comparable with those having undergone filtration (0.025 mu m). A malachite green colorimetric method was adopted for inorganic P determination, as this simple manual method provides high sensitivity with negligible interference from other anions. This approach can also be used for total P following digestion, alternatively non-discriminatory methods, such as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, may be employed.

The high strength to weight ratio of magnesium alloys makes them extremely attractive for applications in transport or aerospace technology. However, their corrosion behavior is a major issue and one reason why they are still not as popular as aluminum alloys. This papers reviews the corrosion mechanisms of magnesium and provides the basis for the design of new alloys with improved corrosion properties.

The dendrite coherency point of Al-Si-Cu alloys was determined by thermal analysis and rheological measurement methods by performing parallel measurements at two cooling rates for aluminum alloys across a wide range of silicon and copper contents. Contrary to previous findings, the two methods yield significantly different values for the fraction solid at the dendrite coherency point. This disparity is greatest for alloys of low solute concentration. The results from this study also contradict previously reported tl ends in the effect of cooling rate on the dendritic coherency point. Consideration of the results shows that thermal analysis is not a valid technique for the measurement of coherency. Analysis of the results from rheological testing indicates that silicon concentration has a dominant effect on grain size and dendritic morphology, independent of cooling rate and copper content, and thus is the factor that determines the fraction solid at dendrite coherency for Al-Si-Cu alloys.

The effects of different levels of strontium on nucleation and growth of the eutectic in a commercial hypoeutectic Al-Si foundry alloy have been investigated by optical microscopy and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) mapping by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructural evolution of each specimen during solidification was studied by a quenching technique at different temperatures and Sr contents. By comparing the orientation of the aluminum in the eutectic to that of the surrounding primary aluminum dendrites by EBSD, the eutectic formation mechanism could be determined. The results of these studies show that the eutectic nucleation mode, and subsequent growth mode, is strongly dependent on Sr level. Three distinctly different eutectic growth modes were found, in isolation or sometimes together, but different for each Sr content. At very low Sr contents, the eutectic nucleated and grew from the primary phase. Increasing the Sr level to between 70 and 110 ppm resulted in nucleation of independent eutectic grains with no relation to the primary dendrites. At a Sr level of 500 ppm, the eutectic again nucleated on and grew from the primary phase while a well-modified eutectic structure was still present. A slight dependency of eutectic growth radially from the mold wall opposite the thermal gradient was observed in all specimens in the early stages of eutectic solidification.

Little is known about the responses of Australian plants to excess metal, including Mn. It is important to remedy this lack of information so that knowledgeable decisions can be made about managing Mn contaminated sites where inhabited by Australian vegetation. Acacia holosericea, Melaleuca leucadendra, Eucalyptus crebra and Eucalyptus camaldulensis were grown in dilute solution culture for 10 weeks. The seedlings ( 42 days old) were exposed to six Mn treatments viz., 1, 8, 32, 128, 512 and 2048 muM. The order of tolerance to toxic concentrations of Mn was A. holosericea congruent to = E. crebra < M. leucadendra < E. camaldulensis, the critical external concentrations being approximately 5.1, 5.0, 21 and 330 muM, respectively. The critical tissue Mn concentrations for the youngest fully expanded leaf and total shoots were, respectively, 265 and 215 mug g(-1) DM for A. holosericea, 445 and 495 mug g(-1) DM for M. leucadendra, 495 and 710 mug g(-1) DM for E. crebra and 7230 and 6510 mug g(-1) DM for E. camaldulensis. The high tolerance of E. camaldulensis ( as opposed to the sensitivity of E. crebra) to excess Mn raises concern about fauna feeding on the plant and is consistent with hypotheses suggesting the Eucalyptus subgenus Symphomyrtus is particularly tolerant of stress, including excess Mn. The results from this paper provide the first comprehensive combination of growth responses, critical external concentrations, critical tissue concentrations and plant toxicity symptoms for three important Australian genera, viz., Eucalyptus, Acacia and Melaleuca, for use in the management of Mn toxic sites.

The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior and pre-exposure embrittlement of AZ31 magnesium alloy have been studied by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) tests in this paper. It is showed that AZ31 sheet material is susceptible to SCC in distilled water, ASTM D1.387 solution, 0.01 M NaCl and 0.1 M NaCl solution. The AZ31 magnesium alloy also becomes embrittled if pre-exposed to 0.01 M NaCl solution prior to tensile testing. The degree of embrittlement increased with increasing the pre-exposure time, It is proposed that both the pre-exposure embrittlement and SCC were due to hydrogen which reduces the cohesive strength. i,e,. hydrogen embrittlement, (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Recent increasing applications for cast Al-Si alloys are particularly driven by the need for lightweighting components in the automotive sector. To improve mechanical properties, elements such as strontium, sodium and antimony can be added to modify the eutectic silicon from coarse and plate-like to fine and fibrous morphology. It is only recently being noticed that the morphological transformation resulting from eutectic modification is also accompanied by other, equally significant, but often unexpected changes. These changes can include a 10-fold increase in the eutectic grain size, redistribution of low-melting point phases and porosity as well as surface finish, consequently leading to variations in casting quality. This paper shows the state-of-the-art in understanding the mechanism of eutectic nucleation and growth in Al-Si alloys, inspecting samples, both quenched and uninterrupted, on the macro, micro and nano-scale. It shows that significant variations in eutectic nucleation and growth dynamics occur in AI-Si alloys as a function of the type and amount of modifier elements added. The key role of AIP particles in nucleating silicon is demonstrated. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanocomposite materials have received considerable attention in recent years due to their novel properties. Grain boundaries are considered to play an important role in nanostructured materials. This work focuses on the finite element analysis of the effect of grain boundaries on the overall mechanical properties of aluminium/alumina composites. A grain boundary is incorporated into the commonly used unit cell model to investigate its effect on material properties. By combining the unit cell model with an indentation model, coupled with experimental indentation measurements, the ''effective'' plastic property of the grain boundary is estimated. In addition, the strengthening mechanism is also discussed based on the Estrin-Mecking model.

The acceptance-probability-controlled simulated annealing with an adaptive move generation procedure, an optimization technique derived from the simulated annealing algorithm, is presented. The adaptive move generation procedure was compared against the random move generation procedure on seven multiminima test functions, as well as on the synthetic data, resembling the optical constants of a metal. In all cases the algorithm proved to have faster convergence and superior escaping from local minima. This algorithm was then applied to fit the model dielectric function to data for platinum and aluminum.

The magnesium (Mg) status of 52 highly weathered, predominantly acidic, surface soils from tropical and subtropical north-eastern Australia was evaluated in a laboratory study. Soils were selected to represent a range of soil types and management histories. Exchangeable Mg concentrations were generally low (median value 0.37 cmol(+)/kg), with deficient levels (<0.3 cmol(+)/kg) being measured in 22 of the soils, highlighting the potential for Mg deficiency as a limitation to plant growth in the region. Furthermore, acid-extractable Mg concentrations, considered a reserve of potentially available Mg, were generally modest (mean and median values, 1.6 and 0.40 cmol(+)/kg, respectively). The total Mg content of the soils studied ranged from 123 to 7894 mg/kg, the majority present in the mineral pool (mean 71%), with smaller proportions in the acid-soluble (mean 11%) and exchangeable (mean 17%) pools, and a negligible amount associated with organic matter (mean 1%). A range of extractant solutions used to displace exchangeable Mg was compared, and found to yield similar results on soils with exchangeable Mg <4 cmol(+)/kg. However, at higher exchangeable Mg concentrations, dilute extractants (0.01 M CaCl2, 0.0125 M BaCl2) displaced less Mg than concentrated extractants (1 M NH4Cl, 1 M NH4OAc, 1 M KCl). The concentrated extractants displaced similar amounts of Mg, thus the choice of extractant is not critical, provided the displacing cation is sufficiently concentrated. Exchangeable Mg was not significantly correlated to organic carbon (P > 0.05), and only 45% of the variation in exchangeable Mg could be explained by a combination of pH(w) and clay content.

A glasshouse trial, in which maize (Zea mays L. cv. Pioneer 3270) was grown in 35 north-eastern Australian soils of low magnesium (Mg) status, was undertaken to study the response to applied Mg. Of the soils studied, 20 were strongly acidic (pH(1:5 soil:water) <5.4), and in these soils the response to Mg was studied in both the presence and absence of lime. Magnesium application significantly (P < 0.05) increased dry matter yield in 10 soils, all of which were strongly acidic. However, significant Mg responses were recorded in 6 soils in the presence of lime, indicating that, in many situations, liming strategies may need to include consideration of Mg nutrition. Critical soil test values for 90% relative yield were 0.21 cmol(+)/kg of exchangeable Mg or 7% Mg saturation, whilst the critical (90% yield) plant tissue Mg concentration (whole shoots) was 0.15%.

This investigation focused on the finite element analyses of elastic and plastic properties of aluminium/alumina composite materials with ultrafine microstructure. The commonly used unit cell model was used to predict the elastic properties. By combining the unit cell model with an indentation model, coupled with experimental indentation measurements, the plastic properties of the composites and the associated strengthening mechanism within the metal matrix material were investigated. The grain size of the matrix material was found to be an important factor influencing the mechanical properties of the composites studied. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

We propose a simulated-annealing-based genetic algorithm for solving model parameter estimation problems. The algorithm incorporates advantages of both genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. Tests on computer-generated synthetic data that closely resemble optical constants of a metal were performed to compare the efficiency of plain genetic algorithms against the simulated-annealing-based genetic algorithms. These tests assess the ability of the algorithms to and the global minimum and the accuracy of values obtained for model parameters. Finally, the algorithm with the best performance is used to fit the model dielectric function to data for platinum and aluminum. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.
